All, the USAF unit I work for is having a "Gun Safety Event" at Dragonman's here in Colorado Springs on Friday, June 1st. (details will be posted as they are available).
This event is more than just a "day at the range" for those with firearms experience but it's a way to reach out to members of the unit, both active duty and contractor, to give them exposure to firearms that the USAF and the rest of their lives hasn't yet provided. In fact, other than a couple of times of qualification, I found out that our unit commander has basically NO EXPERIENCE with firearms.
The plan is for several of us (members of the unit) to bring variouos firearms - both handgun and rifle - and let folks shoot them. We'll be providing them with basic instruction on firearms and range safety but this isn't so much a class as a familiarization. Something to help them have a little fun while getting over their unfounded fears and enhancing their respect of firearms.
We'll be requesting that the members provide their own ammo so that those of us allowing the use of our personal firearms won't be on the hook for it.
Additionally, we will be requesting that attendees bring their own "eyes and ears", but we'll have extra ear plugs and a few extras safety glasses available.
What we need are about 3 firearms EXPERIENCED individuals to come out and help act sort of as RSO's and to provide one-on-one attention to those who may need assistance. Of course, good inter-personal skills will really help, as acting RSO's word will be law.
I will cover Dragonman's range fees and buy targets for anyone wanting to volunteer but I can't cover fuel fees to Colo Spr/Dragonmans (I'm poor).
I also ask that if volunteers have extra hearing protection headsets to please bring it.
Again, more details to follow. PM me if you can help.
