Gotta get em used to it early, I guess....
(MERCURY NEWS) (http://redflagnews.com/headlines/california-elementary-school-holds-toy-gun-buyback) — An elementary school will hold a toy gun exchange Saturday, offering students a book and a chance to win a bicycle if they turn in their play weapons.
Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill maintains that children who play with toy guns may not take real guns seriously.
“Playing with toys guns, saying ‘I’m going to shoot you,’ desensitizes them, so as they get older, it’s easier for them to use a real gun,” Hill said.
At Saturday’s event, called Strobridge Elementary Safety Day, a Hayward police officer will demonstrate bicycle and gun safety, and the Alameda County Fire Department is sending a rig and crew to talk about fire safety.

For all the pics of soldiers with guns I drew in elementary school I'd be put on 10 kind of drugs.
Soon, the mere word will be banned and referred to simply as the "G" word much like other words that only get a single letter now.
Mike Rosen had a guest on the other day, a Clemson University professor, whose stated goal is to abolish government schools in the USA. Skip the charter school and school voucher options and move straight on to free market education. Stories like this one make me wonder why we allow the government to indoctrinate our children.
Public school implies that the school is run by and for the benefit of the public. Make no mistake, they are government schools. The most useful purpose they serve is daycare.

Maybe I'll save all the broken nerf guns sitting here for a worthwhile cause, I could win a bike. Hope it's an OCC chopper bike.

I have to agree! Hence my son is home schooled..........

Good for you! I was homeschooled, and received a fantastic education. Was reading/writing by 3, reading on a college level by 10, and consistently was ahead of my peers in mathematics of all flavors. I don't think it was anything inherent, nearly as much as the focused, 1:1 instruction and dedication from my parents. Life has been much easier for it... keep up the good work!
Plus, there's the whole lack of liberal brainwashing thing....

Un-fucking-believable.
UM....are they holding the event on school property? Isnt that against the law much less the school rules?
I never had toy guns growing up. I had a stick and an imagination.
My school mascot was Yosemite Sam, complete with 2 pistols....drawn. When I was in junior high, there was a big effort by the high school principal to replace the pistols with a book and ruler. Thankfully, the community members persuaded the school board not to change it.
Next they will tell the kids to turn mommy and daddy in for speaking bad against the .gov..
Sounds 1939ish doesn't it??...
The Clemson professor I referenced above is C. Bradley Thompson. Here is an article he wrote about government schools and school shootings. He wrote this in 2005, and I think it is a thought provoking article.

Homeschooling is the way to go, puts you on a list of "Right wing Crazies" though.

frickin' laughable, really just unbelievable. Those toy squirt guns off the streets and out of the hands of those kids, what a difference that'll make.[facepalm]

And yet movies/tv continue to get more violent, mental healthcare cuts deepen every year, and social networking continues to chip away at the ability to genuinely interact with someone.
Certainly, if someone was engulfed in flames, the immediate necessity is to take away their matches...
Sigh....

More so....make matches illegal. Way too dangerous for civilians to have access to.

HERE (http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/lapd-hold-downtown-counterterrorism-drill-19340007#.UbU1fWQ4WIU) you have the LAPD demonstrating that violence does solve problems in front of a very large crowd. Do they really think kids will not try to emulate this behavior? Not even a movie or tv show, but live action with gunfire and everything, what kid wouldn't think this is cool.
Quick note - This exercise was done on same street as the shootout scene from Heat
Edit - Videos HERE (http://patdollard.com/2013/06/watch-creepy-raw-video-massive-counterterrorism-drill-makes-downtown-la-look-like-urban-war-zone/)
I blame Bruce Willis, Thomas Jefferson, and Mattell equally for my rabid devotion to guns..... :-)
Yeah they turn in nerf guns then play call of duty and the like by late elementary or middle school and they have every "assault weapon" memorized.

Yep... we're going down the same path...

Next will be violent video games- you know, because those are proven to desensitize us.
