View Full Version : Need advice on choosing rifle
I have decided I am going to go with a tavor in 5.45 or an Xcr in 5.45. What do you guys think? The tavor would be about 800 more due to the conversion kit, but I'd have to sbr the Xcr (I want something compact). I also like to shoot suppressed and I know the Xcr has a very adjustable gas block.

buy both, sell the one you don't like before 6/1

Hi Point Carbine. You can buy the gun, SBR it, buy a can, buy 5k rounds of ammo and still have money left over for shipping back tot he mfg'er for repairs. Then they'll give you an extra mag for your troubles.
Other than that, I have nothing of value to offer.
The Tavor would be 800 - the stamp and trust cost - the money you'd make back selling the 556 parts.
If you don't care about a not so great trigger get the Tavor.

AMMO. Do you have enough 5.45 to hold you over IF another import ban, or slow down happened? The late 80's and mid 90's were not favorable to the 5.45 crowd.
Why not stick with the AR platform and buy a dedicated 5.45 upper with Adams Arms gas piston?
Pros:
Multi use lower for caliber of choice
Adj gas system
If the 5.45 market dries up you still have an upper that can bbl swap to a 5.56 to become usable / sales potential.
Ability to SBR by the BPtactical bbl cut, thread and re-crown method
Using an AR you have the SBR lower so your investment is another upper and Tax stamp = approx $700 upper & stamp investment
Cons:
Availability of ammo
I think you need to figure out what you want first. You're talking about two ENTIRELY different platforms so it's like saying 'I can't decide between an F-150 and a Civic' I mean sure both will get you to work but other than that that's about where the similarities end. On top of that you're talking about the 5.45 round which I assume is for cheap(er) ammo? Spending $800 to save a few cents per round on ammo isn't a wise move. In addition the surplus of 5.45 that has been flooding into the country is quickly drying up internationally and once that happens you'll find that 5.45 ammo will be about the same price per case as 5.56 since components are about the same. That being said, who knows when you'll be able to get a conversion kit for a Tavor. The shipment of kits has been delayed until who knows when and once they become available I don't see that you'll be able to walk into a store and have your pick from dozens laying on a shelf. They're going to be difficult to get for quite some time especially as the rifles themselves gain popularity. Personally, the XCR is a cool system but I wouldn't own one. I've shot a few and had some FTF and FTE issues at a much higher rate than I would expect at a rifle that comes with the price tag they come with. So, even though the two are worlds apart I would suggest the Tavor as it's been battle tested (The XCR lost it's SOCOM contract on a technicality) and is a proven reliable battle rifle. The XCR is pretty picky about ammo and all sorts of variables that your traditional AR15 platform doesn't seem to be subject to which is too bad because I really wanted to love the XCR as it seemed to be what I was looking for in a rifle. It wasn't. That's just my $0.08 adjusted for inflation and I'm sure someone who knows a lot more than me will come along to agree or disagree.

I don't see the point of buying an expensive rifle in 5.45x39mm myself. The only reason to buy something in 5.45x39 is cheap surplus ammo. Its not as common right now. Its future importation is on the whim of the current administration. You are dependant upon imported ammo to feed it. And its often corrosive ammo at that.
I had an XCR many years ago -- for about 2 weeks. I didn't like it and it didn't like me.

Yours lasted about a week longer than mine. Course, I only had my Tavor for a week, too. Didn't like either nearly as much as the tried and true AR.

This was my experience too. I *really, really* wanted to love the Tavor, but in the end familiarity and ergos of the plain Jane DI AR won over. What I didn't realize was the level of familiarity/efficiency I had achieved with the AR was way beyond the Tavor system. Didn't want to pay the learning/training curve for a very different platform.
I realize they are completely different but I want a new platform in 5.45 to play with. I have an AR but let's be real we all have more toys than we need. I have 10k 5.45 rounds so I should be good for a bit but all are convertible to 556 so I don't really see the problem there. It's just cheap for now.

I would not get anything you cant/wont be able to get parts for.
Springfield M1A, you can change up the platform, still shoot 308 and make it look tacticool.
Maybe a 20 inch upper for your your other ARs...How about NFA items? Can with shorter barrel? I know the wait is long for them, but you can build it up until the stamps come in?
Good luck!
