Zoning restrictions. I will leave the webpage up for a short while (until we finalize the details).

Well damn they got another one, the WHAC club off Bromely ln is forever closed.
This club was great you could practice anything you wanted and I suspect it was the downfall also.
Short story is some dumb shit let a round go over the massive hill it appears and struck a house which caused an investigation that ended up closing the range.
Looks like ill be getting a refund as i just renewed my dues in April, that's the bright side of this.

Well hell I guess I need a new hobby, time to sell all my guns and ammo. (yes this is sarcasm)

Several decades ago, when the old Wes Thompson's Rifle Range was out near Newhall in California, a nearby homeowner went to the County Supervisors and demanded it be closed. He brought with him a .45 ACP slug he claimed to find on his roof.

A pristine, beautiful, never fired, no rifling .45 ACP slug ...

I wonder if I move out by DIA and bitch about the noise if I can get that to shut down too. People have nothing better to do then bitch about what other people enjoy. Thanks to Cy and Juan for all your hard work. I have really enjoyed shooting at whac with all the great people for the last 5 years. Hopefully something changes and we can get our range back.

I was a member there, and consider the operators to be friends, so I was sad to get the e-mail as well.

Colorado Rifle Club (www.crci.org) does currently have open membership. We don't have .22Dogs, but pretty much the rest of what WHAC had. If there are enough people who want to shoot .22Dogs, we can make that happen at CRC once the new berms are complete. Cy, feel free to drop me a note or give me a call if you want to keep on doing it.

WHAC is less than 30mins for me and CRC would be 1.5 hours. An extra hour drive time is tough, I wish there were something closer near the WHAC. Though, I'm sure the same whiners would throw a fit anyways.

Yep I feel the same way, with the wife and kids it is hard to go shooting and with an additional 3 hr's (round trip) I don't know how offten I would be able to make it out there.

The closing of any range is a sad event, but that being said, I've got a mini-rant that I need to get off my chest here regarding ranges in general.

As time goes on, I've been getting more frustrated with the available ranges and all of the rules, and after renewing my CRC membership earlier this year and re-reading the existing/updated range rules, decided that at least for me, going to the range just doesn't make sense anymore, particularly since the drive time to Pawnee/mountains is the same as the drive time to CRC (from thornton).

Now, I understand that we all want a safe experience and that's what the rules are there for, but excessive seems to be the name of the game lately, and it really comes down to this: If I want to do some (very) basic paper/steel punching (completely stationary), the range (any range) is good. Otherwise, no-joy. Tactical shooting drills/shooting & moving/rapid draw/unorthodox techniques - all forbidden....I get the no tracer due to fire hazard issue, but when the rules explicitly prohibit drawing from holster, having any type of movement involved, unothodox firing techniques, etc., then what the hell is the point? Particularly when you factor in the dues and other costs....

MarkCO
05-22-2013, 13:56
DireWolf, in direct response, there are prohibitions because people are idiots, even some shooters.

That said, I am almost done with a "check-out" for CRC that will allow members to demonstrate competence and responsibility and then be allowed more freedom on the East ranges. Basically, if you can be safe, underatand safe target presentations and have another person who can get help in the worst case situation, you will be cleared.

Mark,

That would be fantastic. I agree that you have to plan around the least-common-denominator of idiot, but the idea of getting pre-cleared to practice more advanced techniques without having to worry about getting blacklisted from the range is a very welcome thought...particuarly since one of the things I really like about the east range is the protection from the potential idiot one stall/position over.

Please let me know when that program becomes available...

P.S. - Sorry for the mini-hijacking of this thread.....

How about that I've been a member for two years and an active IDPA shooter? Fuck, I'll put a chain on my 8th place plaque from states last year.

Good thing the range is nearly empty, all the time.

If they're going to make such a drastic change to the rules, you'd think they'd let people know. Like in my membership renewal, or the website. I guess I'll continue to be oblivious.

Edit: Sorry, but I'm really fucking livid right now.

MarkCO

Edit: Sorry, but I'm really fucking livid right now.

Seriously, don't be. I did not like it, so I talked to them and others had as well. My draft is EASY for any who competes to get cleared. It is basic safety stuff. Once cleared, you will have freedom to practice and train. The BOD actually has it in their hands now and it should be a few weeks at most and we will be good to go.

I don't think they really had a choice. I am not going into what some morons did, but the pendulum swung a tad far the wrong way and it is going to get re-centered.

DireWolf
05-22-2013, 15:54
will there be a 2-person requirement as you had hinted at earlier? If so, I think that may be a bit counter-productive....As I had mentioned, I'm all for safety and whatnot, but am usually flying solo (as I would imagine many are), and if something bad were to happen, I can pretty much guarantee that even alone at the range, help would be a lot more likely to find me than out in the middle-of-nowhere places that I usually find myself...

For long-gun, most likely yes. For pistol...not sure yet.

Clear Creek Sportsman's Club and Ben Lomond Gun Club do not have excessive restrictions. Maybe those clubs would be a better option for some people who prefer to do dynamic shooting? Granted, neither of these clubs are close to anyone in the northern Denver area, but you can at least practice the way you want to. I am a member at both of these ranges for this exact reason. It may take me a while to drive there, but when I get there I can practice whatever I want to. Obviously safety is paramount and I wouldn't have a problem going through a safety class or review to prove that I can practice the way I want to safely.

When I last checked Clear Creek wasn't accepting any more non-residents. You have to be a resident of Clear Creek County to apply.

I wasn't sure about Ramah. I know CRC is still accepting members, but who knows for how much longer?

I know there is still membership available at Ben Lomond. It was really close to capacity the last club meeting I went to though. With all of the crazy gun buying going on right now every single range has had a surge in membership applications.

Clear Creek being a multi year wait to get in is nothing new. I had to wait 2 years myself to get in and I have been a member for over three years now. Put your name on the list now so the clock starts ticking now.

Sorry guys I've been buisy but here's the story. Me and my brother go down to whac to shoot but when we get there there's a fucking white expedition parked in front of the gate so we went through the side gate. When we get there there was one shooter that had his chrono set up and a couple of long range sticks and there are two jerk offs harrasing him saying he's not allowed to shoot here anymore and this is when we walk up and I get the story and they claim they have a bullet that went through there kitchen window and they just bought the house. So I tell them they are tresspassing and as they leave they say if they hear another shot they will call the sheriff. So the first thing I did was call Cy and he gets there in 5 mins and he was pissed and says go ahead a start shooting and he stayed for a couple of hours just incase the sheriff came or the complainer (never did). Also my brother was looking at the house that we are guessing this douche bag bought and it is not even behind the range it is pretty much behind the oil well that is to the right of the range about 1.5 miles away so I find it verry hard to believe that one of our bullets found is way there

Did anyone ever produce the spent bullet?

I know this is now a county issue, and the Adams County Sheriff is not particularly helpful, but it would seem to be a matter of evidence. The homeowner has it and gave it to the SO, or the SO couldn't find any evidence. To point at a broken window and claim that an errant bullet travelled more than a mile, over a hill, and found their house without producing the bullet stretches the imagination.

I am sorry to say that WHAC is currently closed. We have continued to fight this zoning restriction with the Adams County Planning Commission but, as anyone who has had to deal with any government agency knows, things in their world move slooooowwwwwwly. We have also been instructed by our lawyer to not discuss the details of the process which we are going through on a public forum (we wouldn't want to give the opposition any information that could be used against our efforts) so, for this reason, I haven't posted much on this thread.

We are hoping to reach an agreement with them in the future but I don't expect it to happen any time soon.

We have had a lot of communication with different folks within the county offices. Most of their answers have been the predictably non-committal "I would love to help because I am pro-gun but it's not up to me" BS.
