View Full Version : Newbie Looking for Place to Shoot

I am new to these forums and was wondering where I can find a nice place to shoot. When I used to live here (I just moved back to the area) me and a friend would go to Cherry Creek Reservoir; however, I am not too thrilled about going there now.

Is there any place within a reasonable distance from the Denver Metro area without having to deal with meth heads/idiots/wannabe-gangbangers and the like creating an unsafe environment.

I would prefer some place free and a 200 yard range for shooting.

Thanks!

There's nice places, but you'll probably have to pay for a membership at a private club/range to avoid the knotheads. And nothing really "close" that I know of. There's a nice public range on US40 ran by the Div. of Parks and Wildlife, but it's damn near to Kremmling , between Hot Sulphur Springs and Parschall, and requires a Habitat Stamp. It's free and ungated, but no facilities and gas will eat you alive.

I personally am a member of www.blgc.org (http://www.blgc.org) and highly recommend it. But again, not "close". Great place though.

Reasonable driving distance, free and 200 yards ARE mutually exclusive at this point. If you want to be safe too...no dice.

Colorado Rifle Club is literally the closest open membership range to Denver. About an hour drive east near Byers.

Okay doesn't have to be free but reasonable as far as cost goes.

Also, how is Colorado Rifle Club? I checked out their website it looks decent, have you been there before? On the other hand, it's very far out there I might as well be in Kansas!![Cry]

Checked out www.blgc.org (http://www.blgc.org) it looks good too, what are the membership requirments/fees?

The other place you suggested is a little out of the question it's about 2 hours from my home!!

I am there on average once a week. Membership is about $100 or so. It is probably the best facility overall in Colorado with lots of land and lots of ranges.

Are there any requirements for membership?

One thing I noticed is that "quick draw" is not allowed so this means I am not allowed to practice any pistol drills?

Facilities vs location vs cost, CRC is your best bet. Great place and lots of activities besides just punching paper.

BLGC's requirements should be on the website. But there's no RO's except during events, and you can do any kind of shooting you want except artillery. Just clean up your mess and use common sense.

No officially scheduled RO's. There are many members that are RO's that are frequently at the range, and everyone I know is always on the lookout for safety issues regardless. I was supposed to get an RO badge but Dan kinda dropped the ball on that. :D

I actually prefer a more laissez-faire approach at a range BUT the people at the range have to be competent, courteous, and clean up after themselves for me to feel comfortable.

BLGC sounds like my style. Rondog, has there ever been any problems with anyone at the range?

I have no idea about any problem folks. Never seen any, but I don't get to go out there that often. Someone may stop by where you are to say hi, maybe discretely look to see if you're being safe, have eye/ear protection, no booze, BS a little, and then leave you alone. It's not hard at all to have a pistol or rifle range to yourself for most of the day, if not all day, it's seldom crowded. The exception might be the High Power range, which has maybe a dozen benches and target lines from 100 to 600 yards. The smaller pistol ranges, you can usually have to yourself.

It's 560 acres of club owned land, and all the ranchers/landowners all around are life members, so no bitching neighbors. There's portajohns and trash cans everywhere, a clubhouse with a relaxation area, big kitchen, bathrooms with lavatories and showers that are always unlocked, RV parking with hookups, picnic and camping area, 11 individual bermed ranges - 2 are 100yd. rifle, one 50 yd., the rest are handgun. There's a 500 yd. range for lead bullet rifles only, like blackpowder or cowboy. There's a shotgunning area, and archery area, a .22 silhouette range, and I think 6 new special use/competition pistol ranges.

And it's waaaay the hell out in East Jesus, and that alone deters most riff-raff from going out - they can't afford that much gas. Drive east from Castle Rock until you say "Jesus, where are we?", and East Jesus is farther east from there.

Rondog, you are right I looked on Google Earth.

How pasable is the road?--Looking at the road via Google, it looks a bit rough. I have a sports car and I don't want to ford a river to get to the range (sarcasm).

Thanks by the way

Drive till your butt hurts, then it's 19 more miles.

Gravel/dirt roads once you get off 86. No problem for cars, lotsa members drive low cars out there. Not so good for the paint.

5 miles of dirt road but it ain't no thang. Roads at the range can be gummy when wet, might keep that in mind. Only real negative is wind and heat, but you'll get that anywhere. Never had a bug problem I can recall, other places I've been were awful.

Oh! Check the website, I think there's usually an Open House weekend every year, might be soon if they're having one again.
