My neighbor has a couple of very cool items we'd like to do some research on.

First one is a Savage model 40 in .30-06 Springfield. Should we post the serial number in the thread? Its only 5 digits which seems pretty old in my opinion.

Second one is a Smith & Wesson .38 Special 'CTG' revolver. 5" barrel, same question on the serial number. Six digits on that one.

These were inheritance obtained, and unfortunately little to no additional info came with them. Any help or a direction on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Stay warm and thanks in advance.

did you do a google search ?

an email or letter to the mfg could net you all kinds of info, espcecially date of manufacture and quantity mfg'd.

Badger I can't help much on the Savage but I do like the S&W revovlers. If you send me some info on it or post the info here I will see what I can find out for you.

Model number if it is newer than 1957 will be on the frame behind the crane. Marking would be like something like this: 19-3, 15-4, 17 etc may or may not have a dash.

Serial number if older than 1957 will be on the butt, if the gun is newer the serial number could be on the frame behind the crane or in some cases still on the butt. Many serial numbers have a letter prefix. The letter isn't always next to the numbers. Posting the whole serial number isn't necessary you can post something like this S 456xx.

Exact caliber marking from the barrel.

High polish or matt finish.

Type of grips, do they have a diamond in the center, silver or gold S&W disc on grip.

I'm going hunting for a few days so I may not be able to get back to you until next week.
