i have been watching the mounds get closer and closer to my property for 2 years now and we finally have a couple in our yard(and i saw a live one the other day!) is there any sort of feed i can put out to encourage the population on my property so next year i will be able to shoot them without worry of decimating the colony?

I would not feed them, they will get onto your property quick enough.

no so just leave em alone this year....and they should breed themselves up by next year?

my neighbors have had them for a couple of years now but wont shoot em

If you don't shoot them there will be AT LEAST 3x as many next year on your land. I wouldn't encourage them at all. Once they're there, they will reduce your grass to dust. The only time I would feed them is to bait them out of a hole.

Killing them actually stimulates more reproduction and their will be more, unless you are able to reduce a population by 70% in a short period of time.

DUDE WTF are you thinking?????????????? See HBar's response below. Not to mention the Lice, Fleas and general unhealthy Level 2 Biohazard condition they live in. While mice are an origin of hanti-virus, PD's can be transmitters of it too.

THEY'RE A WESTERN VERSION OF RATS. I doubt you would allow them to "take residence" in your area.

wait until your dogs get the bubonic plague and then your kids. or if you have any horses or cows that step in a hole and break a leg, you will see part of why we hate them. i think they also spread cactus and other weeds. i think they eat them and then shit them out as they travel.

Well, yeah. Shooting them is more fun, but if there's an issue with using guns in an area, feed 'em the special wheat!

No offense, but this is one of the most destructive and simply retarded ideas I have seen in a long time. Do you have any idea of the damage you would cause to not only your land, but your neighbors and the local ecosystem?

my choice of feed is a 52gr amax at or around 3900fps. It's the best delivery method available. Other methods include .177 led pancakes, they like those from your bedroom window.

Those are rattler towns. Obviously I need to get a ride down there, fix the RAT problem and knock some west of the missip sense in to you.

Agree....it's feeding time! Lead Snacks........and lot's of them. Seriously, kill em before they take over. 10 years ago I was PD free Now their in my pond dike, garden, etc. You haven't lived until they get under the house. Oh yeah, a $600+ vet bill for my dog last summer from the plague. [Mad]

I'm pretty sure my infestation came from some rat saving hippies 10 years ago when some land 15 miles away was developed and the poor things were displaced.....they actually admitted, no boasted, of relocating their little souls to more pristine environments.

Worrying about singlehandedly decimating a prairie dog town is like worrying about wiping out the housefly population in the western hemisphere with a flyswatter: Nearly impossible, but probably a good thing if you can manage it.

Hahaha I am laughing about this as the project I am was required to do this exact thing! I told them I had a 10/22 i am solid with out to 200. The grimace on the owners face made me laugh inside. On a side note if any one in the springs wants to take a recent transplant out to smoke a few I am game.

Well, although I'd never go on a prairie dog hunt, I must join the rest and say don't bait them. Especially with the problems they can cause with plague - kids or dogs, it's just expensive and miserable.

Do you have a lot of property? Can you make it more attractive to birds of prey?
Between that and some lead application, your property will hopefully be prairie dog free soon.

I just wish I had the budget for this........http://www.rodenator.com/pests-controls-videos-rodenators

It's what they use at the local airport for the grass runway.

Why not build something using a push button ignitor? Could be fun.

Now that you mention it, O2 tanks check, propane tanks check, extra welding hoses, regs., and adapters check, extra time because the economy sucks check, general overall hatred for burrowing destructive rodents check, going to scrounge the shop for an ignitor right now. I need a project![Muaha][Muaha][Muaha]

There is potential for great self destruction here! Fortunately I have more than a working knowledge of piping, gasses etc. I'm going with electric ignition to get some distance from the ignition source verses a pizo. Flash back protectors are needed also.........mixed gas (o2 and whatever is combustible) is nothing to screw with. I imagine a great amount of the commercial product cost is associated with insurance. I kinda blew myself up once....it sucked, and was an eye opener concerning the power of combustible mixtures.

Feed them?

I have nearly 40 acres out east and they are awful to have on your property.

00Tec and I have shot up to 30 in one day. We get the popultation down, and boom they are back up to size. Luckily our thining efforts have kept them back away from the house and front of the property.

Randy...I need you and some buds to assist again this Summer! lol
