POWELL, Wyo. (AP) - The Park County rancher seriously injured in a grizzly bear attack says the sow was simply trying to protect her cubs and could have killed him if she wanted.
The Powell Tribune reported Friday that 64-year-old Nic Patrick was released from University of Colorado Hospital this week but faces up to five more surgeries. In his first interview since the attack, Patrick said the 400-pound bear came at him twice and said she could have killed him either time.
Patrick was irrigating early on June 20 when the bear went after his dog, then attacked him.
He believes global warming drove the bear out of her normal habitat. He said he hopes she returns to the high country and finds plenty of food and "gets fat and sassy."

Had I been the rancher the story would have ended much differently. I allways carry, so the bear would probably have been killed end of story. But, if I had been mauled, I sure as hell wouldnt have blamed the attack on global warming. WTF?

Keep in mind Park County is most of Yellowstone, so it probably some California yuppie turned rancher.

I don't know if I'd have said exactly what he said but I don't think that it was stupid.

He's saying that the bear was acting like a bear. What would be stupid is thinking that bears don't act like bears. Consider the audience for the article, which probably mostly thinks bears act like Walt Disney scripted them.

Totally agree with HBARS last statement. Hope he's ok, but he probably sold his home in CA for $$$$$ and decided "I'm gonna buy a ranch". I don't think he'll be armed for his protection, though.

I think the better story is: Why would a Denver hospital release a bear?

He WAS armed. He just didn't have a round chambered.

Yeah but did he have a class 5, 6 time high school world champion wrestling background with a degree in arm bars and a wrestling stance no female bear could not want to pounce on? Not to mention not a single ounce of fear of any teenage or younger grizzly.

I'll have to check the article again, but I don't believe he had any of that; which was his first mistake.
