I have been thinking about getting a new mountain bike for a little while now. I still have the bike I bought in 1991 or 1992. Although it looks ok it needs the shifters replaced and grips but that means changing the bars and maybe the neck. I don't need a $1000 mountain bike. Anybody know which are good in the $300-500 range?

I've always had great luck with mid to low grade Treks. My last bike was the Trek 3700 and I loved it! I'm also in the market for a new bike, because I sold my last one for gun stuff lol. My next bike will more than likely be another trek.

Specialized has a good range of pricing. I wouldn't expect much from a $300-$500 bike though.

Scratch that, mine was the 4300, either way, trek is gtg in my book.

Do your research, then check Craigslist for the bike you want...lots of good bikes there, cheap too.

I'd definitely recommend used. You could probably get a pretty nice used bike in that range.

I'd also check to Bicycle Experience on the South end of town (Tejon & Navajo). I was only in there once, but drive by it daily. They have a ton of used bikes; can't speak to the quality, but it's worth checking out.

I would take that money and upgrade your current bike.

You can upgrade quite a lot of it for that price and if the frame is solid I don't see how you can go wrong. If you're just looking for something prettier then paint it too.

My buddy (also a member here) has a Trek he has been talking about getting rid of. I will be at his place tomorrow and will find out what model it is. It's hardly ridden at all, just sits there.

Love my Cannondale f5

Yea... There are some great deals on Craigslist. But they go fast, you have to be active hunting them and know what you are looking at.

Call great divide in pueblo they have acces to a bunch of last year model trek 6000 series i picked my son up one a month or so ago, they are $1000.00+ bikes they sold me his for 725.00 out the door tax and all, and it only took them 3 days to get it. It's a little more than you want to spend but they have some great parts on them its well worth 700 bucks.

Craigslist.

There are tons of bike weenies in this state and a goodly number of them have to swap up to the latest/greatest every six months or their spandex automatically gets in a knot. A neighbor of mine has scored some great bikes (road and mountain) on Craigslist for a fraction of what they retailed for 12-24 months earlier.

Get a 2012 GT Avalanche 3.0 on clearance from Performance Bicycle. A little heavy but one of the best low money bikes you can get.

The GT Avalanche series is a solid lower end bike. Or check Craigslist if you know what to look for on used bikes.

For that price range I would go with a close out like this Raleigh from Bicycle Village. If they have your size. Craigs List can be a real crap shoot unless you are an expert on bikes, used bikes etc. Main thing
in this price range is the marginal front shock, a cheap Suntour. This 2011 is a great value for the $$. Plus they transfer bikes to other stores more in your neighborhood. The 2014 bikes start hitting the stores
now in August/September and many shops will dump their 2013 models. Buying new gets you a warranty and some free tune ups also. Worth it in long run.

Keep us posted!

I talked to him and he said he may keep it. I will be over there Tuesday and talk to him a little further. (he was out of town this weekend). I will place emphasis on the fact he hasn't put his ass on the bike in at least 3 yrs....

I will sell you a $3000+ Turner 5-Spot for $1K. (If at some point you realize you need a REAL mtb) [Beer]

It is used, but still has a lot left in the tank. New rear and long travel rockers.
