When the SAS used to shoot through car windows like that, they were wearing goggles and baclavas to protect against the hot brass and splintered glass, ear protection too if available. You fire a rifle inside a car you won't be able to hear much of anything for a while, and brass and glass will be flying everywhere. It looked like they were actually using live rounds on a closed set for a few of those scenes . . . not sure how they could've gotten those effects otherwise.

They used blanks during the shootout, with the intention of redubbing the sound in post production. Michael Mann liked the sound of the blanks and the echo off the surrounding buildings so much, he decided to keep those sounds in.

FNC and Galil.

Look at how much improvement on AR15 from 1995.

Because those two were inspired by the movie. Apparently they didn't see it through to the end when just about everyone dies.

No you don't. Worst carbines I ever owned. Gotta 13 lb trigger pull on a good day, a mag well no one can slam a mag into under duress, no parts, no accessories, and no future. About the only good thing on them was the folding stock- just like the FN/FAL para- and the cheap auto sears that were around 10 yrs ago. I sold all of mine years ago- they only cost me $750 each. They go for $3500 now. Go crazy and buy an AR or a Tavor or an AUG.

This greatly lessens the pain of knowing ill probably never even see one

Still one of the greatest movies of all time and that scene is one of the greatest action sequences of all time. As much as I love the new CGI this goes to show you that you don't necessarily need it to have a great action sequence as it still stacks up well against the advanced CGI almost 20 years later.

Great advice. In fact, there's a Tavor available here (http://www.ar-15.co/threads/102629-FS-FT-Brand-New-IWI-Tavor-Flat-Top-16-quot-5-56-223-Black-Bullpup-w-10-Pmags-(pics))! [Flower]

+1 Don't forget about the melting handguard and over heated receiver issue after a couple mags.

Heat is one of my all-time favorite movies- and right behind it is the movie that these cool scenes are from (inspired by Heat)- The Town, which is one helluva movie.

Awesome heist and shootout/chase scene.

The Town fun fact: During one scene they're actually watching the drive-in scene from HEAT. I thought that was a cool tip of the cap from a movie that was obviously inspired by it greatly.

'I need your help. We're going to hurt some people and you can't ask me questions about it later.'

'....who's car are we taking?'

My favorite all time movie. I have about every copy made of it to include the one with 'the making' disc included. Mann is a crazy stickler for realism. He sent everyone to firearms training, actually made them do many of the scenes at the range with live ammo with a very high end firearms instructor. He also made them put on makeup and case the actual bank used for the scene after going through training with real bank robbers. The shootout scene was shot with full powder blanks to add to the realism and done in downtown LA on a closed set. The entire crew was shellshocked for days after shooting the scene, they said the actual sound and the reverb off of the skyscrapers was the most horrific thing they has all heard. After sound editing did the shooting special effects overlay, the entire production crew knew it was garbage and not even close to the horror the original shooting sounds. They used the full-blanks soundtrack.

So ya, Ridge is right. He just wasn't as wordy as I was.

Not to mention, Mann also went for realism in Miami Vice (the film- Mann also worked on the TV show)- for the .50 cal scene and the end shootout- both with impact and sound. He's one of my favorite directors... ever.

Real time draw and shoot by the bad guy, a GM USPSA shooter.

(bad video... he shoots two center mass, one to the mellon. They were going to speed up the tape, but he convinced them to shoot one real time. They didn't shoot a second run.)

All I can think after watching that (or the North Hollywood shootout) is what a nightmare crime scene that would be.

Try being a resident- one of my Army buddies grew up in N. Hollywood (He's in his early 40's) and was about a 1/2 mile away when it happened, said it was noisy and scary as hell.

Another pretty awesome scene from a Mann film (go to 1:12ish for the nice draw and hip fire):

In the making of Mann said Tom worked on that draw with an expert for weeks and that scene took multiple takes. I try and practice my draw and acquire daily.

I think we're talking about shootout scenes for the realism they bring. That Zombie shootout scene is the opposite of what makes these other scenes good.

Uh ya.. meth is some serious shit and he's a full blown addict. I think he's dry right now, but he went hard enough for long enough to be completely broke now.
