Looks like Steven Spielberg is going to direct Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle in the movie version of 'American Sniper'.
Interesting.

Well if the movie is half is good as the book it will a tribute to a awesome soldier and human being and one bad mfer. Spielburg only takes on stuff he can knock out of the park so it should be interesting to so what way he goes at it. The book is a good read but I'm not sure how you do justice to one of best snipers in out day in a movie fit for public viewing.

He's a good director, but I don't much care for his politics. I'm not expecting to be impressed.

The book was great, if the movie is half as good as the book it should be better than anything out lately.

I think Cooper could do alright... he hasnt done anything like this before, but he is one of those guys that can do a lot.. not my first choice, but still. and hes been producing it for awhile I guess...

trying to think about like a plot line for the movie?? the book is basically him telling stories, which is awesome dont get me wrong, but potentially hard to translate..

Name an actor who is a legitimate bad-ass.
And Marky-Mark is not a legitimate bad-ass. It's acting; if the director and actor are good, they will be able to portray anyone as anything.

Marky Mark would have been a better fit? Seriously? Yeah he did okay in Shooter but you're seriously ragging on Cooper as a pansy then raising Marky Mark as an alternate?

In answer to mtnhack, Vin Diesel worked as a bouncer. That's the closest "legitimate bad-ass" actor I can think of at the moment; unfortunately, the generation of actors who actually went to war has essentially retired or died.

It's all a moot point ... I suspect Spielberg will try to make it an anti-war film like he did with Saving Private Ryan. Can't say I'm too interested in the movie at the moment.

I can name a few... R Lee Ermy -former Marine, I need say no more; Chuck Norris- do I really need to explain this one?; Harrison Ford- yep, real-life BAMF, he crashed a helicopter and walked away, among other things; Christopher Lee- former British Special Operations, worked with Ian Flemming in WWII; Kurt Russell- Racecar driver, aspired to be a martial arts badass, and was one helluva baseball player in his youth; Danny Trejo- lived a lot of the roles he portrayed (except vampire, that was 100% fiction); Mickey Rourke- former boxer with 17 KOs; Lee Marvin- WWII hero and very successful hunter; Dolph Lundgren- Champion martial arts expert, could possibly beat the everloving shit out of Steven Seagal; Steven Seagal- Also pretty much plays himself in all of his movies, plus he's a deputy sheriff in Louisiana; Robert Mitchum- lived on the streets growing up (great depression era) and escaped a damn chain gang at age 14!; Mel Brooks- WWII hero; And of course, perhaps the most badass of all: Audie Murphy- if you don't know who this guy is, come, join us in the land of the people who don't live in a fucking cave! True- they are all either A) too old, or B) no longer among the living. [Coffee]
Although, the guy playing in Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg is pretty badass- Taylor Kitsch. Ya know, for an actor. But I agree, they could have cast about 6 guys better suited to play Chris Kyle than Brad Cooper. I personally liked Alexander Skarsgard in Generation Kill.

Cooper is a good actor. That's all he needs to be. It's freaking movie, which is entertainment. Much like Kyle's book (which I loved).

If you want real "bad asses", you'll get Act of Valor. When watching movies, I'll take a great actor over a great operator any day.

Besides, if you think the movie with be a direct adaptation of the book, you're smoking the good shit.

Okay, so there are very few Hollywood actors who are actual BAMF's. So, why not go to the source of "bad-assery" and find a real U.S. Sniper to fill the shoes? Of course, he would have to be able to act and tolerate Spielburg (might be the bigger of the 2 challenges). Just a thought.

You end up with acting like Act of Valor when you do that... Great action... Very little dialogue

I hope they will represent Chris Kyle properly. I also hope they are accurate portraying the cowardly hit and run enemies our boys have been fighting (to me that is less likely).
I will see the film only to support the Kyle family and our troops.

All those bagging on Bradley Cooper might be interested to know that it was HIM who campaigned to have this movie made and Spielberg finally singed on, not the other way around. Say what you want but I could care less about the guy before this movie (my wife didn't share that opinion of him) but after that he's on my good guy list. I'm sure he could have just as easily done a shitty rated G movie to make boatloads of money if that's all he cared about. And from someone who might have to have his mother move in with him for health reasons I'm not sure why that even came up.

In the end if it gets his story out to a few more people who otherwise wouldn't know then I say good deal.

I just recently finished reading this book, the entire time wishing they would make it into a movie, but at the same time not knowing if they could do Mr. Kyle justice. I hope this movie is as good as the book as well as shows the American public just how awesome this guy was.

As for Bradley Cooper, he has some serious shoes to fill, but I believe he can do well.

Cooper is a better actor than many of the roles he's had. I think he can pull it off. I'm more concerned about Spielberg's side of the equation. It'll be fine if he brings his anti-war spin subtly but I'm just afraid he'll go over the top with his anti-war message.

He was 6'2 and at least 215 or 220. That's probably what Cooper is at in that picture. The 40 more pounds comment was really just my dislike of Cooper showing.

To add to Ronin's list:
Clint Eastwood - stunt man before he caught a break as an actor
Bruce Lee
Jet Li
Charles Bronson - flew 21 combat missions in WW II, mostly as a tail gunner
Tyrone Power - flew over 1000 hours as Marine Corps pilot including ferrying supplies into and wounded Marines out of Iwo Jima
Eddie Albert - fought in the first wave on Tarawa, received his Bronze Star (belatedly) for finding and rescuing dozens of wounded Marines
Jack Palance was a professional boxer and flew B-24s during WW II and worked as a lifeguard while he was getting his start as an actor -- anyone remember him doing his one-handed push-ups when receiving his Oscar at the ripe age of 73?
Jimmy Doohan lost a finger on D-Day
Jimmy Stewart isn't someone most people would think of as a bad ass (especially physically) but he enlisted in the Army Air Corps (he ordered no publicity when he did it) and worked hard to get sent overseas instead of being kept home as an instructor pilot when he got his wings. He flew 21 bombing missions, mostly as lead pilot on B-24s, in raids over places like Berlin, Frankfurt, Schweinfurt, etc. He continued in the Reserves and even did a bombing mission in Vietnam.

Of course, for those whose memory is limited to actors from Gen X or Gen Y ... point taken.
