View Full Version : Ruined my favorite pair of Oakleys today
So, I had to learn the hard way that not every rifle can be run like an AR.
Apparently you can't get away with crowding up on the rear sight of a FAL like you can an AR.
Needless to say, my favorite pair of sunglasses just went into the trash with heavy scratches on one of the lenses.
Oh well. Live and learn I guess.
Yea the Fal has a bit more bite to it. I can't own anymore expensive sun glass', the last 3 pairs have been run over (2 by the truck and 1 by my R1). I keep stock in the el cheapo's if you want a pair.
Sent from my Otterbox Defended Tactical iPhone using High Capacity "Clips".
You can buy just the lens directly from Oakley. If the frame is OK you might go that route.
I bought a new lens for my OilRigs for $60. Better than a new pair!
I guess just be glad you were wearing them so your eyes didn't take the hit.

Better the lens than your eyes!
Go the lens route. They should be available.
I always mess sunglasses up. Gave in and ordered some of the ripoffs so I dont feel bad when I screw them up
I'm pretty gentle on sunglasses. I've had this pair for years.
Already tossed them in the trash. I won't spend money putting a lens into a pair of glasses that I didn't pay for. They were a reward from my employer for going out of my way to get a project finished on time.
I'm just going to switch over to another pair (gas cans) that I got for free as well. Hopefully I can get a couple years service out of them too.
If I trash them I will have to switch to a pair that I actually paid for.

I did the same thing the first time I took my Saiga 12 out to the range. Oops.
That blows! Been there done that! Not with a gun but ruined Oakley lenses.

Even if Oakley doesn't make a replacement (the don't sell replacements for all) there are aftermarket companies that do

That sucks, Ray.
Damn it.
Dig them out of the trash and give them to me Ray.

Umm... No.
Sorry. Not digging things out of the trash can for anyone.

Bwahahahaha.......I did the same thing to my favorite clip ons way back when on a FAL too Ray, you aren't the Lone Ranger.
After the first shot or two I just thought I had a little lube splattered back on the lens. The more I shot, the worse it got. I didn't actually feel anything so it must have just barely been hitting the lens during recoil.
On a positive note, it shoots quite nicely and I can hit just about anything I can see out to at least 150 yards or so. I thought the FAL platform was known for poor accuracy?

I didn't mean you. I meant tell your wife to do it.

Great advice! I had my Romeo 1.0 for several years, cracked the lens (which is common with that model), bought a 3rd party replacement and sold them on eBay for twice what I paid. Depending on the model the frame may be worth a decent amount.
Fine. I dug them out. They were in a trash can in the bedroom right on top and there is no icky stuff in the can. Looks like the model is "Minute 2.0"
do I just go to oakley's web site to check lens availability?
Pfft. $90 for replacement lenses?
No thanks.
I checked ebay and it looks like you wouldn't be able to recover your cost after the replacement lenses. Unless you get knock offs maybe.
Yeah. I just set them on the dresser for now. I'll think about wether I love them enough to rebuild them or not. I have two other pairs so I'll just wear another pair until I figure it out.
In the mean time, you have a PM.

Depending on the frames and If you qualify for an account Usstandardissue.com may have lenses for very cheap. From the sounds of it you want to put much effort into it tho lol.

I have always said there are shooters and non shooters. Now that you know it is a shooter do not do ANYTHING to the Barrel, upper receiver, bolt or carrier.
My camo gun, irons. 3-5 shot Monty's are easy but 10-20's are harder. And I hate to say it but when I read the title and who it was by I knew exactly what had happened.[Flower] Never try a scope with a short relief on one as well, just saying. [LOL]30887
I hate it when oakley retires glasses. I miss the big square wires. My head is as big as a giant watermelon and most glasses look kinda stupid on a bald guy with a huge head. Find em on ebay every once and a while, but they're going up in price regularly.
Probably need to find some new ones anyway. They don't wrap around all the way, and I really notice it in the summer when I'm in the jeep and it's crazy windy.

Try having a nose with a wide bridge.....good luck finding sunglasses that don't ride too high.
I have the same, big melon, problem. Check out the Smith PIV LOCKS I have in the trading post now. They're big melon friendly, and you can get all kinds of different lenses for them if you don't care for what they come with.

nevermind I guess, I should of read your full thread
I once tried to get replacement lenses for my Oakley's and found out they retired it. The CS person on the phone gave me 50% any new pair of sunglasses I wanted direct from their wharehouse. Great CS!
If it makes you feel any better, I ruined my favorite trading post today. That's kinda like glasses.

I sent you a PM, Ray. I got your back.
Sent from my teepee using smoke signals.
Decided it was worth throwing a new pair of lenses in my favorite sunglasses.
JM hooked me up and they are good as new again.
Maybe I'll wear a different pair next time I drag that FAL out to the range.
At least until I improve my technique.

Or, I can just grab a pair off my company truck and when I jack them up I can just grab another pair off the truck.
