242 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

128lbs in 12 months!

A year ago, I could barely walk to the mailbox without being out of breath, today I'm biking to the gym, working out and biking home. (yes, even on leg day). I have not been this small since probably 1997 or so.

I really had no idea what to do, I just continued to add weight and add weight, year after year. And then, I read an article (on a political site no less) that talked about how the guy was 299lbs and he was not going to go over and he lost 50lbs in 6 months eating bunless burgers, bacon and eggs and meat for dinner. 10lbs a month for a fat guy without doing much work would be great. The article (which I can't find again) referenced /r/keto and I explored. Read the FAQ, read links, ordered the books and thought "oh, what the heck"

I lost 30lbs in the first month.

Clearly, my body cannot deal with carbs (or grains, I feel so much better since not eating grains, even on a cheat) and without them, I feel full, I feel better, I feel human again. My blood pressure is in the normal range, the meds are long gone (in fact all meds are gone). Except for the lack of hair, I feel like I'm in my 20's again. My energy is back (who needs to eat? fasting is easy) and i've gone from a 4x shirt to a 1x. and from a 48 fat jeans (that barely barely barely fit) to the 40's in the picture that are too big and I can actually pull down without unbuttoning.

What you are really waiting for, the pictures.

http://imgur.com/a/LS5wK

I don't have any pictures at my heaviest. (nobody wants to take pictures when they are fat), but those 2 pictures are pretty indicative. Both are probably 350ish or so.

i didn't have surgery, for the first 6 months I didn't work out at all and only started because i wanted to (and actually the scale loss slowed down). It's called the keto diet and it's basically meat, cheese, and green leafy vegetables. I have bacon and eggs almost every day for breakfast, some type of meat with a veggie or a salad with desert. high fat, medium protein, ultra low carbs. Easiest thing I've ever done.

ETA: OP, good job. Weight is a bastard to get down once you go up.

I am happy to say I weigh 5 lbs more then I did when I was active duty. 200 lbs.

Of course I went from a 32 in to a 38 in waist. The weight is the same, the location has drastically changed. No more 54 in chest for me...

Seems like losing weight has been trending pretty heavily on the forum this week! Congratulations on your achievement so far. I want to warn you about something, as a friend if I may. My father did exactly this, back in 2003-2004. He followed the "Atkins diet", which aimed to enter ketosis by consuming 20 net carbs or less, daily. His diet consisted of high fat, high cholesterol foods like those you mentioned above. What he didn't realize, and what I want you to be conscious of, is that his cholesterol levels went way up and he ended up having a heart attack at 52 years old. He lived, had a stint put in, and is doing fine nearly 10 years later, but the risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart attack went hand in hand with that diet. I just want to pass along a personal story as a friendly warning, is all. Congratulations again.

Yup, Atkins style diets work wonders. Once you get rolling and get past the initial "food boredom" it gives amazing results. I need to get started up again myself!

Congrats!

As for cholesterol levels, etc: Anecdotes != data. I can go and do Atkins, and my A1C, cholesterol levels, etc are in perfect levels. Most medical data backs this up that has been published. But not everyone gets the same results from any diet, so the real takeaway is, get blood work done every 6 months or so, just to be safe.

My congratulations to you!!! I used to be in the "well over 350 lbs" club. I'm about 100lbs lighter now, many years later, and still trying to get another 40lbs off. I'm using similar techniques (except for the working out part, not doing that much right now). I first cut out ALL high fructose corn syrup, then other 'artificial' ingredients, now am getting rid of carbs. During these past years I did a lot of exercise (Tae Kwon Do with the kids, and I've always been a huge bicycle rider [no pun intended]) and that helped a LOT! I have rheumatoid arthritis and cutting down on the grains has helped immensely!

Congrats again!! Nothing breeds more success like success...

actually keto, which is somewhat similar. more strict on carbs, but how you get them is up to you (which isn't ok on paleo). A lot of people move to paleo once they get to maintenance.

That is exactly right. It definitely affects people differently, and my dad's issue could have been entirely due to genetics. His doc just told him to stop the diet, thus my reason for sharing.

Cannibalism?

Grats on the weight loss. I need to look into something since I'm about 30 lbs heavier than my active duty weight and I went from a 51 inch chest and 36 inch waist to a 49 inch chest and 39 inch waist. Plus I have the family curse of diabetes now too.

In college when I was in total stud mode (you know, nothing to do but train, lift, run, bike, occasionally go to class) I was at 189 lbs
So, i'm trying to get down to 200. I figure 11 lbs for 20 years is ok, right?????? And 200lbs on 6'1" of solid is pretty good.

Well, good luck to you! And congrats again! I think I'd "like" to get to 175, but that may not be realistic, I'm only 5'10" but I'm pretty large-framed, always have been. Really wide shoulder to shoulder. So I may be better at 2 bills as well. As long as someday I can fit behind the steering wheel of my Willys, I'll be happy.

You guys and these weight loss threads, keep 'em up! You're getting me riled up to do something. I think my biggest problem is not drinking enough water, never been a big water drinker. Need to change that.

one of my biggest NSV (non scale victories) was when I had to scoot my seat FORWARD in my truck. That was pretty exciting.

Everyone wants to do something, nobody wants to be big, you just need to find something that works for you. There are lots of options from weight watchers to low carb (what worked for me) to paleo/primal. Because for me a couple big moments were taking a defensive pistol class and realizing that i could barely get out of a kneeling position. How useful is that going to be? And the other is, is that there is no more money. There isn't going to be any money for all this medical care (that's way overpriced), so the more you can remove from causing yourself (all the common problems of being way overweight, high blood pressure, diabetes, foot problems, etc) the better chance you'll have.

Congratulations man! I just started a diet myself and the progress has been great. I'm doing a juice fast and have lost nearly 17lbs in a week and a day. I started over 290lbs and am now nearing the 260's (that feels so weird to type...had to think about it for a minute lol) for the first time in as long as I can remember. I started another thread asking if anyone had done a juice diet last week and we've been discussing the topic there if you wanted to read through that one too. I think it's great that so many members here are doing something about it and I wasn't even sure anyone else was doing it but now it seems like everyone is! Kind of like when you get a new car and you start seeing them everywhere, right? We all need to stick together and keep motivating each other to keep with it.
