Forget Mayday, today's holiday should be "Rick Monday Day!" -I know, the double day does sound weird. 37 years ago today "the Greatest Play in Baseball" (there's a 3-year old thread on this already but I decided to make this to dedicate today to Rick Monday Day) took place when Rick Monday saved the US Flag from being burned...
Story: 37 years ago today, two protesters attempted to burn an American flag in the outfield of Dodger Stadium. A baseball player by the name of Rick Monday of the Chicago Cubs rushed over and grabbed the flag to thunderous cheers. The two protesters were arrested and Monday received a standing ovation from the LA crowd when he came to bat. He was later quoted saying, "If you're going to burn the flag, don't do it around me. I've been to too many veterans' hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it."

The hell of it all is that he got applauded 37 years ago for saving the flag while the worthless lamestream media and OWS protesters would lambaste him for those actions today.

"He violated their Free Speech, man!"

As a lifetime Cubs fan, I love Rick Monday. He's also a fraternity brother of mine.

As a lifetime non-Cubs fan (Rockies- ugh, now I know how the Red Sox fans felt for 80 years), I also love Rick Monday! [Beer]
So do you know him through your fraternity? If so, shake that man's hand every chance you get!

I have a baseball glove signed by Rick Monday, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Ted Spangler, and Randy Hundley.
I waited for them after the games...Santo used to park in the garage across the street (on Clark) and always come out later that the others.
However, he ALWAYS stopped and signed as much stuff for as many people that wanted it. A REAL nice guy.

Ernie Banks (aka Mr. Cub) was hired to ride in our Little League parade. He refused to sign anything we (the little league-rs) presented to him nor would he shake our hands.
(What a disappointing memory...)

I also got some autographs at the CUBS vs. Globetrotter's basketball games they put on at many suburban high schools for charity.
My brother has the "Rick Monday" autograph on his glove...Rick was his hero.

Rick ended up playing for the Dodgers and was one of their announcers, and I think still does Radio for the Dodgers. Class guy.
