Thought I would ask you guys for votes on this subject. If I want to stay on my side of town, not drive too far on this beautiful snow day, and go get some BBQ- where should I go? Not just for a sandwich, but maybe bring home a pound or more of great brisket.
Famous Dave's, but that's kind of a drive from Edgewater...

I think I found it- Big Hoss BBQ on Tennyson near me. Very well written up, not far away, and has everything I want.

I've never heard of it. Let us know how it turns out!

I think a pound of brisket to go, some KC-style pulled pork, house made mac and cheese, hand cut fries and fried pickle spears (all take-out) sounds about right.
You might check out Moe's - http://www.moesoriginalbbq.com/locations/bearcreek.aspx
A bit farther but well worth it. Even my buddy from South Carolina agrees

That's would be because the boys who started Moe's are from Alabama..

Well there ya go. It's my goto BBQ, the cornbread and sauce alone are worth it.

There is a Dickeys in Westminister, it's close to the Yak and Yeti.

Moe's is great, but for a nicer place like for a date, Jezebels in lohi has great BBQ. The baked Mac & cheese and peach cobbler is good too.
One of the nice things about my wife being from KC, when we go back to visit her family it's all local BBQ places all weekend long. I usually hit up Hickory House out in Parker for BBQ here. If I'm up on the NW side sometime I'll have to check out Big Hoss.

Really wish they'd build a Rudy's up near or in Denver. Stopped in there Sunday after fly fishing 11 mile canyon and feasted like it was going out of style!

Dickeys?? That's like recommending McDonalds to someone looking for a gourmet burger.

Haha, I'm definitely going to look up Big Hoss and Moe's, but from what I've experienced personally out here, most BBQ places are WAY OVER PAR compared to what I'm used to (from GA). Famous Dave's is just under par, and their brisket is good with the right sauce...KT's, ribhouse, lazy dog, to name a few...not so much.

Big Hoss: Breaded pickle spears with their "bbq sour cream dip"- don't bother. Fries were great and they give a lot. Mac & cheese is bomb. Pulled pork is good, brisket very good, Big Hoss Sauce is killer!

Exactly what I was thinking.

Asking for opinions about BBQ is much like asking which brand of AR is best, or the age old AR vs AK discussion. Different regions of the U.S. have very different styles of BBQ and folks like what they like.
There are 4 main regional styles of BBQ: KC, Texas, Memphis, and Carolinas. There are also other, larger regions which I disagree with like "Missouri" which tends to lump both KC & St. Louis together - faux pas. But you've also got Hawaiian & Californian which are okay, but not what I'd traditionally consider true BBQ. Virginia & "Southern" are usually some mix between Carolinas and other styles.
KC style is my personal favorite since I grew up in & around KC. My dad used to own a BBQ joint outside of KC. Ths style is characterized by a variety of meats (beef brisket, pulled pork, pork ribs, etc.), dry rubbed & smoked, with a thick sweet tomato & molasses based BBQ sauce just dripping off of everything. Most smoking is done with hickory.
Memphis is usually a spice rubbed dry BBQ on pork ribs & BBQ sandwiches. IMHO, without it swimming in sauce, it just ain't BBQ even if it is smoked & has spices. Typically, hickory & oak are used to smoke te meat.
Carolinas style (and most all "Southern") uses vinegar in their preparation & sauces which I despise. Most Carolinas style is pulled pork. Usually, hickory, oak, and various fruit tree wood is used for smoking.
Texas style is usually beef; briskets & beef ribs are most common. Most of the Texas BBQ sauces I've eaten are similar to KC styles so ths is my second favorite style. There are different Texas regional styles which also use mutton or barbacoa (cows head) and different sauce types. Most Texas smoking styles use mesquite for smoking.
*********
I can't speak for any of the Denver places (esp. the NW side), but I can outdo Famous Dave's in my sleep (at least the one in the Springs, I assume they're all relatively the same). The best BBQ I've found in CO so far has been Hickory House (but the Aspen location is better than the Parker location for flavor). In/near the Springs Rudy's is the best, but I'd still prefer to drive to Parker for Hickory House.
It sounds like I need to check out Big Hoss some time, but if Moe's is a Carolina style, I know I won't enjoy it; vinegar (malt) belongs on battered fish.
Just my $0.02.

Both the brisket and the pulled pork from Big Hoss were only drizzled with sauce, they leave that to the eater. I like to taste the meat before more sauce is poured. I thought the brisket the more flavorful of the 2 without but a taste of sauce on it.

I meant this
The Dickeys in Westminster has nothing to do with the BBQ of Dickeys in Waxahachie, a franchise that only has a name in common with the real thing.
In/near the Springs Rudy's is the best, ...
Totally agree. I've tried most other places in C/S, but I always head back to Rudy's.
I like my BBQ like I like my women: hot and sweet!
Fun fact: Rudy's is a chain that started in TX. However, the company/firm who builds the buildings is located in C/S. That's why we have one.

For a while I was thinking about going to culinary school bit as many have stated in other threads, if you turn a hobby into a job you lose interest because it's now a job.

Sorry guys but there is no real BBQ in NW Denver or anywhere in Denver for that matter. I have to 3/4 of the places you mention and they are all tragic. Boss Hog was the only one remotely edible. I am a Texan so BBQ is the state food, especially brisket. If you ever get near Austin go SE to Lockhart or NE to Taylor and have the real thing. I tried Jim N Nicks the other day in Northfield as we might have a company dinner there. Sunday lunch was packed and it was awful. A nice mgr type tried to make some sliced pork for me but failed twice. He comped my meal, which was no real favor, the sides were not even scratch made as they bragged about, my friends chicken was dry as a bone, the mac/cheese looked and tasted like a Shamrock delivery.....all these places are the same here. I included some pics from a Texas trip a few years ago as I do reviews for a pal's blog, Meathenge. He is in Bay Area and knows a thing or three about Q etc. I cringe when I see photos of meat atop flames on some grill as you don't smoke meat that way. Note the photo of the fire on the floor and the vent draws the heat/smoke through the huge long ovens and the meats are arranged according to how they will cook/smoke. I think a few places here do the volume that would warrant correct cooking....but I have not found it. CLICK a photo to view a larger version.

Check out Piggin Out on Morrison road just east of Kipling. It's outside seating or takeout only. Stay away from the joint on Harlan (46th or 47th-ish). Why to people hate Famous Dave? They do a pretty good job. It freaks me out though that the place never smells like smoke.

If I'm doing a road trip for BBQ it wont be to California. Unless it's hickory smoked sprouts. Then I'm in.

You bring up Austin area and don't tell anyone to drive SW to Driftwood and get some brisket cut from the wet side at The Salt Lick? For shame! For the record, the best BBQ brisket I've had in this state resides at Georgia Boys in Longmont. I know the OP is looking for a specific area but since this post drifted a little bit I thought I would reply in kind.
I have heard about The Salt Lick for years, but my schedule kept me SE first after plane landed, then NE the next evening. Lot of good food down there. BUTTTT.....I just got home with a 1/2 pound of brisket from Yazoo downtown Denver. It is good. Best I have had in Denver/Boulder bar none. Kid was confused as to what sliced brisket is, " we smoke it for 22 hours so it sorta falls apart." I asked to see a slab in counter case, said I will take half of that thing, he cuts it and go to whacking and chopping on it. I said "now I will take the half that you did not ruin." I did not get anything else down there to try, brisket is my TX baseline. They are expanding the building to double its size so I will go back. There on Broadway at Champa and 22nd where they all merge. Click on photos for larger version. When they run out of food, they close for the day. Good lunchtime crowd.

You missed out man. The Salt Lick in Driftwood (the original one) has the best brisket. Period. No other qualifiers needed for that statement.
I always used to hit up County Line in Bee Cave when I went to Austin.
I've been enjoying http://pigginout.com/new/ over near Kipling and Morrison Rd. I don't much care for their ribs, but the beef and pork was pretty good.
Country Time BBQ near Hampden and Federal can be good, but is pretty hit or miss. The owner is pretty cool, but his Wife/Daughters working the counter have been real jerks, so I don't go back much.
I had a couple of employees branch out and start running their own BBQ stand last year, Willy D's, but they closed up shop this winter. Maybe I will buy the stand from them....hmmm....
Been wondering about Country Time, I pass them everyday on my way home and still haven't stopped by.
Country Time used to be really good. Don't know what happened. Became all atitude all the time. Food was hit/miss but could be great. I grew tired of the beat downs just to get some lunch and they
quit doing a pork/brisket mixture sandwich. One day....." we can't do that! we can't be mixin up the meat!" man o man.....that used to be a killer lunch for that neighborhood.

Is that the little shack in the open field on the north side of Hampden just west of Fed'l?
I think it is about 2500 West, north side of Hampden, south of West Hampden Ave where all the car shops are. By the Camera Trader sorta ?? It is East of Federal then
I'll have to Try Boss Hog. Piggin' Out on Morrison and Country Time (Hampden Frontage Road in Sheridan) are both pretty good for ribs.

It was better when it opened a few years back. Rotab summed it up, hit or miss now. I quit going because they never got their shit together. They don't take debit or credit, they don't have a customer restroom, and they only sell drinks in a can. It pisses me off too, it is close enough to the house that I drive by it nearly every day. Just as well, I'm already fluffy.
Just got back from Georgia Boys. Delicious, my mother and sister really enjoyed it too.

I worked near there for a while. Funny you mention "attitude". I called it the "Angry Black Man" BBQ joint. Guy always looked like he wanted to kill someone. His wife and daughter made up for his bad/angry attitude by being extra nice and pleasant. I probably only got takeout from there 2 or 3 times but it was always very good.
Can't stand Piggin' Out...worst I've had in Colorado. Only ate there once but it was horrible.
Still like Nordy's and Serious Texas BBQ (OK...in a BBQ emergency) but both are up north.
Now, for a real surprise, there's a little diner in Grant right on Hwy 285 called the Kenosha Cafe (don't confuse it with "Al's Pits" with all the yellow signs a little farther up the road). Zack, the owner/chef, made a brisket last weekend that was far and away the best I've had in Colorado...anywhere. It's a great place for breakfast and he's trying his hand at a few new things. Smoked with apple wood provided by a friend of mine. He doesn't always have the brisket but it's worth the drive from anywhere to try it. Breakfast is fantastic, too. If you happen to be going that way it's worth stopping for.
