View Full Version : Raspberry Pi, Did you get a Slice?
OK so being in IT (sort of) I about lost all interest in newer technologies until this was developed;

So I ordered one with some extra breadboards, couple lcd screens and a couple daughter boards. I just got the os (Weezy) flashed to the SD card last night and will be picking up a cheap monitor on my way home tonight. I have tomorrow and this weekend off so I will be dorking it up in good fashion. From what I have been finding on the net it looks to be a good tinkering device to build into any number of projects.
Anyone else check these out yet?

Don't listen to them Mazin, their just mad they could never program their VCR's.
I have one and sitting in a box in the garage. My plan is to create a media server to connect to the onboard DVD player in my Jeep Commander. Idea is I could stream video from my iPhone or VNC to it from the iPhone and play stored kids movies from a static drive.
WHY
Well if you have an onboard DVD in your vehicle and the kids watch DVD's then your probably like my 2 hours in to a road trip wanting to drive off a cliff if you have to hear one more freaking song from the Lorax.

It's a mini/tiny/super small computer you build.
That whole things a computer? That's PFC.
Now I want real PIE!
Yep. I haven't had breakfast yet. Pie sounds good.
Yea it interested me when it was in development but I missed its initial release. I just got mine in Tuesday so I will be in nerd heaven this weekend. The OS I downloaded is just a version of Linux for the RPi but I plan on doing a complete build later on once I can get a little more fluent with my languages. For $35 base price I think I might be able to build some cheap learning PC's for my nieces and Nephews. The mobile media center is a good idea to keep the kiddos at bay while on a long road trip. I plan on messing with some motion sensors and the cams (when they come out) and maybe automate some things in the house so I can be even more of a nerd [Flower]
The whole thing reminded me of projects we use to build in digital electronics class in Hs so I'm really interested in trying some different things with it.

Same basic idea, competing brand. I think ras pi is a little more refined.

Similar concept, but the pi has an HDMI output and h.264 capable decoder hardware, so it's aimed at embedded video applications like being a media server, while arduino is just a modern and sleek take on a microcontroller.

If for some reason Roku starts screwing with me (for example if they dump Plex support because Plex allows YouTube support or because you can use Plex in some fashion they don't approve of) I plan on picking up a few Raspberry Pis and installing this (http://rasplex.com/) on them. Honestly if I'd RasPlex would have come out before I bought my Rokus I'd probably have gone that route instead.
On a side note, there's a lot of real cool cases for Raspberry Pis ... if I ever build something with one I want this case (http://www.adafruit.com/products/1036).

I'd love to have one just to be a DLNA server for TV, with a big USB drive on it. So I can rip all my DVDs to it and get my own private netflix!
I had never heard of these before this thread, but it has my brain working overtime right now!
I will definitely have to pick a few of these up for media servers on my home network. I also really like the idea of a car media server.
Wanna to really trick it out - 7" touch screen not just for car audio....

Dude I have to give you props on that shameless TP plug BRAVO!!!!
That is a great idea though. I will snap a few shots of the stuff I got in when I get inside.

Shameless yes, but would be an excellent addition. One of the reasons I originally bought it.
I still have a box inbound that has the daughter boards but this is what I got so far.

I really want one.
I've been messing around with a Netduino for a little while. I ran into an issue w/ my software design and the amount of memory that came with it (I was running a web-based app). I'd love an rpi that can actually run Apache!
Here I was hoping it was about a chick holding a freshly baked delicious pie and would offer other type of pie as well.

I got one, played with it a little but I need a case and a dedicated usb adapter for power because I need the one i have for my phone.

I have a extra one if you want it.
Our household picked up an intel NUC and we stuck an MSATA SSD in it. It's a smoking little box, but what to do with it...?
Thinking about adding a 23" touch screen and using it for surfing and media streamer in the garage.
Still need a network savvy streaming amp for running the patio speakers too. Any suggestions?
What are you guys doing with yours?

I used to build mini wireless exploitation devices with Beagle Boards. Been wanting to get a Pi for a while now, but haven't made the purchase as of yet!
Now I gotta get my nerd on and learn more about this neat little device.

lol we ordered $900 worth of them for work the other day. When they came in, the cleaning people at night threw the box away. Have them on camera doing it. So I haven't gotten to play with one yet.

Got three several months ago. One to just use as a Linux host, one to connect to my weather station and one to [hopefully not] fry with a breadboard.
FYI, out of the three cases I've bought for the Pis, I like these two the best so far: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1067 and http://www.adafruit.com/products/975 (just about indestructible and available in other colors).

I'm about to jump into the pie with the new Pi-4.
Any suggestions on documentation for newbies?
Nerd stuff:
In the late 1970s Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) introduced the VAX 11/780 (https://www.old-computers.com/history/detail.asp?n=20&t=3), probably the best "mainframe" at the time. Being the first of its line, its speed established the VAX Unit of Processing, or "VUP" of one.
In 1980 I started working for DEC here in the 'springs. We had a bunch of 11/780s - they and their peripherals were monstrosities, about four or five refrigerators side-by-side in size. The 11/780 consumed huge amounts of power, with thick power cables hanging down from 100+ amp bus bars running overhead.
Remember, 1 VUP.
In 2015 the Raspberry Pi foundation released the Raspberry PI Zero (https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/970x728/3400-01.jpg) - a tiny Pi about the size of two or three postage stamps.
Someone took a VAX instruction set emulator and put it on a Pi Zero, booted up VMS (the VAX operating system) and stuffed the Pi Zero inside a tiny VAX 11/780 MODEL (given out as a promotional item at DECUS, I believe).
Mind you, this thing can run on a 5 volt battery.
Its speed? Four VUP! Four VUP while EMULATING another computer's instruction set! My what a difference 39 years makes.
Info on this project can be found here (https://vxcompany.com/2016/02/13/a-working-vax-11780-revisited/).

Ps. Ok, for the nerds that are still with me, this jogged my memory on another piece of trivia...
The setup: In "2001 A Space Odyssey" the main protagonist was the "HAL 9000" computer. What three letter acronym do you get if you take the NEXT letter in the alphabet for each of the letters H-A-L?
The trivia: What many people don't know is one of the major designers of DEC's VMS operating system, Dave Cutler, left DEC to join Microsoft to work on a new operating system called "Windows New Technology" or "WNT" (the grandfather of what we call "Windows" today). Well, what acronym do you get if you take the PREVIOUS letter in the alphabet for each of the letters W-N-T?
I wrote a lot of lines of BASIC on a DEC PDP11/34...still have the paper tape saves somewhere...

I am special and can't geek out to that link above.
bradbn4, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
I have a few raspberry Pi - the first one I setup to be a print server (worked well) and tried the SAMBA to turn a drive into a network drive (worked, but to slow to use).
I started with the PDP 11/70, got a PDP 8 for school for free......I have poked at one of the VAX super computers once.
I have one of each of the RB Pi 4.0 in each memory configuration.
It's probably heat because that link is seven years old.

That's a great post, O2. I'm too young for VMS (and I am not young, lol) but do remember it, and certainly remember Windows NT. My first real experience with DEC was the DEC Alpha CPU, which was the first/only RISC CPU to run Windows NT (and VMS). I actually had two servers, Barney and Showboat, which were both DEC Alpha based NT Servers, for Exchange and Directory Services.
I grew up in the personal computer era, and every time someone came into my shop and started to show off with VAX/VMS, etc., I just smiled and nodded and, yeah, you go with your big iron. :)

Havent checked into what the pi4 can do yet but the three you could do up to supposedly n64 but it would run like crap. I had one on a 3 rolling NES,SNES,Sega genesis and turbo graffix 16 with about 1400 games (all i have hard copies for of course....before i sold them to an un named collector). Fun stuff and easy to setup, if you need any help just text me. [Beer]

I'll be taking you up on that when retropi4 comes out. Supposedly it's in beta right now and will possibly do up to dreamcast but gets a bit clunky, hopefully drivers will get better soon.
I'd actually be fine with the pi 3 b+ but why not go for a 4?
Also waiting on the new light gun that doesn't require a bar, the kickstarter is done and they're going to the public now. Time crisis has earned its last quarter from me!

4/3 pie are cubed.

Snipit from the retropi 4.5 website about RP #4.... This version does NOT work on the recently released Raspberry Pi 4. We are currently working on support for this.
