For pistols I prefer fiber with an orange up front and two greens in the rear. My M&P40c only has it painted that way as of now. For rifles, a good scope, and shotguns just the beads

Pistol - Night sight for the front, blacked out rear.
Rifle - Depends on the rifle. Aimpoint H-1 on the AR, glass on my bolt guns, and just plain old irons on mixture of other rifles.
Shotgun- Fiber optic bead for hunting or clays.
