I can only guess, based on extreme price difference, that not all bolt cutters are equal in quality. If anyone can shed some light on which ones are quality and which are junk, I'd be grateful. Use might entail proof coil 5/8" chain down to chain-link fencing.

I know people bag on Harbor Freight tools. But I've had good luck on their bolt cutters. Chain-link fence no problem. For bigger stuff Home Depot has some good ones / bigger ones for $60 - $80.

I've cut through plenty of crap with the ones in our dynamic entry kit, some of it was pretty tough stuff. They're expensive though.

It says non-case hardened locks on their website, but I've definitely cut through ones that said case hardened on them. Including the one on my locker when I lost my key.

I have a Klien set that is super. I never leave home without them. Harbor Freight are fine for infrequent use. If you are buying them for work buy American. Funny the BoltMasters are a restricted tool. Only for LEO and such.

I've always preferred to pick locks rather than cut them off, but Snap-on offers a pretty good set in their Bluepoint line.
