I am sorry if I missed this, but I could not find any information in any of the posts.

Does anyone have or recommend an encryption software to securely store documents (Microsoft Word, Excel, PDFs, etc.) on a thumb drive or portable external hard drive?

Thanks

Truecrypt is what you want. I run it on Mac, PCM, and Linux without any problems.

I use pgp/gpg. check out this site for more info http://gnupg.org/

I also use this with various email clients for secure email exchanges. If you are really serious, you also need to employ a good secure delet tool such as bleach bit or the secure remove command. It does not do any good to encrypt a file if the unencrypted version can be undeleted.

Another vote for TrueCrypt - http://www.truecrypt.org/

Very easy to use.

I met Phil Zimmerman, the originator of PGP at a training session almost 20 years ago. He was trying to persuade a group of us that he didn't feel guilty about providing software which allowed child pornographers to secure evidence and protect them from prosecution. Encryption is like most tools... it can be used for good or bad, depending on the intentions of the user.

True Crypt without question.
