If i need to change the gas block/front sight on an AR with 14.5 pinned/weld barrel, how do i do it? The muzzle device is going to get in the way.

Take it to a gunsmith. It has to be removed, new gas block installed and then pinned back on.

So if it's weld on, then I'm fucked.

Take it to Bert at BP Tactical.

Not sure if the muzzle device can be salvaged, maybe time for an upgrade.

I don't have the 14.5 barrel/upper yet, i'm just figuring things out before i spend $.

Why are you buying a 14.5in upper? If you are going for a cosmetically correct M4 clone, I get it. If not, stick with a 16in barrel so you don't have to deal with the pinned muzzle device BS.

I'm a total purist when it come to guns, I want a "cosmetically correct M4 clone" but don't want registration and pay through the notes.

Then I get it. I am guilty of the same with one of my ARs. The only way is to have a competent smith do the work for you and generally the muzzle device getting removed is destroyed in the process.

Will that f up the barrel if the muzzle deviec is weld on?

Generally not if the gunsmith knows what he's doing.

But the muzzle device is almost alway done for?

It's not "welded on" per se. The muzzle device is pinned to the barrel. The PIN is welded to the muzzle device.

Bert did a fantastic job removing the Smith Vortex from my 14.5 Noveske and pinning on an AAC 51T. Destroying the muzzle device, if necessary, assures nothing amiss with the barrel. I think the pin is usually drilled out (oversize), hence the device is no longer usable. I've heard of some guys just twisting them off, but that increases the risk of damage to the barrel.

Just pay Bert to do it right.

They make gas blocks that can open up to slide over a pinned muzzle device.

You may also be able to purchase the 14.5 unassembled and have it shipped directly to Bert (ask Bert), avoiding the hassle of removing the device.

I would also (if new) talk to the supplier about pre-installing the gas block.

Always assume you will have to buy a new muzzle device. The originals tend to get ground up pretty bad or even cut in half during the removal process. One of the resident smiths, like Bert, could give you all the possible scenarios/details.

That answers my concern.

Bert has welded(and dewelded) 5 muzzle breaks on my 14.5

All the old ones have been ok

I get the not wanting to register an NFA gun. But if you plan on doing this more than once to a 14.5" barrel, the $200 stamp tax will probably pay for itself.

Tax stamp to avoid the hassles. Add up the "cost" of smith time, gas blocks, hand guards etc and the stamp pays for itself . Or install a lo pro block and run f/float tubes.

Majority of the time I can "de-pin" a muzzle device and salvage the device, although it may require a larger pin.
There have been some however that the muzzle device does not survive.
Kind of an unknown, we just don't know until get into it.
