So evil Ray1970 has got me thinking about getting into specialized calibers for long distance Pdog hunting. Seems like the .22-250 could be the ticket. Like the rest of my rifles, I will reloading for it. Any thoughts?

As for you Ray...

Here is kind of my formula...

.22 Mag to about 100 yards, then I go to .223 to about 300, then .22-250 to about 500 and then a .243 (or other 6mm).

I have an old Remington 788 in 22-250 that I use for PDgos and Coyotes. Its one of my favorite rifles, even though its ugly as hell. It is extremely accurate and it. The Remington barrel is a 1-14 twist though, so I have to stick with lighter bullets. I've had the best luck with 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenades.

243. You can get the same velocities as. 22-250 with a bigger/heavier projectile. You can also hunt big game with it.

22-250 works. 40gr NBT with 41.0gr of H380 makes p-dogs vaporize. Be warned though, 22-250 burns barrels, 1000-1500 rounds pushing light super-fast bullets and it's toast.

Yep, one reason I have gone to 50 grain NBTs and shoot more from the $250 Encore barrels than the $500 Rem 700 barrels.

Hmmm. Looks like the .243 is in between the .223 and .308, my other Remington 700 calibers. That and Dick's sells a .243 Remington 700 in the same Mossy Oak Brush Varmint model. And Chunky, I want something left to photograph after I hit one, not just blood splatter on the ground!

Lol, you are going to have a whole family of mossy oak Rem 700's (nothing wrong with that btw).

220 Swift was my caliber for varmint hunting and very fun caliber to reload for. 4000+ fps for factory 40gr loads are available and folks that have hit over 4700 fps with their custom reloads. High quality barrel, slow rate of fire and good maintenance are key to long barrel life. Even with these factors, typical barrel life is inside of 2000 rounds. Impressive results shooting Barnes 36 gr varmint grenades at 4200 fps.

.243 is a very nice round, but so is .260! Just a barrel change for either.

But honestly you just want more new toys, not a better p-dog round [Poke]

Maybe you will get into LR after all...

Are you sure? Is it 23 or 25 cal minimum?

That would fit in quite nicely with the rest of my ammo.

Its hard to beat a 22-250, unless your using a 22-250 Ackley improved. The A.I. goes step for step with the swift and brass last a long time. I have one that Kevin Weaver built and its awesome out to 500, if the wind isn't blowing to hard. You said you wanted a long range round and since prairie dogs tend to live where the wind blows I say go bigger. The .243 or a 6.5 creedmoor are my personal favorites for that task. I have been using my Dpms 6.5 creed to shoot dogs out to 700 yards. Yes a 140gr. Bullet is a little big for dogs but when the wind picks up it drifts less.

I run 22lr for stalking inside of a 100yds. 223 or 6x45 out to 250-300 yds. Then the death ray from 250-500yds. 22-250 52gr amax behind 36gr varget on a Federal GM Match primer. ragged hole groups at a bill opens up to an inch at 300yds. Minute of VarmintKong at 500yds.
Now there's a lot of talk on 6mm and I won't argue it. I just have a hard time seeing the red mist on my 6's because they're 2 far out...My preferred rifle is my 300WM, 208gr amax at ranges of 25yds....you might get lucky to find a vertebrae. I have 2 250's, 1 243, 1 223 and 2 6x45's. Guess which ones do the most of the work...the 250's.

No matter what you get, you must get an accurate shooting gun and know your ballistics. Great glass is a must. Most of my optics run more than the gun.

I just recently switched to a .204 Ruger for coyotes and would imagine that this caliber would work equally as well if not better on pdogs.

Someone correct me if i am wrong but you can not use a .243/6mm or above during big game season on small game.

newracer
07-02-2013, 13:05
You are correct, unless you have an unfilled big game license.

It is illegal to hunt game birds, small-game mammals or furbearers with a centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber in regular rifle deer and elk seasons west of I-25, unless you have an unfilled deer or elk license for the season you are hunting. A small-game license is required.

You don't need a small game for prairie dogs do you? They're classified as varmints or rodents.

Not if you're on your own private property, or acting as an agent of the owner, performing pest control.

JC Targets is a good cause too. They teach at risk kids to weld, build these and run a business.

So, "Michael" my Pdog Popper survived his first trip to the range today. He was attacked without mercy by .223 @ .308 FMJ's from about 180 yards, and lived to tell the tale!
