View Full Version : An unfortunate prediction for opening night of "The Purge"

I am not going to put it to words, exactly, but there is no way I am going to go see this movie on opening night, weekend, or possibly even week. I am also actively advising my friends and family that are avid, some times rabid movie goers, to skip this one for a few days.
It looks interesting, but given all of the other shit going on this is an invitation for very very bad things.
shit looks crazy! we will be there opening night......ccw of course
what are you talking about ?" the purge "? got a link for a trailer or something ? sounds like a sequel to" the grudge " maybe ?

Premise is, one night a year anything is legal and LE stays home... 12 hours of complete anarchy so that the rest of the year is crime free.

Thats funny.... +1... Had not even known of this movie..
Meh. You would have more luck getting both, bit by a shark and being struck by lightning, then being involved in a mass shooting in your life time.

Meh. You would have more luck getting both, bit by a shark and being struck by lightning, then being involved in a mass shooting in your life time.
And I plan to keep it that way.
I'd be interested in seeing it but as I've done with almost all movies the past 4-5 years, I'll just wait on it to come out on DVD so it's in a local RedBox, and watch it at home for a buck 30.
anyone who goes to see it, let us know what you think but please no spoilers.

I rarely go to the movies and when I do its not like on opening night. This movie does look crazy though.

Never go out to the movies anymore and worrying about a shooting are low on my list of reasons. I think I'll get on DVD, however. I wonder if I can get any bunker ideas out of it? From what I saw in the trailer, I would be picking them fukers off from my roof.

From the trailer, things are great until a teenager makes a terrible decision and opens the door. Dan kids.

I'll wait it out and see it at home...if at all.
I'm looking forward to "remnants" the movie more than "the purge".... http://www.remnants-movie.com/

I think it looks dumb.
I'll wait for it on Blu-Ray.

Looks like something that you get out of the $1 bin at Wal-Mart... or see on the last page of movies listed on Netflix... [LOL]

After 30 years of Halloween and Friday the 13th movies, you'd think teenagers would know not to open the door when they're "partying" as an isolated group ...

I will wait for it to hit VHS.

It used to happen a lot in Colorado circa the 1800's. It was called a lynching!

Can't really see myself going to see another Hollywood movie that glorifies violence just to make a buck. I would be willing to bet that there is as much character and plot development as a pornographic movie has. I might watch it when it comes out on cable which should be sometime in the 90 to 120 days if not sooner.
Pretty sure there was an actual paper/proposal written about this very concept within the last 50 year's or so.

Yeah, I think I'll wait for netflix. Looks somewhat interesting, though.

somewhere there's an analogy for obummer & crew being legit/legal for 2 months out of every 48mo so he can get (re)elected, but that's probably too soon to bring up in polite company. (and the joke is he still wasn't legit/legal for those 2 so I want my ticket money back).

and you can cut your odds of those in half by not swimming with sharks.
In other words, if you aren't there, it can't happen to you.

I go and see movies at old man times like 11:30 in the morning on a Saturday. Theater is always dead.

Who needs the movie: isn't that the premise behind legalizing pot?

I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby, Iron Man 3, Oblivion, and Fast and Furious 6 all on opening weekend. So far I'm 0 for 5 in the mass shooting department. I think you'll be okay, OP.
I went to Great Gatsby on opening night in the hopes a lonely rich man would shower me with riches!
Also, I don't think mass shooting was the fear of the OP. Just violence in general. Remember when The Fast and The Furious came out and ricers were wrecking their cars all over the parking lots?

I saw this type of premise in an episode of Star Trek (TOS) over 40 years ago; The Return of the Archons (1967)

There is a little genuine concern and a little tinfoil hat involved. I see this as a movie that could easily be the target of an agenda of sorts especially since there have been enough failures on GC recently that it needs a boost. OR It is something that someone will emulate etc.
Largely I don't do opening nights anymore, because I have grown less and less fond of crowds and confined spaces. Also, there have been a few to many folks playing with bombs of late for my liking.
While an active shooter scenario isn't something I want to get involved in, I have been present for two already in my lifetime. The second one I was out with my wife, and at the time did not have my CCW nor had I even thought I would ever need more than my edc knife. That was a game changer, especially when the only thing between us and the shooter were about 5 feet of air and a 30" wide brick pillar.
My concern is solely based on the climate, the content of the movie, and of all the movies out there that someone might emulate in a parking lot or in the theater itself, this one has the most potential to draw in that element. How many Italian tough guys thought they were Rocky in the 80's and got the shit stomped out of them for their stupidity?
Also odds of getting hit by lightning 1/10,000 , odds of getting bit by a shark 1/300,000 (In the United States) ...odds for getting killed are way lower

Yup, I see this as a fairly gratuitous excuse for another violent movie. The premise is really flawed tho, and anyone who believes bad people would just get lawlessness and violence out of their system in one night are dreaming. This is one of silliest ideas I've ever heard...

Maybe their premise is not getting it out of their system, but instead, purging the community of the criminal element, as in vigilantism...

This is what I thought when I first read about the film earlier this year. Still, a silly idea in and of itself.

Yes, but many silly ideas have turned into Hollywood blockbusters. Not saying this will be one by a long-shot. Still will probably rent it when it hits red box.
Your wife should totally carry.. .I've seen her with a nerf gun. Stone. Cold. Killer.

I know what you're saying... "Okay, okay, we got this idea for a movie- this is great, so an asteroid/comet is headed toward earth, and it will kill everyone, so we're gonna send a space ship up to the asteroid/comet, drill into it, plant a bomb, and have it blow up and miss earth. Pretty neat huh?" And they did this twice!
Yes, but many silly ideas have turned into Hollywood blockbusters. Not saying this will be one by a long-shot. Still will probably download it when it hits Pirate Bay.
