Does the bolt cycle faster or slower when fired in water?

Cool to see the gas pattern illustrated like that.

Doesn't surprise me that it the bolt carrier cycles back sooner when under water, good thing he didn't have a case head separation

You mean case head failure

I've had a couple case head separations and they are no big deal. Usually from over worked brass from reloading....

Time for the AR version.

I guessed hydraulics would create higher pressures and thus a faster bolt cycle.

Yeah case head failure would be even worse I had some case head separations on my m76 back a few years ago before I had it tuned it was so over gassed it would just rip the heads off of brass cases lol it sucked had to get out the broken shell extractor

So much violence.

Awesome video!

It definitely makes sense when you stop to think about why it would cycle faster.

On a safety note, did he load it with a full mag or was that just for demonstration of how the action works? It seems like in this case, having a fully loaded mag (or more than 1 round) could be a safety risk. Especially when it was submersed, fired and then it fell off the bench. There is a chance it could have turned around (for whatever reason) and had the muzzle pointing backwards towards that guy. Or am I missing the point of this cool video?

I think it was just one round. I'd like to see other vids, like one with the tub full of Jelly. "I prefer syrup."

That was actually pretty cool. Good to know an AK round only travels 5-6 feet under water, max.

Cool vid. I then watched one on the physics of how cats almost always land on their feet. I think I like this guy, must watch more!

You need to watch the MythBusters episode on bullets and water... You're almost 100% safe from ALL rifle rounds, including 50bmg, at about 6' down... Handgun rounds... Not so much...

They said it has to do with speed... The higher velocity of the rifle rounds causes them to fragment in the first 2-3 feet. The slower handgun rounds don't frag.

I haven't watched either video yet. Are both videos showing the AK being fired while underwater, or are there shots with the AK being fired above the water? I'm just curious if this 5-6 ft distance differs if the firearm is out of the water and the bullet travels through the air before hitting the water (more/less/same distance).

Shot while underwater, and iirc when Mythbusters did similar stuff, the distance was less when shooting out->in (at least, when not shot straight-down).

Cool video. I wonder if relative humidity will affect bolt speed.
