View Full Version : Anyone else wish our hobby wasn't controversial?

I've stumbled through quite a few forums recently on like RC airplanes, machining, photography, et cetera. All of it was for the most part happy-go lucky posting. Compare that to here, or any other gun site, and there's all sorts of worry that guns will be banned, panic buying, et cetera. Imagining us buying guns, ammo, magazines (regardless) of capacity, and ammo, without any worry at all about their future legality seems too far fetched to me.
What do you guys think of this?
I agree. My wife is into knitting an crocheting. If I overpay a bit for an item right now or spend money I wasn't intending to spend its difficult for her to really understand. It's not like she won't be able to buy certain knitting needles in a month or two. Or that finding certain colors of yarn is darn near impossible and people are panic buying it an hoarding it or charging three to four times what it's worth.

I wish more Americans had enough common sense and historical knowledge since it's only controversial amongst the ignorant and self-appointed elites. I can't believe America has fallen this far in only 50 years.

The Marxists control of various governmental agencies, especially the Department of Education, have done a remarkable job of 'dumbing down' the American populace, presenting 'revisionist' history and demonizing firearms and firearms owners. The mass media, being majorly controlled by Marxists, is complicit in this incremental erosion of American ideals and freedom.
What history is taught is school today is extremely edited, opinionated from the Leftist view and far too short and limited to give any kind of real understanding of what the Founders were going thru and fighting for. There is virtually no comprehension of the depth of desperation, threats and sacrifice that the Founders and their families faced.
Americans today think it is the end of the world if they can't text, tweet or update FB every 2 minutes. They have no concept of what our grandparents went through during WWII rationing or the Great Depression.
I remember about halfway thru Clinton's second term, looking through one of my nephews' high school history textbook in Texas. There were 4 pages devoted to Reagan's presidency and 25 pages devoted to Clinton. Reagan oversaw and helped engineer the demise of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War without firing a shot yet most of the 4 pages were devoted to Iran-Contra.
If you look at how our educational system has steadily declined since Carter created the Dept. of Ed, how the U.S. continues to fall behind the rest of the world in math, science, reading, it is obvious that Liberal ideals fail humanity.
Look at NYC's education system where 80% of HS grads that attend college require remedial education in reading, math and science before they are ready for college level courses.
Liberals are the problem.

this is exactly what I say. I have been shooting since I could walk. I have owned guns since birth. my children also have owned guns since they were born. We have been shooting, collecting guns, and hunting all our lives. its not a hobby that you just get in or out of to us.
There's a certain counter-culture appeal to firearms as a hobby. That certainly appeals to me on a minor level. However, I really do wish it wasn't so controversial. In my opinion, there's no need for it. Ignorance of the masses will always outweigh facts and statistics.
I remember when gambling was taboo as well. My parents used to go up to Central City all the time, but tell me not to tell people that's where they were going. Once the World Poker Tour went main stream, gambling is no big deal. Of course, I understand that gambling is not really an equal comparison to gun culture. Anyway, thanks to the gun shows on TV, gun culture was probably right on the cusp of being more acceptable, but this constant social war on guns has set that back for decades.
I also wish I could talk about gun stuff at work. I've been fired for that kind of thing in the past, so I don't do it anymore.

I don't ASSOciate with people who think guns are controversial, Same for motorcycles , tattoos and NFA items (a whole nother mind set) especially among "knowledgeable"[ROFL1] gun owners. They're a world unto them self. You gonna tell me those are legal, They're fake or airsoft right?
Most of my interests could be coined "controversial." Good thing I don't give a crap about what the general hoi polloi thinks about my hobbies...

I've always been kind of surprised by guys like that as well. When I first got into guns, NFA stuff was the FIRST thing I started researching.
I know what you mean brother. It makes me sick. I'm to the point where I'm like: "Okay, enough with the bullshit...let's get this revolution underway so I can get back to my day job." It has the feel of a creeping disease and you can tell it's there but taking it's time with the full effect. Just get it over with all ready. Damn...

Frankly, based on the rich firearms heritage of our country, I see the non-firearms owning types to be the controversial ones. To deny the American heritage of gun ownership for defense, hunting, competition and sport is un-American to me. Gun owners to me are the normal people.
I can't say I don't entirely avoid those that don't enjoy guns but I try to. Along the same lines...I don't trust or associate with people who don't like dogs.
Shit my other hobby is RC Planes and I can't even find any type of enjoyment out of that right now because of all the crap that's going on with my first love, guns have always been my passion and I as well as all of you have seen our hobby demonized to the point that we are all in a scramble to make sure we can still continue to enjoy our hobby in the future.

I agree.
If someone doesn't like guns I'm not going to associate with them much. I feel the same way about dogs. I can understand not wanting to be around dogs because of allergies but if someone doesn't like dogs there is something wrong with them.

The members of the forums do it to themselves. They see danger where there is none, they question everything. There are some paranoid $%^*&^&#$^& on this forum.

It sucks when you can't enjoy your hobby because it's become really expensive to do :(

Yes, it does suck, but ya gotta pay to play.....whatever it is you're doing.
My hobby isn't controversial... It's Constitutional [Flower]
So many great hobbies are expensive. I would collect rare gold coins but... I would collect great works of art but... I would travel extensively around the world (not for work) but... I would own an autogyro but...
Be safe.
The major thing that sticks in my side is good natured people who actually want to know that still spit out MSM soundbites. "You have an assault rifle? Why would you need a machine gun? If you need 30rds you should just call the police and let them handle it"...etcetc then I have to explain the same things over and over and over. Other than that though idgaf
I can remember when it WASN'T controversial, it was mainstream. I learned the fundamentals of rifle shooting in a Police Athletic League class at the local indoor cop range (before ventilation, yuck), and high schools had shooting teams. Everybody had guns, it seems, and most kids' dads were WWII vets. Most adults grew up on sustenance hunting, it was a normal way of life. Sure miss those days.
