View Full Version : ? about manufacturing a FA Class 3 weapon
I'm trying to sell a pre 1982 AR-15 on Armslist. I was contacted by some who says he has a trust and with the right qualifications he can convert it to FA I'm assuming. From what I can tell only SOT's can do this and only deal with law enforcement and other SOT's correct? But why would a SOT's need a pre 84 weapon to do this? Couldn't they just build and machine one from a new lower?
Of course this guy is not sure how we would do and internet sale so I have serious doubt that he knows much about Class 3 stuff.
My biggest concern is I sell it to him and he converts it, then gets caught and says he bought it this way from me. I guess this could be covered with a bill of sale correct?
Unless he is paying a premium price for your rifle I think I would just deal with someone else.
Just to be safe.
Sorry I have no answer to your actual question.

There's this thing called documentation, which your back and forth e-mails will verify your gun is a factory Unmodified Semi-auto, prior to him taking possession. His throwing a Trust in to the mix means nothing. He needs to be a SOT / Title II ? FFL to convert any firearm to select fire unit, or have a pre -86 done for him. Which may be probably his intention. Having a converted pre-86 is nice BUT what i'm reading in your post, has too many alarm's going off.
I received an inquiry similar to your's a few years back and informed the "interested buyer" What he was thinking of doing would be better off done with some one, other then me.
The firearm must be registered as an Auto NFA firearm pre 86 to be transferable / non-LE non-MIL legal. Converting an old semi auto to auto is no different than converting a new gun to auto. It is still an auto that is to be registered after 86.
Smells fishy to me.

IIRC if he has a registered pre 86 "drop in" auto sear he can drop it into a "host".

And that would be fine but doesnt need a pre ban anything to install it in.

Correct it's the DIAS that has the stamp. Walk away,. the money you would realize will not cover your first attorney visit.
Thank you gentlemen that is pretty much the way I say this whole thing but I just wanted to make sure. My guess is when I told him that I needed to send the gun to an FFL for the transfer that I won't hear from him again.
