View Full Version : Cutting/stippling a G17 grip to 19 size

I've heard of it being done... has anybody here actually done it? Got before and after pics?
I like the 19 better than the 17 because it fits my hands better, and this seems like it'd negate that issue. I have no problems with the extra barrel length... sure it'd be nice to have a shorter overall length, but I CC a full size 1911 with no real issues.
Anybody see any issues with going this route?

Instead of potentially ruining a gun, and certainly ruining the resale value, why not just sell the17 and get a 19?

Get a 19, that's the only advice I have to offer. In my opinion, unless you have monster paws, the 17 doesn't offer anything the 19 can't give you. Slightly longer barrel, and +2 capacity.
Yep. Just trade the 17 for a 19.
If you chop it it will be a hard sell later on if you decide to do so.
I stumbled across this earlier today.

There are other videos listed that may help.
I see nothing wrong with making any gun into what you want it to be as long it's done safely.

I've done a couple.
I'm at work right now so I can't get photos but it's not hard. I traced the G19 grip length onto the G17 I was cutting. I cut it a little longer than I measured using a dremel and then used a coarse nail file to take it down the rest of the way. I checked it with a G19 mag periodically as I went.

That method never crossed my mind (likely why I've never ventured into that territory), great idea! With that said, I think I'll stick to my G19.

My girl has my cut down G17 while I'm in Afghanistan (She shoots the RMR on that better than the irons on her pistol). I'll see if she can take some photos tomorrow.

Rob at Bowers has done this for Travis Haley. Check with bowers about gunsmithing prices.

I guess I wasn't too clear on that... I don't have a 17 or a 19. I want a better carry gun, and I like the 19 better, but the 17s are much easier to find.
I'll take a look at that video tomorrow.
That's a pretty good idea Mick. If you could get her to post those pics, I'd really appreciate it. How close we're you able to get it to a 19's shape/size?
17s easier to find than 19s? It took me a while to find a 17, bought one a few weeks ago. 19s are everywhere when I searched. Everyone is picking up the 17s and the mags before 7/1

OK. My lovely fiance sent these over. Please excuse the background. She knew I was going to post them on a gun board....

That turned out way better than I expected. :)
This comes up on Glocktalk every so often. Some turn out great.

Looks pretty clean. Minus the light, that's exactly what I'm looking for in my carry set up.
Found a slightly used Gen 3 19C at a local shop for a hair over $400. I might have to head back there next weekend and cross my fingers it's still around. They only had one other 19, a new Gen 4, but they had a healthy number of 17s. The guy at the counter said the 19 was their most asked-for gun.
I am a longtime fan of glock 19 but after having shot Mick Boy's cut down 17 I am now a beliver. He did a great job and the thing feels great. Carries the same as a 19, but longer slide. I am sold on the idea.

I'll add a few thoughts.
In no way do I consider this a "Must have" modification (like changing out those shitty Glock sights). It was more of a "I'm at home, bored and drinking a little whiskey" kind of modification. I did the first one out of curiosity. It shot so nice, I did another G17 when I got that milled slide. My girl promptly co-opted it after the first trip to the range. So far I've only done the two and I have no plans to cut any of my other G17s.
I'm not particularly worried about the resale value on Glocks. I don't sell G17s or G19s.
Cutting the grip doesn't affect the function of the gun, just the feel. If you like the feel of a G19 more than a G17 this is an option.
My carry gun is still a G19.
If I needed a 9mm Glock to carry and all I could find was a G17, I might consider cutting the grip to make it easier to conceal. But since I tend to be pretty nonchalant about the "concealed" part of concealed carry when I'm in the US (I just throw a button down over the top of an OWB holster), I wouldn't have a problem carrying a G17 unaltered either.
mick is there a reason you didnt keep that little back notch?

Little back notch?
edit: ^^ Mick, I think he might be referring to the scallop cut on the back side of the mag well, like so:

I've done a few chop jobs. The benefits for me are: a) better concealability for longer barreled Glocks, b) the smaller grip fits my hand better, and c) I can now use 15rd G19 mags in my G17/G34. The last one is important to us now since we can acquire new 15rd mags under the current interpretation of the upcoming Doom, but for the G17/34, we will be stuck with neutered 10rd mags after 1 July unless we already own some 17rd mags. The concealability thing is no joke, since even though I'm a short dude, I can still conceal a chopped G34 as well as a standard G19.
Like Mick-Boy, I don't care about resale value since I'll never sell any of these. They are very solidly my guns, optimized to my needs.
Of course, having chopped G17/34s made my G19 obsolete, so I chopped it to G26 length. Why not just trade it for a G26? Because G26's don't have a rail to mount a light on.

My 22c didn't sell or trade this last weekend so I decided to start customizing it.
I first measured the grip in three spots on a 19 using a mic

Next, I taped off the excess and then cut off the excess with a hacksaw ( I was worried about cutting off too much, so my first cut was not enough and this caused me to spend more time sanding down the frame)
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa436/tlsdiablo/9294DD9D-968C-4766-8AD0-18D6DFAACDC1-312-0000002EE10A259B_zps71cf2c31.jpg
I next used an orbital sander with 80 grit paper.....
I checked it about 20 time while I was sanding and eventually I heard the magazine seat. After that I hit it once more real quick, to give it extra space

Next, I used a scalpel to bevel the mag well and give the mag some extra clearance ( no photo)
but this was what the two pistol looked like before I added the finishing touches
overall, this is simple mod only requires a few tools.
once you commit to hacking up a perfectly good firearm, it's a quick and easy job.
Btw this gun runs a 40-9 lonewolf conversion barrel, hopefully this week I can give a review how this firearm stacks up against my 19& 17

Very nice! You have the same idea as I in regards to customizing your weapon. My G19 will be getting a stipple job hopefully soon.
I was holding on to a "spare" 17 for trades, obviously that isn't going to happen now so will probably cut it down to 19 size just for fun. Thanks for the pics, looks pretty easy.
