Police in Federal Heights are investigating the shooting death of a woman who was killed by a bullet from her recently purchased assault rifle.
The incident happened Tuesday night in the garage of a home in the 10000 block of Elliot Circle, said Lt. Gary Toldness, a Federal Heights Police Department spokesman.
Police were called to the home on a report of a shooting; when officers arrived they found the victim, 22-year-old Anastasia Adair, in the garage.
She was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, Toldness said.
The incident was first reported by 7News.
Adair and her husband, Dana "Shane" Adair, 40, were drinking beer in the garage with three other people — described as housemates — when Anastasia went into the home to get her recently purchased rifle to show it off, Toldness said.
Witnesses told investigators Anastasia Adair was coming downstairs back into the garage and was handing the rifle to Dana Adair when she slipped or stumbled. The rifle discharged and she was hit in the head. Dana Adair was close enough to his wife that he caught her as she fell.
"At this point in time, we are looking at this as an accidental shooting," Toldness said.
An autopsy is scheduled Friday.
As part of the investigation authorities will look at how much alcohol was in the victim's system.
"It's not a good idea to be handling weapons while you're intoxicated," Toldness said. "It's always a bad mix."
Toldness described the rifle as an assault weapon, an AK-47 or similar style rifle. He said the clip, which holds 20 to 30 rounds, was about half full.
"She had just purchased it recently ... and decided to show it off," Toldness said.
All of the witnesses' statements were consistent, and initial ballistics back the description of what happened, Toldness said.
"Their stories are consistent, and consistent with the physical evidence we found."

There is so much WTF here. Carrying a loaded gun to show your friends? Safety off? Drinking, "here hold my beer why I go get my new AK?" And the Post's "Assault Rifle" slant.

THIS! Maybe you and Jim can post up a friendly little how-to on naming a thread? I mean, I get it, but "Drinking and Guns" (not trying to rag on you DG) sounds like a "don't do this" rather than a "check out this news story." Either that or an experience you had at Harris park last weekend with some knuckle heads mixing alcohol and firearms.

If it's your average Federal Heights chick, the "22 years old" is probably the only attractive thing about her. Helps the discerning gentleman see past the extra 100 lbs, Hatchet Man tattoos, and stringy black-on-blonde hair.

You may be right, "The couple and their friends were socializing in the garage, where their Harley Davidson motorcycles are parked, Toldness said. Shane Adair works as a tattoo artist."

My first reaction was same as Kwandos. With all these noobs rushing out buying firearms I also expected to see this happening more often. What the hell? Drunk, loaded "clip", safety off, and round chambered? What else was a likely outcome. A ND that hit the neighbor in the head?

The Darwin quota is not being filled as well as it should be.

Stupidity is not tragic, nor excusable. The only positive I see in this, is that the stupid person died in place of an innocent person....that is when unexpected death is tragic.

Waste of a good AK in my opinion. It will probably be destroyed.

Damn straight.

Sad part is that it will be played to make gun owners to look bad.

Instead of looking at as thinning/culling the herd or pickenup's chlorination of the gene pool, the sheep/LIV will perceive it as tragic and more fodder for anti gunners.

I put this on so many guns being sold so quickly to people who have never handled a gun or had ANY training. She may have never bought it if the recent panic had not happened. This may be an ironic, unintended consequence of all the gun bans of recent history. It sounds like one of the "Got any AssHault Rifles I can buy" deals that I have dreading finding in the news. I hope this is not followed by too many more.

Quick facebook search yields her page, there are some pictures you can view and in one she is holding a pistol with excellent finger discipline (while squatting down posing for a pic with someone). There's no reason to suspect this wasn't a pure accident (and by that I mean negligent discharge).

They may have loaded the rifle for a HD gun but with it being a new gun, she may not have been used to the state it was in when she picked it up out of the closet. Then, do that with a firearm while you've got 6 or more beers/drinks in you and the first thing you think of is to rush out to show your friends your new "assault rifle", you forget the safety rules because people often treat unloaded weapons carelessly because they think they know its unloaded so they can point it at whatever they want.

KevDen2005

According to the article the "assault weapon" usually has 20 or 30 round "clips" and it was only about "half full." So if there were 15 rounds or less in this weapon, how could it have happened? My theory...at least 16 rounds were in the "clip."

I think its easier for some people to assume mistakes like this are only made by hatchet-tat meth-head ratchet moms from the hood rather than accept the fact that it could very well be ANYONE that allows themselves to be complacent for just a second.

As for the Age difference, what's the magic Number? There are 11 years between Mrs. Byte and I... are we just gross? is it Ten years, Maybe it's Five? Maybe any difference more than 6 months should be regulated by the States perversion laws...

Yes, booze and guns should NEVER be mixed.
But she was 22 years old, and her husband caught her as she fell. She likely died in his arms.

I missed all the edited whoop laa.... but it was stated very well I thought.......NEVER hand a loaded weapon to someone or SHOW a loaded weapon to someone. I take a little exception with the never drink while shooting program, my personal opinion on that. Doesn't matter if I have a little buzz on, I still know what I'm holding in my hand and what it is capable of doing.

I don't want to sound insensitive with my stupidity comment yesterday, though, I still won't call it tragic....it is very sad that it happened and I'm sorry that guy and her family are having to deal with that situation.

The "AK for the 7th anny" comment did crack me up though.
