Since there was some DEBATE in another thread because [some thought] you should not have a loaded gun in the home. I would ask.
IF you have a gun within reach, on your hip, ANYWHERE there is RAPID ACQUISITION.
IS IT LOADED / CHAMBERED??
LETS NOT GET IN TO a 4 paragraph diatribe why you do or DO NOT have one LOADED a simple YES or NO ..
OR I'LL ASK THE MODS TO LOCK IT.
Lets see how long this goes before a reply goes beyond 3-4 word sentences. No bashing anyone's replies etc.

The nightstand and ccw rig is never unloaded unless I'm cleaning it or rapidly reloading. Long guns however, are not loaded unless I'm at the range. A handful of mags are, and they live in the safe with the long guns...
If it's on my person for CCW then it's loaded. Bedside pistol has a mag in but no round chambered and the shotgun has rounds in the pistol safe on the nightstand. Guns in the safe have loaded mags next to them or on the shelf right above the rifles. Still have a 16 year old, so I'm not wanting to risk the whole minor having access to a loaded weapon deal that can land me in jail or getting sued. I trust the wife's kids since I take them to the range, took them to hunter's safety and have promised a severe ass kicking if they touch a gun without an adult around. It's their friends that I know come from liberal households and if they saw a gun would either go tell their parents that evil guns are in the house and it's unsafe or they'd pick one up and blow their own head off somehow.

SAFETY INFO ONLY...not meant to start an argument. For those of you who think you can chamber a round when needed:
Not Chambered = Unloaded
You should really consider a plan to load your gun one-handed in a life-threatening emergency and incorporate that into your training in the event your weak hand is preoccupied/disabled.
I don't take my carry weapon off until bedtime. It is loaded at all times.
EDC- Always.
Shotgun next to desk- No, but has 5 shells in the carrier and 5 more in the desk drawer next to it. [Beer]
Handguns = Yes.
Rifle = No. (Loaded mag in the well)

You know Jim, I just never even considered that there would be a question about having a loaded firearm to protect oneself with. If you don't have a round in the chamber what you have in essence is a unwieldy rock to throw at an attacker. Just having rounds in a magazine does not make a firearm loaded. It just makes it heavier. I personally always have a round in the chamber. I can draw one hand and shoot. I don't need to try to rack a round using my pants to try to build enough friction on the slide to get it to go all the way back. God forbid I had to do that in shorts! OW!
I see that someone mentioned that you practice drawing and racking all in one fluid motion, is that one handed? What are you a ninja? Please take a video of that and post it, I would love to see. Keep in mind that if you have to draw your firearm you are going to be in a high stress situation, adrenaline dump and everthing. Fine motor skills are going to be difficult at best. So the less fine motor movements you have to make the better you are.
Total side note, how many hear practice on a regular basis firing with their off hand only? If I pull a gun, chances are there are bullets flying back at me and I may get hit but still be able to fire. I practice one handed all the time. (Thats what she said) Left and right. I really need to put a few more thousand rounds through the pistol left handed though. Kinda sloppy and slow on that side. Makes me Jim when I miss a target, even left handed.
I do realize that many of us have young ones in the house, it would be better to get one of those biometric safes and keep a loaded firearm in that, then an unloaded one on our person. And I am meaning one in the chamber of course. I have been meaning to get one for the house myself. Really need to get on that. Figure I can lock it to the bed and have it right there should I need it.
So... Jim, was that what you didn't want to see? Crankier yet? LOL[ROFL2]

Strong / weak racking slide with either hand are all topics for Training etc. I try 1 handed target engagements as well as racking the slide with 1 hand. Not an easy task w/out stress.

I also practice one handed and off handed. This includes drawing off hand, charging the gun, malfunction corrections, and loading a magazine. Thought this was common procedure, but I'm learning it isn't.
Then again, I didn't realize most people didn't even shoot a box of fifty a month, when I try to go a minimum of twice a month and shoot no less than one hundred rounds for each pistol I take...

No way even my good shoulder could handle that...much less the bad one. I'll have to stick to the old reliable method. Give that dude props, though. Pretty slick. I wonder how that works with some smaller guns with stiffer springs and less mass in the slide...PPK/S or something similar.
Like to see him do it with 1911's. Or other pistols as was mentioned. And he's probably the only guy in the world that can do that. Like he said, more of a gimmick than a technique.

It doesn't. The smaller the mass in the slide the harder he'd have to sling it like that.... there's zero chance that will work with a micro pistol.

Another REPOST - because I thought surely someone would agree with the above. With only one cartridge in the revolver it may have to be cocked or have trigger pulled/squeezed a couple times (maybe even 5 times) before the cartridge is in line with the barrel for firing. So wouldn't the LEOs still consider this firearm as being LOADED?[beatdeadhorse]

If I recall correctly there is no statutory definition of "loaded" under Title 18 of the CRS. Title 33 requires the chamber of any long gun to be unloaded if it's in a motor vehicle and basically says "loaded" means a round in the chamber of rifle or shotgun.
That is the way it was explained to me as well.

I don't keep any gun unloaded outside the safes. My shotgun, however, is unchambered so I can do the ch-chunk as a warning without spitting out the chambered round.
