Neighbors have released the name of the suspect in a horrific crime Sunday morning on the south side of South Bend at the Irish Hills Apartments complex. It started around 5 a.m. when a frantic mother living at the complex called police saying her husband was stabbing their 6-year-old daughter.
Before it ended, the little girl was dead and police had shot and killed Edward Mwaura.
It was a sound of terror that some Irish Hills Apartment residents awoke to Sunday morning
“I heard them screaming from my apartment and I live up the ways a little bit,” said Angela.
Police say the screams came from a bloody family fight in one apartment unit involving Mwaura, the mother and a young 6-year-old girl. When officers rushed in, there was a large amount of blood in the hallway and on the walls. Ultimately the mother had fled and was outside waiting for police
“The officers arrived to find a female victim bloodied in the parking lot, she confirmed that her 6-year-old daughter, was inside the apartment with her husband,” said Lt. Dave Wells with Metro Homicide.
And it was what was still inside that violent scene in the apartment that was so disturbing – and so deadly. Police kicked in the door to try and get to the girl to save her.
“Officers found the suspect, an adult male, on top of the juvenile stabbing her repeatedly about her body,” said Wells. “To stop the attack, one officer fired his issued weapon, hitting the suspect.”
Mwaura, the father of the girl, died at the scene.
His 6-year-old daughter was rushed to Memorial Hospital, but it wasn't enough to save her. She died from the stabbing.
The mother was also cut and stabbed in the attack. She was treated and released at Memorial.
WSBT spoke with several people at the complex who told us that the family involved had moved to the area, from Kenya about two years ago.
Police confirm that the family is from Africa, and they acknowledged a language barrier was a factor today.
And one fellow Kenyan who lives at the apartment complex says he was aware the family had been having problems lately.
When the Metro Homicide commander, police chief and prosecutor met with the media today, they couldn't help but mention how today's violent "father on child crime" was reminiscent of the Tramelle Sturgis case.
That brutal crime played out in South Bend in the fall of 2011 when a father, Terry Sturgis, beat, burned and tortured his 10-year-old son to the point that Tramelle died.
Today's violent killing of a child by a father was described by the Metro Homicide commander at the scene as a barbaric, animalistic act, which makes the investigation just that much more challenging.
The Metro Homicide commander says even though the suspect in this case was killed, investigators are still going at it the same way they would as if they had to take the evidence to court.
The young victim was school-aged. Neighbors at Irish hills have identified her as Shirley Mundia.
The director of education at Veritas Academy confirms that Shirley was a kindergartner at the school. And said she was one of the nicest little girls you'd ever want to meet.
Classes at Veritas just got out for the summer last Friday.
