Its that time of year again boys and girls.... Rattlers are out and about.
My son was just watering the trees that are in our yard. A rattler squirmed out of a tiny hole(less than a quarter size) right by him. This was less than 10 feet from our front door. Well now the snake is chop suey. My shovel slices and dices, it is made by ridgid but thinks its a ginsue.

We have a few that lurk about here on Green Mountain. Usually two or three dogs a year just go over for a sniff and get hammered in the side of the face in their own backyard. Face really swells up, sometimes they make it... sometimes they don't. Have a lot of kids following the green belt paths to an elementary school. If I see one I'll take a shovel to it. Out in the wild I'll leave them alone.

We've got stupid little garter snake out front somewhere and the wife is hysterical. Can't imagine if it was a rattler, she'd probably burn the house down.
When we lived in Lakewood Alyssa would always catch the garter snakes.

In Florida, we had all sorts of nasty little snakes pretty much everywhere. I was not a fan. Mostly Moccasins. When I used to kayak, they would be draping the banks and swimming with me. Between them and the gators, I did my best to not capsize.
Now that I am out here, I know very little about rattle snakes. Do they just sort of hang out in the grassland, or are they mostly in the rocky areas? Also, are there any prohibitions on returning them to the great snake pit in the sky? Do they have a particularly active time of day or season? My little boy has no common sense or fear yet, so I worry about him finding one and poking at it when we go out into the wild spaces around here.

I can only comment from my experience. I've run into 2 rattlers... both on Lookout Mountain in Golden while I was running Chimney Gulch trail. Both instances happened in August. The first time I was running with my dog at about 7am and took her off leash as the single track is difficult to run with her. A buddy of mine was in front of me and stopped dead in his tracks as a rattler was coiled up in the middle of the trail trying to warm up in the sun (they are slow and lazy in the mornings). Sure enough my dog ran over it and by the time I called her she ran back over it again. Needless to say she was on her leash the rest of the run. Second time was about mid-day and going around a switchback a rattler was half on/half off the trail. Luckily it was the non dangerous end of the snake and I just took a wide path around it and kept going. I hardly take my dog on trail runs in the summer time anymore, just don't want to risk it. I've heard that dogs (if small - average size) have about 1 hour to get them to a vet before things get tricky. Just be careful in low grass, brush and rocky areas... which is most of Colorado .

I hunt Rattlers when I go out to Hoyloke, The bull Snakes get blasted too just not as much because they keep the rattler pop down. I hate friggin snakes!
I hate snakes too, but we have a bull snake that's been living in the front yard the past couple years. We've left it alone, and it's left us alone thus far. I wish it would get hungry and eat some of the damn bunnies, and I'm guessing it will likely keep rattlers and small rodents away.

Tonight at about 630pm my kids were driving me nuts. I said go pick up rocks. Not 5 minutes later they all come yelling that there is another rattlesnake by the house. My shovel is starting to have a lot of notches on it.
He was laying in the grass on top of my leach field. There really is no rhyme or reason to where snakes are. People say there is, but I have seen them everywhere out here...anyway.

Drop by when you have time. There's a bunch down the block, cute little youngun's. So cuddly.
Snakes control rodents, BIG time! If they are rattlers and near kids or dogs they are toast, if they are bold imitators, let them go. Most snakes are good, don't be too judgemental (but if there is any doubt don't hesitate to take action).

We have only had 2 here at the house and think it is because of the high number of bull snakes. Rattlers get dispatched immediately when we find them, bull snakes get pass as long as they are not within the wifes AO.

I grew up in Southern AZ. Lots of Diamondbacks. Everyone of them that came in the yard met the shovel. When I was about 9, I was riding my bike around the desert and I heard a rattle. Being a dumb boy I tracked down the source and hit it in the head with a rock. I put it over my handlebars and brought that rattler home to mama. She totally freaked and rushed me inside where I had to stay for the rest of the day until my Dad came home and gave him the shovel treatment. The snake never moved so surly he was dead, but my Mom is still a bit mad about it to this day.
These days I don't have to deal with many snakes here in suburbia. There is one snake that I see in the yard from time to time and the best I can tell he's a Lined Snake or something.

we found more since last I posted. over the weekend we were rolling out straw blankets to cover the fresh tilled soil and grass seeds we put down (in the front yard). we got to the end of one roll and laid the next roll down. as we went to unroll it there was already a rattlesnake on the piece we just rolled out. bending over to roll the blanket out, our faces were only about 2 feet away. we have seen way too many already this year.

we probably mostly see ones that are 36" ish long. I dont measure them. Most of the ones we see arent really large but they generally have had around 8 rattles. I have seen some large ones. Last year the one I made this thread about was huge. I didnt measure him but he was as big as a big bullsnake.

Taking my hunting dog out to Valhalla in two weeks for their snake avoidance class. My older has been through it twice. I don't think my younger pup will need more than once he is pretty timid. Hate to see my pups get lit up by the shock collar but it is better than the alternative. I see hunting and farm dogs there every year.

My 10 year old son was just in the barn doing his feeding chores and saw a rattler. He ran up to the house to tell me, so we went down and found him. Unfortunately he was curled up on some extension cords. I tried to move him so I could kill him. He took off under the hay stack. We went and ate supper then came back down to find him. My son had his Stoegger 12 gauge coach gun he uses for SASS. The snake had came back out and was almost under my flatbed truck (in the barn) I made sure he had a clean shot, with no chance for collateral damage (my truck, tractor, etc) Then he shot this rattlesnake. Its not big, but it could have bit him when he was down at the barn alone. Im glad its dead.

In western Oklahoma we had rattlesnake roundups in Okeene and Waynoka every year. Basically a contest with prizes for biggest snakes, most snakes, etc. A small-town festival with carnival and all the usual hoo-rah. Yes, plenty of fried snake to eat too! A big corral full of rattlesnakes is pretty impressive, but they stink something fierce.

my son blurred the snakes face. There was no head left on that snake. 12 gauge from 3 feet does a number on them.
You're telling me. Shooting them with a 9mm snake round does a number on them, I can't even imagine a 12 gauge.

My Kids just found this nice snake on the front sidewalk up against the house just a few minutes ago. One of my good mouser cats was about 10 inches away from the snake. The snake was going crazy. I have a video, but nowhere to upload it to. My cats lucky it didnt get bit. The snake didnt fair as well. both barrels of 17.4 grains of green dot over a 3/4 oz load from 3 feet. Holy crap, sounds like a honest ta gawd infestation! Best to nip that in the bud. This weekend should put them back in their holes for a bit, though. That'll just make them hungrier. Time to carry the 686 with 7 rounds of snake shot at Pawnee for a while.

You're pretty safe as long as you see them and know where they are. AND you make damn sure there isn't any more of them! They won't chase after you, and they can only strike about 1/2 their length, maybe less. You can make a catching stick very easily with an old broomstick and some string. Catch 'em live and you can either relocate them or dispatch them in a safer, less messy location.

"The price of one liter of snake venom for sale is worth $235,175 (700,000 Malaysian Ringitt) when sold on the black market, according to wildlife enforcement officials."
I doubt rattlesnake venom goes for that, but it's probably a lot more than you think it is. Not hard to do, I helped do it in high school.

Don't get me excited. I'd come over to kill a snake in a heart beat. In the city where you can't use a gun it'd be way more fun too!

I can't imagine there's enough of a supply/demand deficit to make the venom very valuable. There's several rural communities in OK, TX, & KS that have annual "rattlesnake roundups" where they catch thousands of them. There's all kinds of prize categories, and most of the snakes are butchered for meat, skins, heads and rattles, and they milk every damn one of them first. So I can't imagine there's any shortage of it. I'm sure it's worth something though.
