Something interesting I found if you are looking to hide a gun in a common area of your home (i don't have children, so I think this is kinda cool):

That last one is pretty cool, though I would think you'd want to never put a coat on that center hook otherwise it would make getting inside more difficult.

I have a hat or two that I'd hang on that center hook. Prevents it from being used and its not so heavy that it can't be opened.

BTW Monky, I was at the Renaissance festival a few weekends ago when I saw this shirt for sale and immediately thought of you:

Love the idea of the coat rack. Install out of reach of kids and voila!

I understand your point; however ...

My son, when only 2 or 3, figured out how to pull the cabinet drawers out to form a sort of ladder to get on the counter.
Once on the counter, he was able to get on top of the fridge ... where the cookies were .

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Expensive cabinet indeed! My Mom's last dresser had a hidden compartment in it, huge slide out drawer on the top and very difficult to see and discover unless anyone tells you about it. It is not thick enough for a pistol though, mostly used for jewelry but still very cool indeed!

HOLY EXPENSIVE FILING CABINET BATMAN!!!

No doubt, you can get a similar wood file cabinet for less than $100 (example (http://www.officemax.com/office-furniture/file-cabinets-accessories/wood-file-cabinets/product-prod4020476)) pick up a set of drawer glides for $10 or so, remove the kick plate and make it into a drawer using maybe another $10 worth of materials.

They need more pictures of what exactly they're selling. While I can kind of understand what it is, without more pictures to see their products at different angles, its a little hard to see what each item is.

Yeah, I would agree. I did find some YouTube videos showing the products, especially how the magnetic lock works. I will take some pics and get them up when mine arrives.

I already have two of the bulgy maks for the coat rack. My favorite "pillow" gun. The only thing I did notice is that once you build it one needs to be careful about using it too much as marks on the paint will give it away.

Their prices are sky rocketing. I was looking at one of their hidden mirror and it was $350 or $375 and it's gone up quite a bit since then. I was interested at the previous price but not so much now.

Those are cool but the downfall would be needing the key in a bad situation? What's the best setup for using a switch mounted remotely?

Why not just use magnetic cabinet door closures and not even lock it?

http://www.easternmarine.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/2/6/2665_st.jpg

Or you could use the kind that "pop out" like a stereo cabinet.

http://images.orgill.com/200x200/6466239.jpg

I'm thinking that for under stairs the ideal setup would be to put drawers under the stairs that are held closed with the pop-out style magnetic catches.

Well then we're not getting away from keys of some sort (and don't think a hidden switch is enough to keep the kiddies out).

oh crap there is a bad guy in the house, now where did i put that magnet.

absolutely useless.

your baseball bat would be more useful in that situation.

a hidden biometric switch would work though

the bookshelf from qline is way too complicated to be useful

davsel

Simply leave any magnet (key) sitting on the shelf. You could leave any number of magnets on any number of shelves. You would still have to know where to place the magnet to open the hidden lock. To the average scum-bag, it is just a magnet sitting on a shelf.
I would consider hidden magnetic locks over simple magnetic closers simply because I do not want the hidden compartment opening inadvertently - when moving a piece of furniture, or bumping into a spring loaded magnetic door.

If you want to go with a biometric lock you can probably use build something using an Arduino (http://arduino.cc/) and a fingerprint sensor (like this one (http://www.adafruit.com/products/751)) But then you're getting outside the skill set of the average do-it-yourself-er. Also you're making the system dependent on your home's power and/or batteries.

Here's a writeup on making your own Arduino based biometric lock. (http://atmelcorporation.wordpress.com/2013/10/01/biometric-security-with-the-arduino-uno/)

Of course if you don't want to over-complicate things I guess a Simplex Drawer/Cabinet push button lock would work.

Here's one place (http://www.americanbuildersoutlet.com/KABA-Simplex-9600-Series-Mechanical-Push-Button-Cabinet-and-Drawer-Lock.html)you can get them ... here's another (http://www.gokeyless.com/product/513/82/simplex-c9602-push-button-cabinet-lock).

Height only works for so long with kids. We put the lollipops on the top of the refrigerator to deter my toddler from illicit snacking. He found a way to adapt and overcome.
http://johnnyego.com/photography/vincent/page7/vinthief.jpg

I've been building hidden compartments into furniture for years now, though I mostly use them to hide my porn as opposed to my guns.

Mag Locks, various sizes of these available anymore, reasonably cheap.
http://www.amazon.com/Seco-Larm-E-941SA-80Q-Pound-Mini-Maglock/dp/B000G7ZE1M/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1390540096&sr=8-4&keywords=mag+lock

Magnetic Reed Switches, with magnet. 10 Pack on ebay for a few bucks. (normally closed type)
http://www.amazon.com/SWITCH-WHITE-MAGNETIC-SPST-NO-ADHESIVE/dp/B007Z7PZD8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1390540122&sr=8-10&keywords=magnetic+reed+switch

12 Volt power supply, (wall wart usually works fine, mag lock doesn't pull much for amps)

Wire the reed switch in line with mag lock, hide in drywall or furniture.

Hide the magnet inside an object like a book or whatever to open the reed switch.

Can also run the system on battery with a charger on the battery. Power goes out, the mag lock stays locked for a long time.

I am not seeing the need for the lock complexity. If the hidden compartment is sufficiently hidden to be undetected, no lock is necessary. If it is detected, a wooden piece of furniture is not that hard to kick apart.

It is clever. However, the paint choice just sucks.
