I am very new to hunting and would like to get a small game license. Do I need to take a hunters safety to get this license? If so will a ccw work? Also is Turkey considered small game or a separate license?

Yes you will need to do hunters education class.

In some areas you can get over the counter turkey tags, sometimes you have to draw. Just check the specific area and check out the regs on the Colorado DOW website.

Turkey is a separate tag and yes you will need to take hunter's ed.

Do I have to present the hunter's safety card or is that on file electronically?

Sometimes they will copy your hunter safety number off of "last years" license, but more times than not, I've had to show my safety cert. card when renewing any of my hunting licenses.

You are required to carry your hunter safety card with you in the field. With one exception -

If you have a hunter safety card, go to the Regional Office on Broadway and show it to them with a copy of your CID number. They'll register the Hunter Safety card number in the system so that you will have it printed on all hunting licenses in the future and not have to carry it in the field with you as would otherwise be required.

Don't ask why the Hunter Safety office in CPW can't do it when the Hunter Safety class roster is processed. The explanation never makes any sense.

I did not know this. I have the CID # on the license already, is this the same as the Hunters safety card #.

Your hunters safety # is on the license too. I have never had to show my card just an old license. I do not even remember the last time i saw my card or where it even is.

ETA: They can issue you a new one with your CID# alone.

You Dont even need a old license oral cid. A drivers license will get you a license at Walmart. My wife just did this on Saturday

You need to get the CORRECT Information from a reliable source: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/Pages/Hunting.aspx

HUNTE R EDUCATION (Safety) requirements
Hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, must have completed an
approved hunter education course sanctioned by a state or province
before purchasing a license. Colorado honors hunter education
courses from other states and provinces. You must present an
original hunter safety card when buying a license (unless previously
verified) or enter the required information when applying by mail
or online. You must carry your hunter education card while hunting
unless a “V” is printed on the license, which indicates hunter education
has been verified at a Wildlife Service Center.
Hunter education courses can be found at www.wildlife.state.co.us/ (http://www.wildlife.state.co.us/)
Hunting/HunterEducation/CourseCalendar/Pages/HEC alendar.aspx.

Only if you've gone to the CPW and had the card entered into the system as I mentioned.

eneranch - that's what I wrote earlier in the thread.

Well, having sold licenses for a few years, here are the real rules. Many don't follow them, but be prepared for the guy behind the counter to follow them. You can get a license with your drivers license IF you are verified in the license system. If you are not, then you must present your hunter's safety card (not an old license) or they cannot sell you a license. To get verified, you have to follow the previously posted instructions. Getting your card verified also relinquishes you from having to have the card on you while hunting in CO. Yes, you are supposed to have it on you when hunting too.

If this is your first license, you better have your social security number also. It's required for everyone over 12 years old. Once entered into the system, it doesn't need it again, but you MUST give your SSN the first time. It's federal and state law.

thats racist. does it have to be MY social security number? or will one of the ones Im using for "refund" purposes work?

your friend from south of the border

Ironically, it's dead-beat dad law that makes this a requirement. Don't pay child support and no license for you.

I know many a dead beat douche bag that pay their child support just so they can hunt... Very good law, if you ask me...

Wow, that must be new. They must have finally relaxed the in-person requirement. I think they has some form you could mail last couple of years, but no phone call provision. Never made sense to me anyway. Either they can find your number and name in their records or they can't. Glad to hear they are doing this.

you really should get some new friends.

Not my friends. My friends are the ones collecting said child support. All my friends are ex military, cops, or people from this board.

On second thought, you're right. I need new friends.

I was also surprised. I called the main office to inquire how to mine and my sons verified. While on the phone the lady looked up my information and verified it. She said for my sons I would have to go to an office to get it done though since they had just received their cards. Maybe it is becasue I have been buying licenses for over 20 years.

More likely that the hunter education instructor's roll sheet from your sons' classes hasn't been entered into the database yet.

Maybe but one son's card is over a year old. They just bought their first small game licenses so maybe that will trigger something.

Since parks and wildlife are combined I just got mine verified and bought a turkey tag at Mueller state park. They looked at me like a deer in the headlights at first and then realized that they can now do it. They were happy to do it.
