Last week's match pretty much got me hooked. I don't suppose I can borrow Hoser's shotgun forever, so I guess I'm in the market. My business is a bit slow right now (not much home building going on, so not many cabinets that need to be built), so I'd like to keep the cost down. Way down.

So, what's the best plan to get an 8rd capacity gun, pump or auto, for cheap? Buy a used 870 and add parts? Mossburg? Quit whining about the $ and buy a Benelli?

I picked up a mossy500 /w a 20 inch barrel and 7(?) round mag tube for about 275 brand new. you can get these all over! I put on a heat shield, side saddle, and 1913 rail on the top of the receiver for about 50-60 bucks. Put one of those knock off aimpoints on it for about 60 bucks too(which actually works great) and its one menacing piece!

Two options. The quit whining and get the Benelli M1/2 is the easiest and fastest. Resale value on them when set-up for 3-gunning is good.

The Benelli Nova or an 870 is a good option if you want to stick with a pump gun. Mossbergs are easy to load fast but have lots of sharp edges.

Get the Siaga if you want to get good at clearing jams and/or want to shoot open division...

get what you can afford for now and work on your shooting skills.. leave the high dollar stuff for when you can afford and appreciate it.

To get back to the original question.

Two other choices are the Winchester SX2 or newer SX3 or Remington 1100, I have a Remington 1100 Competition Master (now discontinued) and it's great. Heavier than a Benelli and harder to load weakhand, but great otherwise.

Tim, you know I keep it kinda ol school with the pump Mossy 590, but I must a say I really like matts SX2. I think I will be switching to auto for the 09 season.

Yeah, watching the autoloader shooters the other day sold me on the idea if I can find something in my price range. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for something used.

Tim-

The Benelli M2's seem to be what most guys are running, and they're pretty solid shotguns.

I have been told, but not experienced first hand, that the Remington 1100's can develop problems if you don't regularly replace a couple of o-rings.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced semi-auto option, you might keep an eye out for a used Franchi 612. That's what I run, and Nordic Components is now making after-market magazine tube extensions and bolt handles.

However, the Franchi can run into functioning problems with managed recoil slugs and buckshot, as well as some of the available birdshot loads like those made by Estate.

The solution with the Franchi is to keep it meticulously clean and to drill out the gas ports.

Had I to do it all over again, I'd get the Benelli right off the bat.

The Saiga's are neat, but I've only put maybe a single box of shells through one, so I don't have enough first hand experience to speak with any authority about them other than to state that shooting one will cause you to grow hair on the palms of your hands.

Other than that, there seem to be at least two fairly major downsides to them that I can see; running one automatically puts you in open/unlimited class, and there doesn't seem to be any quick way to do a slug transition.

Also, FWIW, in my experience Hoser isn't the type to get his panties in a bunch if someone disagrees with his choice of firearm.

Im going to go with buy a decent shotgun that you can afford, and still leave you enough money to shoot 3 gun regularly and possibly take a few training classes to work on your skills.

This will go much further than an expensive firearm.

I use an 870, basic M4 with iron sights and G 17. Soon to switch to the MP 40.
