So right now I'm window shopping parts for a custom AR build. I have a Shadow Ops on order, but other than that, everything is theoretical at this point. I have this nagging feeling I'm missing all sorts of parts and pieces because of my unfamiliarity with the lower level details of the platform. Feel free to make suggestions on the order of "that would be better as part of a kit" or "I'd buy that separate" in addition to whatever I'm missing. I want to make this a fairly pain free build so I'm trying to buy kits mainly. I do however want to get good parts and something I can add to in the future, rather than replace. Let me know if I'm really making any bad decisions.
Shadow Ops lower
Lower parts kit (really want a big trigger guard)
BCM middy 16" lightweight upper w/ BCG and Charging Handle
magpul mid handguard
Magpul back up rear sight
Some sort of stock kit (I've yet to find these... Seem to be stocks only)
sling
case
im concerned I'm missing things especially on the stock section like a buffer and castle nut. I'm hoping you can suggest a stock kit that has this stuff.
Anything else?
any special tools I need other than what I have standard around the house? Anything fancy to stake the nuts?
Thanks guys!
buffer tube castle nut end plate buffer spring and buffer hit up bowers tactical they are close to you and good guys. you will also want a different grip than what comes in the lpk and have the enhanced trigger guards you want.
ETA you will need the castle nut spanner wrench that i am sure someone would lend you as far as staking i just use a center punch and give it a couple solid whacks
Sounds like you have a good handle on it. As far as the parts for the stock, Bowers Tactical in Centennial probably has all of that stuff in stock. You'll need a buffer tube, castle nut, end plate, buffer, and buffer spring as well as the stock itself.
Good luck. [Awesom]

Ha. You beat me by mere seconds. Looks like we both pointed him to Bowers. [Flower]

Yup.
Then all you are missing is a video of you doing a mag dump!

Thanks!!
Luckily prices are dropping every day it seems. Saw a bunch of Colt LE6920 with magpul furniture for $1200 yesterday. Almost pulled the trigger but decided I could now get EXACTLY what I want for about the same price.

It's a great option for those of us that don't want to hunt down parts. I used this kit to complete my most recent upper and have been happy with it.

BCM has 16" Middy's In Stock for $460. How does this price compare to pre-panic? Did BCM up their prices dramatically? Will I get a better deal if I wait 6 months?

No handguard, BCG or CH for that price. A complete upper is $830. That is about $200 over pre-panic prices. A 16" barrel w/FH, receiver, barrel nut and gas block I was able to go find all those parts in stock for a total of $360. Add the other parts to make a complete upper and you are at $690. So the prices are okay based on current prices. in 6 months, it is still anyone's guess, but my hunch is the prices won't be going back to pre-panic prices ever again. If you wait 6 months you might save $100, but it might cost you $100 more. The prices for ARs lat 2011 to early 2012 were the lowest I think we will ever see for $/quality.
