View Full Version : Out of State and 1224
So I have an Army buddy living in TX right now, but his job just told him today he's moving to CO at the end of October (promotion). He just bought a new AR this weekend and plans on getting a few new toys next month, to include an AK. He's curious about moving to CO with mags that land outside the limits of 1224 and mag purchase dates (assuming they're dated- see PMAGs). Usually I'd say don't worry about it because who's going to look, but he is worried and doesn't want to violate the law, regardless of how BS it is. So for mags purchased after July 1st in another state and then brought here to CO when he moves... Are his worries unfounded or what? And we discussed him getting mags now so he's safe, but he said he's leaving town for work on Wed and won't be back until July 2nd and can't get anything done this week.

Not sure what you are looking for with this post.
Legality of moving to CO with post 7/1 mags with 1224 taking effect next month.
The way the laws reads, and the way a few attorneys have interpreted it to me...
If they posses the magazine pre July 1, AND are IN Colorado, they are certainly within the confines of the law, bad as it is.
If they are not, then there is some debate. The law is not applicable to out of stare persons, only when they come into the state. A lawyer for a big name firearms manufacturer told me he would interpret the law to be IN possession and IN Colorado prior to July 1 or you would not be in compliance.
There is however a provision for ON or OFF duty use for LE and Military. Question is, if he leaves the employ of an exempted agency, does he then become a criminal? Just one of the MANY reasons that the law should be struck down by any logical review by a court.
dont ask dont tell SO old school there. The gubment wants to know everything about you now, regardless of where it happens and whether it is illegal or not.

He should be careful where his new house is in Colorado.
Thanks for that Mark- I suspected it to be for IN CO only, but again I agree, this law is so jacked up it needs to go. He was also worried because he got to meet a few fellow NCOs in his new NG unit and there are a couple LEOs, I told him not to fret as most of the Sheriff's in CO won't enforce this law.

NOT in Denver... I made sure to tell him to stay the hell out of Denver and Boulder- but he's thinking of starting his search near Morrison/Lakewood/Littleton- He wants to learn how to snowboard.
That would be Jeffco. FWIW, Mink is likely not running for another term and you can bet your bottom dollar the libs are going to pony up someone most of us won't enjoy.

Supposedly Golden Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick is wrangling for that position. This being the guy who advised Hick that most cops are shot with magazines holding > 10 rounds.
Nevermind that most magazines are > 10 rounds now, most are shot with them.

Why not ups them to you prior to 7/1? He ships from him to him, once in CO he takes possession of the mags he sent prior to Law in effect date.
Oh yeah don't ask, Don't tell

Continuous possession part?
What a CF. I got nothing on this garbage law.

He's been in continuous possession. The mags were never transferred, sold or in actual possession of anyone.
Besides who fvkin cares. I'm not going to drop a dime on him, are you. or anyone else??
Ronin tell your friend to ship them to me with his name to & from. I'll write him a receipt for storage. This way his personal belongings were in CO prior to 7/1. The only one with access to his storage area is him, as they will be in a secure area.

The 4th sentence would seem to indicate you haven't completely convinced yourself of your first two sentences. $0.02
What is there to "drop a dime" on if the assertions are true?
I know I'm certainly not convinced by sentence 1 and 2, but to that point and to your question as well - no, I don't care what anyone does in regards to this.

Yep... I live in the same county. And actually Mink is term limited, he's retiring next year.

each sentence should have been entered as a separate entity.
What's that Sgt Schultz saying? I no Nothing
To many folks are stressed out over what IMHO, is nothing more than an ineffective feel good, Lib anti gun agenda law. Like any other "law' unless you're doing something so illegal the mag cap is one more charge. Is anyone going to really enforce it?

When all but IIRC 10 CO Sheriffs say that due to the ambiguity and vague wording of the law they will not enforce it and it will not be a priority, I think we have nothing to really fear. I just sent an email to my buddy saying that he shouldn't have much to worry about, and to just do as we do- Don't ask, don't tell, don't go flashing your "evil 15+ round mags" around and you should be fine. Or, a modified version of a famous Rick James quote: "Fuck yo mag ban."
