View Full Version : My first pistol match

... well, not necessarily a match... but a classifier.. well, sh*t!? Someone correct me on this.

I can't really say that I'm a competitive, tactical pistol kinda guy to start with. I could stand there and shoot paper and steel with my or others pistol (s) no problem all day and not really think about it, but maybe smirk and think to myself.. "cool, I hit it" [Coffee]

I jumped in this IDPA event thinking "ha! the worse that can happen is missing a few shots" no sweat. Boy... was I wrong!
Well let me start with how my day began.
I packed my sh*t early this morning (0500) excited about the whole thing of course. Got to the range and met up with a handful of board members on here. Cool.. cool... As the guys were setting up the courses I see a guy carrying an ammo box. I think to myself... Hhhmmm... walked to my car popped the trunk open and guess what I "DIDN'T" see? My f*cken ammo box! So I sped straight home and grabbed my sh*t which took me about 2 hours for the whole ride. Yea... stoopid.. I know.
Fine... I find the guys I'm shooting with.. cool.. cool... all smiles and laughs... Got my gear together, and I hear "You're up".... ohhhh shhhhh****t! I had to have the range officer repeat instructions at least 3 times before I shot, I was sweating like a whore in church (don't know if I did that right), my hands were shaking like... well, let me put it this way.... if I felt that nervous around a woman/women ("women" never that lucky)... lets just say I would've got the job done with just my hands.[ROFL1]
There were 3 stages.. and you know what? I f*cken suck! [LOL] I had 1 or 2 penalties, and 2 malfunctions [panic] oooowwweee did my panic meter spike or what?! It was even funnier on stage 2 (moving and shooting)... I was walking to my targets like a penguin [ROFL3]
So yes... I came there unprepared in all areas, I rushed a lot of my shots, and who knows how much stuff i could've done better... but you know what? That sh*t was freaken FUN!

the really cool part are the guys there.. especially the guys running the event.. aww man! they would actually come up and give you great tips, point out and suggest what could help out and basically make things more comfortable. I have learned a sh*t ton from this one event... and of course I had a blast!

100 rounds or so plus $20 is what I had to have participate in this event... and of course the required gear. There were guys there that were in their late 20's up to probably their 60's... so don't let age stop you or be an excuse to check one of these out. Just to throw this out there I was shooting with my FNP 45 Tactical.
I'm extremely tired from all the laughing and shooting... or shooting and laughing [ROFL1] I'm trying my best to make some sense with all of this.... but I would like to say, if you haven't tried any of these pistol matches... OOhh sh*t! You are missing out my friend!

Here's a pic taken of the 3rd stage. I would've taken more pics, but I was nervous as hell... so I paid more attention to how these stages were worked.

Welcome to the wonderful world of IDPA. I've been meaning to get out to Idaho Springs and get back into it. Ammo is the hold up right at the moment. I really enjoy the scenario side of IDPA, never was a big one for the "classifiers". They sure are fun though. By the looks of it, is that CRC? Have to keep my eye open for when the next one is, perhaps meet you out there. [Beer]

Yes.. the CRC... I'm on the same boat myself with ammo, but when I do have more... you bet your ass I'll be there again, and hopefully you too [Beer]

Damn high power and pistol you're really loosing your cherry this year ain't ya. Wait until you're 3-4 matches in to it. cruising through the course of fire, as you go for the next mag [facepalm]FORGOT to reload and still have an empty mag on your belt.

... yea.. popping the cherry did hurt a little [LOL]

Sh*t.. it was bad enough forgetting my ammo at home... I was supposed to have 3 rounds, but I had 1 to many which I got penalized for.... never did say I was good with numbers [ROFL1]

It was fun as hell though.. you all know I'll be wanting to do this one again soon too [Beer]

Jhood: I bet you can do those mag changes without looking at your mags.

For sure Brother.... and the award for the lowest points goes to... ME [Stooge][Beer]

Hell yeah! Jhood was working it out there... I think he was cheating though... He has one of those high speed, hands free, auto reloaders that shoots the magazine into his pistol [LOL] [Beer]

If the IDPA made you feel like a rookie, you should definitely try the USPSA stuff.

DON'T get him involved in another shooting sport. He's already pissing n moaning about components now.

The look on Mikes face was pretty funny. Introductions, shake hands, crack on him for forgetting ammo and call him to firing line. That "Who? Me?" look.

Mike did the best of our group on that last stage.

I bet I can sing really well in the shower, too! It is alot different actually being on stage. I've got a LOT of work to do.

Took a minute to recognize you with that Mtn man growth. When they do scenario stages, as madmike mentioned, your game goes up another notch or two.

Hey Mike! Thanks for being extremely patient with my slow (thought process) ass. Yah.. you saw it... I was having one heck of a time out there.. Thanks again! [Beer]

Honestly, don't. Get a good 3-5 matches under your belt and then consider alternatives. All trigger time is good time and there are so many forms of competition, one will certainly meet your tastes.

IDPA is certainly the cheapest of the action sports, but it is not the easiest. I just think it is cool to see new people get out to matches and then continue on. We have some top shooters here in CO that started with a CCW course and/or an IDPA match and are now winning higher level matches. The people are generally some of the best as well, but shooters do like to encourage new people to spend more and more on the hobby/obsession. :)

I'm the one that shot first in the last batch of the day that didnt seat my mag all the way and got the prosedurial for not doing a tac reload before moving to the barrel

I do plan on trying more of these out... heck, I'm even telling everyone at work (that I know that carries) that they need to check these events out.... good fun all around no doubt.
I certainly need more time behind the trigger.. geez... and that's just about with everything I own [Tooth] [Beer]

Yeah, you were the guinea pig there on the hardest stage. lol I swear I saw six guys do the same thing by not seating the mag properly on the tac reloads. I've never seen it happen so many times like that.

That almost happened to me as well, as that was my first time doing a tac reload. Very awkward to try and seat a mag while holding another mag at the same time.
