View Full Version : Need rifle opinions
So, I was looking for something cool for a new range toy but have been second guessing myself. Let me throw out some random thoughts then you guys can chime in. Thanks.
First, I was thinking of something in .223/5.56. Maybe even something that took AR mags. But, then I realized anything in that caliber wasn't all that different than the AR platform.
So, then I thought maybe I could get an AK since I haven't had one in well over 15 years. But, then I realized I will need to buy magazines and ammo. And, there is probably a reason I haven't had one in over 15 years. I find them a bit crude and non-ergonomic for my taste.
I had a few more exotic options in mind but I don't feel like jumping through hoops and paying through the nose to acquire magazines.
Now I'm contemplating just putting together another AR and maybe buying a new ukulele.
Maybe I should just buy a new riding lawn mower instead.
Decisions, decisions....
precision rifle?
.300 or.338

Nah. Really looking for something "high capacity" and "tacti-cool".

I always have the most fun with my 22s but I also really like my H&R single shot .223 with a bull barrel and a cheap scope. Its a tack driver!

Hmm. Hadn't given much thought to "alternative" calibers.
Thanks for the idea. [Beer]

There's 6.8 spl mags on armslist on the cheap right now too...
And, I already have some 30 round mags for the 300 Blackout. [Coffee]

Gas piston AR... too bad I just missed the CMMG gas piston kit that sold!

Not really a fan of piston ARs. But that new Sig piston AR is supposed to be pretty sweet.
How about a Springfield M1A, you can chant the platform up, there are lots of options with making it even more tacti-cool and still has that higher capacity mag for them too.
What about a super nice 20 inch barrel for one of your lowers?
last idea, NFA items, I know the wait might be a long one, but you can still buy all the parts and build one up until you get a new can. I have always wanted to do a short barrel AR with a can or shorter barrel.
Good luck Ray, I am sure that whatever you decide to do, it's gonna be bad ass like your other guns.

Didnt you already take a ride on this boat?
I vaguly remember finding something shiny at a chance moment and you blew it off like what a sailor on shore leave would do to a cheap whore?

M14/M1A
dress it all up in tacticool stocks (sage, etc) and it's a hell of a platform

Sort of. I blew off the idea of running that caliber with a carbine gas system. I might entertain doing another one with a pistol gas system though.
The M1A/M14 appeals to me but I might do one of the shorter SOCOM versions.
I find it strange that when things pop up for sale that I want I usually don't have the money at the time but when I have some money set aside I can't find anything to spend it on.
subgun?
ar in 10mm?
I have always wanted some sort of 9mm carbine.
Hmm.
More to think about.
Could get an AR in 300 AAC, it'll use AR mags.

Did you get your Tavor?
You could always build one of those AR pistols for the tacticool effect, maybe use someone's 3D printer to customize the pistol grip, buffer and barrel shrouds?

I am giving you crap you know that right?
What happened to that pretty Black AR you just posted pictures of up? Or did you go the way of the Banzai already? [Flower]

That is my life as a whole description, I just blame it on bad Irish Luck and Murphys law. ................and being a poor white boy.
9mm (or 10mm for mo funner) Carbine...take a look at Thureon Defense. I have shot most of their variants using both magazines options. The metrics (9mm and 10mm) with Glock mags are pretty sweet. A more reliable, cheaper and easier to get mags option than a 9mm AR.
I set aside the PCCs in favor of the .300AAC/BO/Whisper path. Working on my second, but I think the plan for the third is going to be the bomb.
Then again, if you are really bored and like the AR platform...try one in a 6.5/6.8 or better yet a .450Bushmaster for some Thumping.
Did you get your Tavor?
No. Decided for the money it doesn't offer much of anything different than an AR other than the "cool factor".

It's in the safe. Hoping to have some time to shoot in June. Maybe.
Everyone has an AR.
I just want something different.
I did see a 458 SOCOM "kit" the other day. Had the barrel, gas block, flash hider, and a complete bolt carrier group for about $550.

The one thing I think it offers is SBR-like convenience without having to register an SBR -- well, that plus you can mix and swap mags with your other ARs (not something you can do with a Steyr or PS90). I like having compatible equipment and ammo so the Tavor is a nice complement to my 20-inch A2-style AR just as the Storm is a nice complement to my M9/92fs.
Get a sar48 and call it a day or you can always do a suppressed SBR build (Piston setup?).
Sent from my Otterbox Defended Tactical iPhone using High Capacity "Clips".
I have an AK that is chambered in 5.56x45 that has an adapter to use M16/AR15 mags. I have very limited experience with it but so far I like it.
An Armalite 180B takes standard M16/AR15 mags. The earlier AR180's take mags that can be made from standard M16/AR15 mags. The modified mags will still work in an AR15 or M16.

Ray this should be a hint... Maybe you should save this money until you do find something you really want. Not, lets find something to buy because we have some extra money.
Just saying... Might be a new way of life!
Glad I could help.
Can you do a brother a favor and lend me some $$?

Looks like that's what I'm doing for now. I'll just keep an eye on the trading post until something pops up that calls to me.
I even passed on a really nice one of these today....

No problem. I'm not exactly an expert player by any means but I know just enough to amuse myself and sometimes others.
i recently picked up a mas 49/56 (7.62x51/308) that im pretty pleased with
Range Toy = PS90
Bang for the Buck = FAL
Or upgrade the optics on what you have - if you have not already. I love nice optics - turns what you have into a whole new rifle.

Man that FAL you posted Ray is sexy. I don't think I would have been able to contain myself.

Kicking that idea around as well. Maybe an ACOG.

Beretta ARX-100 with 300 Blackout barrel. I know you said the Tavor didn't have enough advantages over the AR in your eyes, but if it's a range toy, then who cares? It's a blast to shot, and isn't that what matters in a range toy? Have you considered a sig 556/551A1?
