The CRC .22LR Steel Dogs Match will take place every second Sunday of the month (weather permitting) at 9:00am at the Colorado Rifle Range (http://www.crci.org/) located near Byers, CO.

We will be engaging ten steel prairie dog targets measuring approximately 6” high by 2.5” wide and three larger plates at distance ranging from 35 yards to 200 yards in five separate strings of fire. On all five strings the shooters will begin the course of fire in the prone position with their rifle loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds and the rifle's action closed.

We will have two separate divisions: Scoped Rifle (no magnification limit*) and Open Sights (post & notch or peep sights).
*If you are looking at your target through a piece of glass (i.e. 1X Scope or Red Dot), you are shooting in the Scoped Rifle division.

The cost of this match is only $10 per rifle. You may shoot up to a total of two rifles but one must be scoped and the other an open sights rifle.

______________________________________________
String No. 1: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in ascending order with one round each. The targets will be set at: 35yd (35pt), 50yd (50pts), 65yd (65pts), 80yd (80pts), 90yd (90pts), 100yd (100pts), 110yd (110pts), 120yd (120pts), 135yd (135pts) and 150yd (150pts). You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. If you hit your intended target, you will get their assigned point value; if you miss it or if you hit a target out of order, you just don't gain any points (no penalty for misses).

String No. 2: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in descending order with one round each. Starting with the 150yd target and ending on the 35yd target. You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets.

String No. 3: On signal, you must hit all 10 targets in ascending order. If you hit your intended target with your first shot, you get its full point value. If you don't hit it on your first shot but you hit it on the second shot, you receive 50% of the points. If you don't hit it on the second shot and you hit it on the third shot, you receive 25% of its value. If you don't hit your intended target on your third shot (or if you skip it), you will not receive that target's points value and you must continue shooting the next farthest target. You can bring to the line as many magazines as you deem necessary but each magazine can only be loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds each. You will have a maximum of three minutes for this string of fire.

String No. 4: On signal, you will have one minute to rack up as many points as you can. You can engage the targets in any order you like but you can only engage each target once. If you hit it on your first shot, you get the target's full point value. If you miss it, you must engage a different target. Whether you hit or miss, you cannot engage the same target a second time.

String No. 5: With a maximum of ten rounds loaded in your magazine, you will engage one target at 165 yards (165pts), another at 185 yards (185pts) and one at 200 yards (200pts). You can engage these targets in any order you want and, if you miss, you may continue shooting at them until you have either hit them or your ten rounds have been shot. Once you have hit a target, you will get its point value but you cannot engage the same target again. There is no time limit. The maximum amount of points you can earn on this string is 550 points.

<IMPORTANT> This match is intended only for .22LR rifles (semi-auto or bolt action). <IMPORTANT>

PLEASE NOTE THAT .22 Mag, .17HMR, .17HM2, or any other rim fire or center fire cartridge WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

After a long hiatus and with the help of Mark P. and other shooters, we will once again renew the .22LR Steel Dogs Match in a new venue.

This coming Sunday, July 14, 2013 we will meet at the 200 yards berm on the East Ranges at the Colorado Rifle Club. This is a test match and, if everything goes well, we plan to continue hosting this match on this location every second Sunday of the month (weather permitting).

Since we will need to figure out the placement of the targets, we might not begin shooting the match until after 9:30am. Nonetheless, I will ask you to please show up early so we can all help with the setup.

We don't have any shooting benches at this location; we will all be shooting prone (or standing or kneeling if you prefer). If you have a portable shooting bench that you would like to bring, please feel free to do so but only if you are willing to allow other shooters to shoot off your bench too. Shade is also limited; if you have a portable canopy, please bring it with you. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and copious amounts of sunscreen.

See you all on Sunday!

Today's match was a blast (though I will admit that shooting a .22LR projectile at 200yds in sustained 12MPH winds was no easy task).

Sounds like a light wind day out there.

Everyone who's shot at CRC in the past tells me that the wind at this range is ever-present. I guess that, if I can learn to call the wind here, shooting anywhere else has got to seem easy.

Honestly, it always seems like the mornings are fairly calm but it usually picks up in the afternoon.

I know if I have some serious sighting in or accuracy work I try to get there early.

cysoto

This was the case today too. We got there around 7:30am and there was only a faint breeze but by 10:30am the wind picked up and it never stopped. I stayed after the match and left around 2:00pm; it seemed like the wind calmed down a bit but it never really stopped. On a positive note, the breeze made the temperature feel cooler (and that was nice).

I have kept an eye on the weather and it looks like, even though there is a slight chance of afternoon showers for the next few days, we are going to be able to shoot this month's .22LR Steel Dogs Match at CRC.

When we shot this event last month, there was a big mud puddle at the entrance to the 200yd berm on the East Range but the berm itself was dry. I mention this because you may want to wear shoes which you don't mind getting a little bit muddy (just in case things are not completely dry by Sunday morning).

Sight-in starts 8:00am and the match starts at 9:00am on Sunday, August 11, 2013 (and every 2nd Sunday of the month).

cysoto
08-11-2013, 19:32
Today's range conditions where better than I expected. The berm was perfectly dry with a light breeze and the Sun shinning bright.

I have just emailed out the match results. See you all next month! -Cy

Waiting on two things before I send out the "aye" or "nay" email: 1) see how much snow we get tomorrow and, 2) talk to Tom about running this month's match since I cannot do so this month. I am sorry to say that, with as much rain as we got today, it's not looking like we are going to be able to hold a match on Sunday. I am really bummed because Sunday's weather is going to be PERFECT but, being that bay 13 is the lowest spot on the East Range, there is no doubt in my mind that the berm won't dry out on time for the match. Once again, Mother Nature has played a trick on us so we'll have to cancel. Let's hope that next month's weather is better 'cause I am developing a horrible case of cabin fever.

cysoto
05-05-2014, 21:08
As you all know, because of weather issues, we haven't had a chance to hold a .22LR Steel Dogs match for several months. As luck would have it, there is a slight chance of rain in the forecast for this Sunday, May 11 when this event is scheduled. However, it is more important to mention that this day is also Mother's Day.

With this is mind, I would like to see a show of hands to find out if you would like to shoot the .22LR Steel Dogs match this coming Sunday, May 11 (as long as the weather allows) or if you already have plans to spend your day with mom.

All CRC calendared matches are open to the public. You just have to pay the entry fee. Some require pre-entry, but most do not, like this one.

That and you sign a safety waiver.

I'm seeing it listed on CRC's website as being on the 16th, is this correct?
I do not see it listed on the calendar, Second Sunday of April is the spring work bond days so the range is closed.

It's typically held on the 2nd Sunday of the month. In April, this would put the match on Sunday the 10th however, that weekend the club's BOD has a "Spring Cleanup" planned and therefore all ranges will be closed. Sadly, this means that we will not be holding a match in April.

To complicate matters, the May match was moved one week forward to May 15 (since the second Sunday is Mother's Day).

I should also mention that "Steel Challenge" and "Steel Dogs" are two very different matches. Steel Dogs is an accuracy-based rimfire rifle event while Steel Challenge is more of a speed shoot that can be shot either with rimfire guns or center fire handguns.

Steel Challenge is the one being held on May 16.

That's what threw me. Ok well that's a bit of a bummer. I am going to get a membership out there soon anyways. Any other open to the public rimfire matches out there that I'm missing?

All matches at CRC are open to the general public. Some may have prerequisites (generally in the form of taking a safety class to make sure you understand what is expected of all the participants; such is the case of USPSA).

There are multiple rimfire events that are shot at CRC. Smallbore Silhouette, bench rest matches and even Appleseed (which is not a match but instead, more like a marksmanship class).

The 2016 shooting season is just starting. I hope you can come shoot some of these events with us (and don't forget to bring your friends and family).

As Jlorenzo very well mentioned, the match for the month of May is scheduled for May 15. It had to be moved from its regular scheduled date because otherwise it would have fallen on Mother's Day.

Hope to see you all the on May 15. Set up is at 7:30am, the match starts at 9am.

Ok I am now a member out there. Just want to double/triple check, we will have about an hour to confirm zero correct?

A little bit less than one hour. We try to knock out the setup in 30 minutes but it sometimes take tad longer.

and the zeroing is done on the 100y range next to the 200?

Only if you want to. We set up the course of fire and shoot it to verify that our zero has not shifted. Some times a participant may choose to set up a paper target at 50 or 100 yds to make sure the rifle is grouping correctly but, for the most part, shooters set their zero prior to the day of the match.

Cysoto runs a nice friendly match. Get there early to help set up and you'll have plenty of time get your rifle zeroed and some dope for the targets. I find that the wind and temps have changed enough from morning to afternoon that getting to-the-.1mil dope level for the last long (200 yards) isn't as important. Plus, people are more than willing to help with spotting.

The bad news is my 11yr old son has improved significantly from when he placed 4th the last time we came out... Looking forward to this coming weekend.

nice. I am expecting to be humbled but who knows... I just settled on some Eley edge which Eley in general has been hard to come by lately so I just wanna make sure I have a solid zero.

Tomorrow's .22LR Steel Dogs match at CRC is on. Setup will take place at 7:30am, after which we will sight in the rifles and the match itself will begin at 9am. There is a chance of rain for Byers but that is not until after 3:00pm (we plan on being done with our match much earlier than this).

Yes indeed. I just sent out the match call email.

Shooters,

This coming Sunday's .22LR Steel Dogs Match is a 'GO'.

As always, setup starts at 7:30am, sight-in is from 8:00am to 8:50am and the match itself starts at 9:00am.

It's going to be a hot day and, even though we have that cool new cover over the shooting area, you may still want to make certain that you bring along plenty of water, sunblock and, just in case, insect repellent.

I hope to see you there,
Cy

Sorry Gang but Mother Nature has spoken and she does not wants us to have a Steel Dogs match this coming Saturday.

I'm sure the weather for the June match is going to be much better than this weekend's. See you all then!

I just sent out the cancellation notice via email but, just in case you didn't receive it I just wanted to let you all know that there will not be a .22LR Steel Dogs match this month. A couple of inches of rain & snow are expected at the range on Saturday morning. We'll try again next month!
