Went to the match yesterday and had a great time. 5 fun and challenging stages plus a rifle side match. Saw some familiar faces from the old Pueblo West IDPA days. Thanks to everyone who made this possible in our area again.

If you have not shot a match before give us a heads up that you will be there. But if you have a match under your belt, just show up.

We usually start setting up 2-2.5 hours before the match.

Hope to see you soon.

Yeah, Tech0662, it's really a great group of folks, and the matches are great fun, as well as instructive. I look forward to every match. I call them shooting with a purpose; they'll definitely reveal areas of weakness that need to be worked on, which in my case are legion.

'Twas a pleasant day for a classifier yesterday: the weather was good up until the last couple of shooters, when it began to rain, but even during the warmest part of the day I never felt like someone had turned the temp. setting up to broil.

Well, I managed to just barely make it to the Marksman level, which was my immediate goal. There were only two of us shooting revolvers and I think I learned something: to keep getting better I am going to have to concentrate on not only accuracy, but speed as well. I shot the cleanest match I ever have, beating the other revolver shooter on that point handily, but he shot faster than I did and, even with his less accurate shooting, beat my score severely. (BTW, this isn' t sour grapes, congrats to the other revolver shooter.) It looks like it might be okay to drop a few points in the interest of having a shorter overall time. Now, of course, it's a balancing act and it would be easy to swing too far in the other direction, so I'll have to be careful. Damn, this stuff is harder than it looks!

06-24-2014, 06:54
It was a well run Classifier with squads small enough that you didn't stand around too long losing your mojo between stages. This was my third Classifier this year, and I wasn't as focussed as usual. I missed two heads early on, then fumbled my mag to the ground on Stage 3 String 1 behind the barrier. Ridiculous. Though my intention was to stay in control and just shoot as fast as I could call my shots, it didn't play out very well this time.

Hmmm, I hope that there's a last-minute rush of entries for this match; I thought for sure it would fill up more quickly than it has. Maybe folks are still attending to their civic duties and electing more sure-to-disappoint RINOs and they haven't yet gotten around to entering? Just a guess.

Seriously, though, let's go, people. There certainly SEEMED to be a lot of interest when it was announced at the last match. I wonder if it's because of the IDPA membership stipulation. Oh well, there are still a few days left, so there is still hope for many more participants.

Hi Folks,

The weather forecast keeps getting gloomier for the Night Shoot. Currently the high for that day is only 37 degrees with 50% chance of snow and 14 mph winds which all together makes for a miserable match. I'll make the call Friday night but unless we get hit by a tropical heatwave then I will cancel the match. Please check the website tomorrow evening for the Go/No Go announcement.

Cheers,
Mick

Glad you enjoyed the match; shooting during warmer weather is even better.

Yes, IDPA matches are a definite learning experience; keep going and you'll improve. Learn from your mistakes, and those of others.

I've found that my shooting also deteriorates as the match wears on, especially during really hot weather. I'm not sure what the cure is for that.

I really don't understand why this part of their site is broken and they don't seem to notice. I even sent an email to IDPA about it and never received a reply.

Thanks to the FRIDPA group for an excellent match down in the springs today. They were a little short-handed and had a lot of first-time shooters, but did a great job keeping things running. 6 stages, so lots of shooting. Was only my 2nd IDPA, and my son's first IDPA match, and we both really enjoyed ourselves.

One of the safety officer for our squad was on top of his game, and saved a shooter from a squib load on some commercial "re-man" ammo. The shooter was already into his tap-rack-bang drill when the SO called stop. Sure enough a bullet was stuck about 1/2 way down the barrel.

On a personal level, I learned a very valuable lesson at the match: ALWAYS chamber check every last reload before using them in a match. I had several that would not chamber; you'd think I'd know better after shooting thousands of my own reloads for years. Thank goodness I'm not too old to learn.

DenverGP
06-21-2015, 18:49
I spot check a few rounds each batch for pistol calibers, but not every one... what would cause some to chamber while others didn't?

For my AR rounds I do use a case gauge on every round after sizing and after they are completed.

So who made it out for last nights match? I got stuck working for Uncle Sam.

Irving
11-20-2017, 15:34
I went. It was very cold. Flashlight matches are difficult and a great way to reset how good of a shooter you think you are. It's kind of like any one of those sayings along the line of "Everyone has a plan until they get hit."

Mine was "Everyone has a plan until they have a malfunction in total darkness." I actually stumbled upon my round later and found that I had a light primer strike, or some otherwise unfired round. Not unusual or show stopping usually, but it was the first stage and completely threw me as I forgot what my plan was for changing mags with a hand held light. Match went a little more smooth after that, but the times are still painfully slow, especially since I shot two the stages last weekend in the daylight. There is a pretty clear division in the scores between shooters with hand held lights and those with weapon mounted lights. One stage was shot with no light at all. The only light was that provided by sporadically placed tiki torches. Another stage had you start with your light, mags, and unloaded gun on a barrel at P2. P1 was standing next to a closed mailbox. At the buzzer, you open the mailbox, grab a 3", ported, 44 mag revolver and put two rounds on a target about 2 yards in front of you. The only light was a glow stick inside the mailbox, and one on the back that pretended to illuminate the target. I couldn't see the gun at all, let alone a sight picture. I haven't even held a revolver for probably 15 years, so it was a little weird to be picking up an unfamiliar gun, and trying to put rounds into a target without even being able to see anything. I thought I was aiming center mass, but I was barely in the perf on the head. I was this --> <-- close to missing completely. As usual, Mick puts on a challenging match that prevents me from just blazing through a stage and shooting fast as I prefer.

Can't go this year, but this is a great match and worth the drive/cold. This is a great way to find out why they make weapon mounted lights, as you get your ass handed to you by lower ranked shooters with a WML while you hold your light in your off hand. Also a great way to test all that stuff you thought you'd do to shoot in the dark.
