An intoxicated man pulled a loaded handgun on two Metro Transit police officers while in the back of their squad car, after a pat-down by the officers failed to find the weapon.

The man, identified by authorities as 21 year-old Wesley Rogers, had been seen "harassing" a woman at 7th St S and Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis shortly after four o'clock in the afternoon on Dec. 4, officials said. Metro Transit Ofcs. Jason Malland and Adam Marvin,
assigned on a detail in the area, responded and found Rogers "obviously
intoxicated."

A pat-down search of Rogers by the officers found "an open bottle of liquor." Rather than arrest Rogers or take him to a detox facility, the officers decided to take Rogers to his North Minneapolis home as a "courtesy," according to Metro Transit.

Officers "heard a metal clunk" from the rear while driving, pulled over,
and found Rogers had pointed "a loaded .38 revolver" at them "while in a
squad."

The incident was captured on a rear-facing squad surveillance camera.

The gun was not fired and Rogers was "subdued" and taken to the Hennepin County Jail.

Terrifying. What fantasy universe exists where violent criminals under arrest still believe they have a chance at a normal life?

Too much 'hip-hop', GTA, and big-screen theater made this asshole think he had a chance.

Shame on the LEOs for putting this bitch of a man inside their vehicle while carrying a weapon.

Good on them for being alive to talk about it.

Both officers should be suspended without pay pending an evaluation and retraining on search procedures.
they failed to properly perform their job functions.

There is NO way I would let thugalicious sit behind me in a car without knowing everything he had on him/her as well as being restrained behind the back.

had "homie" had better motor function, someone might not have been going home.

Unfortunate and scary...but it happens every day even though it shouldn't. Officers fail to perform thorough pat-down searches for a variety of reasons and sometimes it doesn't turn out this good.

I was going to cover an officer at a store where an 18 year old male was in custody for shoplifting in the security office. I heard what sounded like a gunshot just as I walked into the office area. Turns out as soon as the first officer arrived and before she could even talk to the kid he was able, while handcuffed behind his back, to pull a .357 from the rear of his waistband and twist around enough to shoot himself in the head. The security guys had missed a 4" S&W Model 19 tucked into his back waistband.

These guys were lucky. It looked to me that maybe the guy was trying to hide the gun rather than harm them with it. But who knows?

Glad all turned out safe. Carelessness and apathy can often be painful in high risk jobs.

Lucky for them. Guy is damn retarded if they were just giving him a ride home. Obviously he had even more to hide.

Well it did say they were simply taking him home, he wasn't under arrest so no need to cuff him, but I agree they should have been more thorough in their pat-down. Glad they weren't hurt.

There's no fixing stupid! Could have had a ride home and been in the clear.

Someone was looking out for those cops!

Another good training film for police officers.

You only find what you are looking for. If you don't think something is there, you will not find it because you aren't looking for it.

Some mistakes will kill you. The mistakes that don't should be considered a learning experience.

Be safe.

Just want to comment that situations like this help build how officers react to certain situations. "Why didn't the officer do this/that?" "Why couldn't the officer have just ...?"

Maybe it's because a few days, weeks, months, years before they tried to cut someone a break and almost got killed.

I agree. I treat them with respect and most will respect my right. Although once I got handcuffed by ICE enforcement for no reason - that was fun. Ok no really, I almost cried.

The thing is you can pay down thousands of people it only takes one time to miss something that could end your life. Lucky for these officers they lived through and you learn more from your mistakes than you do from finding things on people. It would be a safe bet that neither of these officers will ever make that mistake again.

I personally know a guy who was hauled into jail while still CCW after a pat down. Long story and. Lot of money was spent.

They're very lucky that this one mistake the guy was as drunk as Hilary Clinton when she fell down and bumped her noodle.

Even after years on the job, I can never be certain what goes on inside anyone's mind, impaired or sober. Because the guy had a gun, does not predestine that he would use it to shoot someone. He probably was considering his options. Most cops can tell you stories about what they find in the back of the cage car after they drop off at the cell block. One of the interesting questions I can recall being asked on the stand was; "How can you be certain that the XYZ was on my client when you placed him in the car? Couldn't that have been left behind during the transport of another individual?" For this reason, we searched the car prior to and after any transport.

Street searches are never as good as the search done on intake at the cell block. One of the things most Americans have to learn to override when going into LE is the dislike of close intimate contact with less than desirable people. Performing a good field search on an individual who has not been within ten feet of soap and water for weeks, and/or covered with various bodily fluids is not easy, but can save lives.

Be safe.

Yeah, the cops should've patted him down a little more closely. But human beings make mistakes. This guy's a stupid fuck... here the cops are being WAY cooler than Chicago cops have a reputation for being, and he decides to be brilliant and turn a chargeless ride home into a potential attempted murder of a police officer.

Reminds me of that video of the guy that had been arrested for assaulting a police officer (I think), and he was at the police station in some room. Officer left the room for a minute, camera was running, and the guy pulled a 1911 (!) out of his waistband and shot himself in the head. Unreal.

In order for the Officers to conduct a pat down they would have to articulate a reasonable suspicion that the party was armed. Chances are since he is so drunk they were just offering him the black and white taxi service and did a half-assed patdown because the guy was riding in their car. Glad the officers are okay and I'm sure it was quite the shock for them.
