So, this is what happened to me at the store earlier today... I was in the check out line at Safeway, and this little Mexican child starts speaking Spanish to me... I don't understand him at all. This old lady turns to me and says: "It's ok, he didn't say anything bad, maybe one day you should learn Spanish, and then she turned around". I was stunned at first, and was trying to come up with something better than "go back across the border" or something, but before I could come up with anything, this old guy behind me stepped out from behind and told her: "Your in (and I swear he said it) Merica! Why don't you learn you kids some damn English so he can communicate!" I had to have had a giant ass grin on my face at that point, anyway, I turned around, told the guy thanks, and checked out. It was great.

PROVIDING they understand AND can converse in the language of the country, they have decided to settle in.

CRAZIEST THING is : for as much Mexico wants an open border policy with America. You go to Mexico's southern border AND they have it heavily patrolled by mexican troops!. ANY person caught illegally entering mexico gets detained. THEN when they have a bus load off they go, under armed guard back across the border.

Yep- you should see all the stuff Mexico does to dissuade illegal immigration... Can't own a business, different property rights (even if it is a temporary residence- ie: vacation home), voting, etc. Mexico, for all their faults, has a pretty good immigration policy. Although, when it comes to border security, I think we can take a lesson from Israel... and some nations (IIRC Sudan) shoot people who illegally cross the border.

Liberal = Tossed Salad

I was told that Melting Pot is a racist term because it fails to recognize the different races. It also discourages "Racial Identity". The different races can maintain the racial identity but still be part of the whole society in a 'Tossed Salad'. That's what I've been told and read anyway.

The Italian, Germans, Irish, and others, have all melted in while still keeping there culture's heritage. October Fest and St. Paddy's Day pop up in my mind as examples.

This is true, did you know New Mexico officially recognizes both English and Spanish. This goes waaay back to before NM was a state (with a large Spanish speaking majority).

Hate to be a debbie downer on your whole "USA no official language" theory, but that's entirely false. While there is no "official" law or document that states English as our official language- our Declaration, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Laws, public addresses by congress and POTUS, 99% of street signs, and most importantly our language spoken at UN, NATO, and G# Summits are all in what language? English. It is spoken by the vast and overwhelming majority in this nation, American English is an officially and globally recognized dialect (hence why I just used recognized instead of recognised), it is, for all intents and purposes the official language of these United States of America. Carry on.

De facto does not equal de jure.

Although, I still agree that English should be spoken.

And in order to get your citizenship (minus a few exceptions) you have to speak and read English--enough to pass the citizenship text.

I can attest to that, I see more ads in spanish where I live than in english. I was just in Sams the other day getting my new pair of glasses, and when I walked up to the counter, there was no one to be found, but a hispanic lady was sitting there. I asked her if there was someone helping her, or if she was just sitting and resting. She said a bunch of crazy shit super fast in spanish like she was yelling at me (if we were on the phone, I would have SWORN she was yelling at me, but her facial expression was of confusion). Then came out the "no inglis". The optical dept had to go find someone else in the store who spoke spanish because she didn't.

It would seriously be easier for me to learn spanish than to try and get by speaking english at times, which let me tell you, pisses me the hell off.

I did get spoiled in Germany.
I only know about 10 words in German, and survived there. There are lots of good Eng speakers there.
Airport and DB tend to have employees who are willing to help Eng speakers, if English speakers are polite to them.

This is where I'm at as well (sort of disagree on arrogant a-holes, though). I went to France in September and prior to that I spent over a year studying it through various methods. I can speak and read a little. Certainly enough to get by, and it was actually a lot of fun practicing in Provence. I am still working on it as it is fun and I'm getting better and hope to go back soon.
Laziness? Yeah. I spent my free time learning a language for a vacation. It just isn't the one YOU want me to learn. You [illegals] are moving to a country that speaks a different language and *I* am lazy for not accomodating by trying to learn Spanish? OK...

Here's the "truth hurts and I'll probably be called a racist" section: When I was in HS, I took 3 years of Spanish. I didn't care for it and cannot speak a word today. Our German teacher taught several other classes, but basically told all of us Spanish takers how dumb we were in a candid moment. His point: "Do you want to speak to those in power and with money, or do you want to speak with the masses, the [fill in your perjorative] Spanish speakers? What you all should be doing is taking German and Japanese or some sort of Scandinavian or Russian and/or Chinese." It was like a revelation (>20 years ago) and I never signed up for Spanish again. Could barely study it after that.

I guess that's the thought I'd give back to the OP as the retort to smart-ass grandma? No offense, but what exactly is this kid saying that I'm going to ever GAF about?
Yeah, Spanish speakers have massive buying power collectively, but if I need something for my own life, well.....[shrug]

Nothing irks me more than having people come and ask, "Espanol?" and then copping an attitude when I say no. I don't owe it to you to speak a foreign language in my country. My mother speaks three languages, and my father some six or seven, I believe (African immigrant). I never bothered to learn any additional languages and that was my prerogative. If you want my service and cooperation, it's your prerogative to learn the spoken language of this land.

I can't just march down to San Salvador and start getting irate or rude because no one there speaks English; why do they assume it's owed to them the other way around?
