View Full Version : Neighbor continously parking in front of house.

The HOA has defined that cars must be garaged, if left parked it shouldn't be over 24 hrs. I honestly don't care on way or the other, but I do care when the neighbor and his guests continuously park in front of my house for days on end leaving the space open in front of his house. I have left 2 notes, and this is still happening. Can I call the sheriff to have the car towed if over the 24 hour period? I would like to leave the space open for obvious reasons, service calls, my guest, etc. Has anyone else had this issue?
Below is the parking Policy:
Parking Policy: Garages are intended for the storage of
vehicles; no abandoned or inoperative vehicle is allowed to
be parked or stored on any visible portion of the community
at any time except during the transport to or from the
property, and then only for a period not to exceed twenty four
hours. The County will monitor and enforce by ticketing
and/or towing vehicles improperly parked, inoperable, or that
have expired tags. If you have specific concerns regarding
parking infractions at Ladera, please contact the Arapahoe
County Sheriff’s Office at (720) 874-4165

Public street, anyone can park there. If it stays over the limit set by the city then yes can call and complain.
Cut his tires. That will send the message. Won't clear the space for a few days but I bet it doesn't happen again.
Or be nice and just deflate them.

You could knock o his/her door and ask nicely that you need that space. I had a similar deal yearrs ago and this was all it took.
That policy seems pretty clear to me, but you may want to give them a few days, instead of jumping on it after 24hrs.. if you've left notes before, maybe leave one more with your number and ask them to call you. Be cordial and point out that they're parked in front of your house or it would be less of a deal to you...

Yep. Pretty much this.
Start parking your stuff in front of his house for days on end.
One of my douche bag neighbors parked his truck in front of my house and overlapped my driveway about two feet. I just backed out around it because I didn't feel like dealing with the idiot. If it wouldn't have hurt my vehicle, I would have just backed into his and waited to see what the cops would do.
a little coyote bait and or skunk urine in the area directly below the windshield (where the hvac air comes in) real cheap at sportsman's warehouse works great or so I've heard.[NoEvil]

I would file a complaint with the HOA first. Did you leave the notes somewhere the homeowner would find them (mailbox, front door)?

Yeah I have, and just filed a complaint with the HOA. He keeps his spot open, but yet uses the one in front of my house... If I was back in Louisiana, I would just give his ass a good ass whipping and be done, but up here in Lib land, I gotta play polite...Maybe leave a chicken head ,and bones on his car, maybe the point will be understood...

Thats the way I read it as well.
my Parents had a go-round with their HOA about the same thing. Properly licensed/registered, insured vehicles legally/properly parked on public streets where not prohibited by duly erected signage may park without restriction of time limit or 'zone'.
I hate it they choose to park in front of your house, perhaps you need to have a "CO AR-15 Come over and look at my yard" day and about 40 cars full o buddies fill the street in front of HIS house. When they see what a nuisance it is, maybe they will be a little more considerate.
or, you could just go over with two beers and chat with him.
I know a guy on here who pretty much bought an extra vehicle to park in front of his home just so his neighbors wouldn't park there.
or maybe you could invite your local Sons of Silence chapter over for beer and barbecue and they could kindly ask the neighbor to move so they can park their bikes for the party.

Photograph, document, advise the HOA. Or if you think it'll be effective, contact him in person.

It would be a waste of a beer...Liberal....
Is it actually someone who lives there or someone visiting someone who lives there?
I am much more tolerant if my neighbor has guests and they park in front of my house than I am of my actual neighbor doing it.

This. The law is pretty clear about this, and a vehicle can be parked for quite a while on a residential street before it would be considered abandoned.
Our neighborhood is pretty FUBAR on this stuff. It really depends on where you live. Too close to the HOA Enforcement Thugs, and they get in your face. Farther away, and anything goes, apparently. We have rules that prevent you from working on a car with the garage door open. Sigh.
Moving out on Friday, and I couldn't be happier about it.

I don't know about the vindictive stuff. When I was a 20 something fool, I parked across the street from my (rented) house one night. It was dark.
A while later this guy comes POUNDING on my door, freaking out about how I parked in front of HIS driveway. Well, it wasn't his driveway, he just wore a path through his grass into his back yard for his trailer.
He was going ape shit about me being a stupid hippie fuck (which I pretty much was back then) but I just waited for a pause and asked him "Why are you screaming at me? I'll move the car bro."
He waved at me every time he saw me after that.

My Cali-douche neighbors across the street do this all the time. They have a three car garage but only park their cars in front of my house, not theirs. I can't do anything about it but it certainly adds to my hatred.
Not everyone possesses a sense of humor about people doing vindictive stuff to their vehicles when they are legally parked in a public street. Unless you OWN the pavement where these folks are parking, it's not really any of your business where they choose to park. If they are parked in such a way that you cannot exit your garage, call a tow truck and have them towed. Otherwise, it's probably best to find a different topic to whine about.

Hey, if going the civil route doesn't work, there are many, many ways to F with folks. Think of what you can do with Crazy Glu (locks, widsheild wipers glued to the glass, a giant "DONT PARK HERE" drawn on the windsheild, etc.).
If the street is a public street your HOA can not dictate anything to them. If the street is a private street the HOA has authority. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do if the car parked in front of your house is registered.
If I were you I'd call the cops and report an unregistered car every time their license plates were stolen ;)
Or you could just buy a bunch of cars to park in front of your house and stop the problem.

I am sure there is a member here that has a running, oil leaking current tagged junker rolling trash heap that they would let you borrow to park in front of your neighbors house.
And when they complain to you about it, just say "I have no where else to park because you and your guests are always parking in front of my house"..........
First world problems..

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. I don't know why, but my neighbor has a corner house, with more street parking than anyone in the neighborhood. He chooses to park in front of my house! I don't complain, nor have I mentioned it, because others have pointed out that it is perfectly legal and I don't have HOA. He doesn't even use his driveway, just parks in front of my house and leaves his driveway empty, I'm not sure why. I also have a side yard with an improved driveway for my camper, he consistently parks in front of it. I've had to ask him to move several times to access my camper or park it when I've come home from camping, you would think he would get a hint. He is a total lib too, I suspect that is the reason, no respect for personal property. Anyway, some day I'll move to the country and trade my existing problems for new one's. Sigh.
cheers,
Tim
I have to wonder if people park across the street because they are too lazy to do a U-turn in the morning or some other equally dumb reason. I have a harder time sleeping when my car is on the street as opposed to in my driveway, why anyone would CHOOSE to park in the street is beyond me.

This is an easy fix, once upon a time i lived in the city also, same issue, neighbor would drive past her own house to park in front of mine cause i had a large maple that would offer some shade, bitch park in front of your house
Solution: i strategically aimed a sprinkler head from my front lawn to nicely water her car. If you have the lovely water quality of most denver suburbs you know that when dried in the sun those spots will have to wear off before they come off
Two days and she never parked in front of my house again
Problem solved
Parking on the street is just risky in some areas. There's an area in my neighborhood where punks hang out and drink their beer and then break all the glass bottles. Glass everywhere!
I like the sprinkler idea.
I'm not sure talking with him would work- if you've already left two notes and there's been no response, I'm not sure it's worth it.
Have you tried parking your car in front of his house? Or leaving something parked in front of your house that precludes him from leaving his vehicle there?

Stop writing notes, walk to their home and politely ask the person face to face to not park in front of your house.
Also...
Anyone that will vandalize a mans property(for WHATEVER reason) whether it be their home, car, etc etc is a fucking pussy. If a person doesn't have the balls to handle either with words, or fists and must stoop to cowardice such as vandalism, they are a scumbag. If a person will go this far the might as well steal the radio too, its on the same piece of shit level as a thief.

Now the guy around the corner he's a PITA.:)

I agree, one or two politely worded notes should have taken care of it. If not, then a face to face discussion (amicable if possible) is in order. Following that... it's a deliberate attempt to annoy you, and should be handled as such.

THIS! No apology needed... if someone gets their feelers hurt because of you calling them a pussy for being a vandal, it just goes to show how absolutely childish they are. I've had things vandalized, stolen, and unintentionally (without regard to negligence) destroyed and each case I've wanted to take the person out back and introduce them to a nice 1/2" lead pipe. [Mad] Vandalism? I ain't got time for that. If I have a problem with someone, I tell them like a goddamn man, I don't act like a mischievous teenager who's afraid of getting a beating.

There is a difference between practical jokes and vandalism. My general guidelines for practical jokes are that no one gets hurt (physically) and nothing gets permanently damaged.
I'm glad it got resolved. Had it not, I'd have resorted to something other than the vandalism proposed in so many responses -- something like, get a friend with an incredible eyesore of a junkheap to park in front of your neighbor's house until someone complains to the HOA (assuming the junkheap is his because it's in front of his house).
Complain to the HOA. If that does nothing, put little pebbles in the top of his valve stem, glue them in place. This will cause a slow leak. They will check the tires, find nothing, and put them back on. The tire keeps getting low now matter what they do. This is a fun thing to watch.

Go to the next HOA meeting and raise a stink. Also check local parking laws and call the authorities when one is broken. For instance, it is illegal to park within 5 feet of a driveway opening in a lot of areas. A dirtbag neighbor renter once decided to market her car for sale in front of my house, leaving the POS there for days on end. She'd avoid me like the plague, even when I left my car in front of her house to return the favor. I learned marketing a car is illegal on a public street in my town. I called them in, and parking enforcement was there within minutes.

I had this same problem, to make it worse they were leaving trash next to their car and directly across the street from me is the neighborhood parking lot for guests. I like to park my work truck in front of the house when I get home, as the garage holds both mine and my wife's cars. I waited for them to leave and moved my my POS rusted out bronco from the parking lot across the street to the spot in front of my house, since I only use it as a hunting/fishing vehicle it didn't move for months, and they quit using that spot even after I eventually moved it.

I had this happen. Marilyn Manson works great. Especially the song where he says he's not a slave to a god that doesn't exist lol
I live in a cul-de-sac next to a park. Every summer I had the same group of people park in front of my house, no problem except they always threw their beer bottles and trash in my yard! One day before they got there, I "accidentally" spilled a box of screws where they park. Now they park elsewhere:D
