I recently purchased a Bushmaster AR15/A3 and have been trying to find optics for the rifle. Ideally, I would like to have an EOTECH 512 but the cost is somewhat prohibitive and I am not very familiar with red dot sights. I am looking for a recommendation if anyone can make some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate (both pro and con remarks will really help).
Thanks Don
The 512 and all EOs are good scopes and fast to use. I have a few. Aimpoint also makes a good scope as far as dots go.
Dont overlook Ultra Dot brand. They are awesome scopes. The biggest plus being that the dot is round. They are very popular with the bullseye pistol crowd. Many are slide mounted and they hold up to the beating they get there just fine.

Don't skimp on glass. I have wasted a lot of money only to fork out the dough for the one I wanted originally. EoTech can be had pretty cheap if you shop around or buy used.Same with Aimpoints. ACOG is considered the mack daddy. I have used Aimpoints and EoTech and PREFER EoTech. I have never used an ACOG, but have only heard good things about them.
i have eotech in stock if you want one.

Eotech 512 GTG-as previously stated don't skimp on your optics, you'll only regret it later !!
As it's already been said, don't skimp on optics. The 512 is a great entry level EOT unit with a very common battery type. If the EOT isn't your gig, the the ML2 AimPoints are in approximately the same price range. The big immediate difference costs wise is that you will most likely find yourself changing the mount out on any AimPoint until you find one that fits you. With the EOT line you might end up looking at a riser, but unlike many I prefer an absolute co-witness with my irons so I don't add risers to my EOT's anymore.
I've tried many types and qualities of optic and while I'm a pretty die hard EOT fan I realise that I need different optics for different roles.
ACOG's generally engender sticker shock. But in glass you get what you pay for. You can buy all kinds of knock offs, but you'll just end up selling them at a loss later. Save your pennies and keep a watch on ARFCOM EE and here, the deals come by often, just be ready to drop the hammer and be the first to post you'll take it.
If you really want to try out an EOTech, for a tad bit of collateral I'll lend you a 552 (NV capible version of the 512) for a weekend to try out, or you can hit one of the club shoots and try a wide variety of optics set ups.
