Got Moose?

Hanging out at the mountain cabin this weekend I took a walk to see if there was any recent deer, bear or moose signs in the yard. Sure enough, found lots of fresh moose droppings and tracks leading into the forest when I came upon a cow and calf. Followed them around a while as they were browsing on fir needles and aspen bark.

The cow was nonchalant but the calf was pretty wary. At one point they browsed within 30 feet of the cabin. The cow stands about 6 ft. 6 inches tall. Big critters.

I've watched elk eat aspen bark in fall and winter but never saw moose do it. It's a little surprising they are eating it now, but the sap flows sweet and wet in April & May. The bark peels easily now.

Gotta love them moose lips!

Again this year, I missed drawing a CO bull moose license, 13 years running. Oh well, it's fun just watching them.

How cool is it to have your own yard moose! Anybody else got moose?

Moose lips

We have a cow and calf around the house but I never see them.

I'm north of Ned about 17 miles, in Peaceful Valley. I've had moose visit the yard since 2008 but this is the first I've actually seen them on the property. My close neighbors see moose frequently but they are here more. I often do see moose along the road between PV and Nederland.

Geez these are great! Can't moose get aggressive, though?

For the hunters out there, what's moose meat like? How much of the animal can be processed for food compared to a typical deer?

Great pics! I was fortunate back in 2007 and drew my Colorado moose tag. Once in a life time hunt.

We have them near our place as well (off of S. Beaver Creek) but not actually on the property yet. My bud off of Gap Road had one hanging in his yard for a few days this winter. Awesome animals.

Moose are definitely not to be fucked with, especially cows with young. More people killed in Alaska every year by moose than bears. I'd love to hunt them some day though. +1 for the request on moose meat details.

Moose meat is great. Less of a game taste then elk or deer and very lean. Unlike elk meat that can taste very gamey during the rut, only the neck meat of a moose gets tough and gamey, packing all that bone has a lot to do with the toughness as well. Dad and I brought back 1000 lbs of meat between 2 Alaskan moose and that was after loosing 400 lbs to bone rot (we were pretty pissed at the outfitter for that one).

Awesome pictures! I Was once told That Aspen bark has properties similar to aspirin???

I knew that willow bark ( a primary food for moose) has salicylic acid which aspirin is derived from. Willow bark tea or even chewing on willow has been used for thousands of years for many uses including pain relief. Interesting that aspen also contains salicin and populin which have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and sedative properties. Google 'aspen bark, salicylic'.

I guess if a moose gets a moose sized hangover from eating too many fermented juniper berries, they only have to chew on willow and aspen bark.
