View Full Version : So is the KSG legal or not?

Did some searching here ... didn't find an actual solid answer, but under the new stupid mag ban is the KelTec KSG banned?

I don't think it should be because it has 2 magazines that each fall under the legal limit (not one big magazine). I contend that it's 2 mags and not 1 because you have to manually flip a switch between the two mags (so that would mean the UTS might fall under the ban). So if it's banned so should magazine clamps (which I don't believe are).

Is there someone in the state government that we can get to write the equivalent of an ATF letter clarifying the legality/illegality of the KSG? Which petty useless bureaucrat is in charge of such things, would it be the AG's office?

Very interesting question. I like your interpretation and think you're on to something.
However, in general I'd suggest NOT writing ATF or other government offices for a clarification letter unless your 99% sure you are correct. There's a good chance you are legal now, if they issue a letter clarifying it, might slam the door on you.

My take is:

You already have it and everything now illegal has been grandfathered in.

But the KSG has two magazine tubes which each hold seven rounds. Seven three inch shotgun shells is 21 inches but when multiplied by two brings your total up to 42 inches. Depending on how the law is interpreted you could be good or not so good.

I think Brian has the right idea of NOT writing anyone for clarification, because this one is a toss up.

Just my 2 cents

That's my problem, I don't already have one but I want one ... so I imagine that I won't be able to buy one because no dealer will carry it and I can't buy it from an individual without going through a dealer.

Go to wyo and order one through their LGS, if one here will not sell it to you.

That is what I am going to do.

There have already been several discussions one this...end story. It's perfectly legal. No magazine or tube (however you want to call it) is over 28". You have to manually switch tubes. Good to go.

^^^ Pretty much my take on it. And if it turns out to be banned, take Jim's advice and go to Wyoming, Kansas, AZ...

Well here's a guy listed as a Dealer in Westminster with a UTS-15 for sale ... so that makes me feel pretty good about my prospects whenever I get enough coin saved up for a KSG.

I have to believe no dealer in another state is going to risk their FFL for one sale of a potentially banned firearm. As soon as you produce a Colorado ID for the 4473, they will undoubtedly send you packing, without the firearm.

Keltec lists the capacity as 6+6+1, I'm sure that's enough for an overzealous liberal DA to go after you due the word 'similar.'

I'd like to know the answer to this also... mostly because I want one, but couldn't afford to get one before July 1.

I doubt they'd rule in favor of it... it's short, it's black, it's "scary"... clearly it's only meant for bad things...

I understand from a friend who has toured all the front range dealers this week that Douglas County arms and two others had the UTS in stock. That shotgun in my understanding rotates between tubes unlike the ksg which us done manually. If this shotgun is for sale I dont see why the KSG is not. On another note dealers are scared and confused right now. 5280 for example removed 100 semi auto rifles from there gunbroker auctions. Another dealer is raising its fist towards the laws but is complying but us selling the rifles without the mags but telling customers to go to their satellite store in nearby state to pick up a free mag. Either way I willnit buy a Colorado complaint firearm ss long as the law is in place or until I move.

We pulled the mag from our SRM-1216 and pulled our UTS completely. Nobody knows if it's OK to sell these or not. If they say they do, then they are smoking crack. Selling them places one in a position of "test case". That's a big fricken risk.

Better to be safe than sorry, I'd sure hate to be store that gets made "an example" of, all for a couple thousand dollars or whatever these high demand shotguns are going for.

There are interpretations of the magazine law that make the KSG and UTS violations, so I can't see anyone competent telling anyone unequivocably that they can sell it.

Whose interpretations?

Whose interpretations?
Nothing official. Just reading the definitions of illegal shotgun magazines in the legislation. Specifically CRS 18-2-301(2)(a)(II)
