Just got new plates and got a$$ raped!!! Was wondering if anyone feels my pain and the most you have ever had to pay???? Don't think I will be buying a new car again. I had to pay around $750 ouch!!!! I think 2.1% is to high.

Filthy 1%er. Who do you think you are spending that much on a car?

We had a guy roll into the dealership in a Veyron once. More then the price of the car we figured he spend 30k plus on plate for the thing.

Yikes! Jeffco didn't even mail my renewal stuff this year, I just went down this morning to get them renewed and it was like $190 or so (with their BS credit card fee of roughly $4.00). Down about $40 from last year, and my car is a 2005. Maybe I won't look into buying a 2013 Charger next year.

The lady did save me like $54 by giving me a credit on my old plates that I traded in. If I didn't use a check it would of cost me $19 for a CC fee which is BS for sure.

Yup, plates are ridiculous. Ritter didn't help the cause by adding more fee's/taxes to plates.

Plates in CO are 10x more expensive than SD. I paid $50 to license a new car in 2011.

Rooskibar03
04-19-2013, 12:05
The best part about Colorado's license plate structure is it automatically defaults to the original taxable value of the car. So if you buy a used car that one point was very expensive what you pay for it today really doesn't matter. I spent 15 minutes getting yelled at the other day by someone who did just this.

Yea ownership tax is great, I won't plate a new car here ever again. I had bought 2 new Toyota FJ's in 08 and spent almost $1,700 plating the damn things.

Shit, that ain't nothing.
2 grand on a 13 year old used dumb truck (plates only, not sales tax)

but the worst one is what they call SMM plates

it's it's used commercially off your own property, it needs plates EVEN IF IT NEVER GOES ON THE ROAD.
incredibly expensive.

skid steer: $700 a year
ag tractor (75hp) $600 a year
etc

unless of course you are just a undocumented person then of course they never bother you.
I was spending 10 grand a year JUST in registration fees for my business. (about 50,000 miles total over the vehicles plus the tractors)

fuck 'em, now they get nothing.

Yeah, our 16 y.o. grandson (we're raising him) just got his first car Sunday. It's a 2000 Dodge Intrepid w/154,000 miles on it, he paid $1500 for it. Original price on this hoopty was $23,672, per the registration. So the Bitch Unit sends me to get it emissioned/insured/titled/tagged since I'm unemployed, she works, and he's in school. The price of insurance got her lit up, the cost of emissions made her ass red too, but when I called her this morning and told her the DMV bill was $212.66, she pissed down both legs. I can still hear her ranting echoing in my brain.....

WTF, she think's it's MY goddamn fault? Or that I should have somehow made them make it cheaper? Next year it'll be $82, but this year I get to enjoy the hate. Fuck. And of course, for $1500, you get a shitbox that needs work, and that's my fault too....Fuck.

Think its bad here? Go check out Oklahoma and the cost of initially tagging a car there. Its worse there, trust me. $18k harley was $755 for the first year. At least it goes down after that. The worst is probably kansas, as they hit you with a property tax every year. You get the sam-ram treatment each year.

The last brand new truck I bought back in Texas cost me $42 for plates. Now, here in Colorado, my almost 20 year old truck costs me over $100. Guess its better than the $450 for my motorcycle. I guarantee you I will not be buying a brand new diesel truck or luxury car anytime soon.

There was a lady in the renewal line in front of me once. Her renewal was $800. I'd hate to see what the plates cost her initially.

LOL, you funny man.

When I purchased my work truck I bought it out of TX. I registered it here in CO and paid 1400 for my tags.

It was used.

If there had been a clerical error and they told me it was 750 I would have danced in the DMV.

Also just got ass raped on my Tahoe that I just bought. It's a 99 and with tags and everything out the door it was $800. Sales Tax was a bitch too though. Need to get more "creative" with the bill of sale I suppose. [mop]

Don't misconstrue it... I wasn't complaining, $190 isn't bad, I'd rather that than whatever extraordinary high cost it would take to register a new or one year old car. [Beer]

Still waiting on my title complete notice for my car. I'm expecting somewhere in the realm of $1K. I just renewed the tags on my 6 year old Motorcycle and that cost me $200.

Every time I think it's bad I ask my buddies in So Cal what they pay. We've got it easy compared to them. I think I pay around $40 a year to register my boat here, I moved to So Cal for one year and the boat was nearly $500!! They charge you a luxury tax on recreational motor vehicles there.

$168 for a 28 year old bike that's worth about a grand, after the $100 penalty because I chose not to plate it for a couple of years. It's a dual sport that rarely if ever sees the street, but I wanted current plates so that I could connect trails with public roads without getting a ticket.

What they do with credit cards is illegal, AND against the credit card contract. I told them so, and turned them in before. They don't care. I wish someone would sue them over it.

I had friends that lived both here and So Cal and they said it was way cheaper in So Cal.

It's never been illegal and you don't know for a fact that it's against 'their' agreement. It has always been against my agreements in the past but there was just a class action lawsuit that was settled. You can now charge a higher price for the use of a CC.

I don't know about boats, but Kali is actually cheaper than Kolorado for plates on cars and vehicles. That's just bad.

I swear I've read the Colorado law that was passed that states that this is illegal. Of course I don't have it bookmarked or anything...

This is my understanding also .. by colorado law you may give a cash DISCOUNT but may NOT have a CC surcharge. so it's all in the way you write the paperwork .. you write it with the CC charge added then offer the cash discount. ( cash/check same diff)

Colorado prohibits merchants from imposing a surcharge on credit transactions. “A surcharge is any additional amount imposed at the time of the sales or lease transaction by the merchant, seller, or lessor that increases the charge to the buyer or lessee for the privilege of using a credit or charge card.” C.R.S. 5-2-212(1) (http://www.michie.com/colorado/lpExt.dll?f=templates&eMail=Y&fn=main-h.htm&cp=cocode/2/89e5/89fb/8b56/8b93/8c56)

What really ticks me off is we have the worse roads in the country. While Colorado charges exorbitant registration fess they do nothing to fix the shit hole roads we drive on. I have driven through most of the states and its always smooth driving or at least you see actual road repairs being performed. But not here...

The fee for license plates is out of control now. A little over a year ago I bought a new 2011 Kia Optima for around $32k. I had a 2007 A4 that I had JUST renewed the tags on to the tune of almost $300. I figured I would get the majority of that back since I had only done this three weeks prior (plus the month or so to get title work to the DMV to be able to pay for new plates). This wasn't the case. I got a whopping $110 back for my $300 registration I had paid for about a month prior. On top of that the plates for the new car were over $800! Needless to say, I won't be buying a new car for quite some time. Sorry all those who rely on the car industry. I'm sure that helps the economy. /sarcasm

How problematic would it be to register a car out of state?

It's pretty simple but to say it's frowned upon is an understatement. When I moved here in the 90's I kept my motorcycle registered at my mom's house in Nebraska. This meant I had Nebraska plates on my bike but it also meant that I paid about $50/mo for insurance where the same thing here would have been over $300/mo. Of course Colorado realized how much revenue they were losing to this tactic over a decade ago and they now have a law that if you move here or live here and don't register your vehicle here you can get a citation that costs $1,000. So, you can due it but it's pretty risky now. Who knows, that fine may have even gone up by now.

Take a trip thru Oklahoma, Kentucky, or Mississippi, or Louisiana. Those are some bad roads. Your worst roads here are about on part with most roads there. NYC, and Chi-town will beat you apart as well.

$1000 is only $200 more than I'm going to pay in registration this year so maybe I'll use my 2nd residence in Ohio more often...

Like I said, this was the fine over 10yrs ago and it may have been increased since so I would check into the laws/fines before you go breaking them.

One thing that really pisses me off about this state is the robbery that is the auto registration system and insurance. When I moved here from DC, my insurance went up. Serious, you know there is something corrupt here when that happens.
