I will be spending Mon-Thur down in the Springs for the next month or two. Are there any must see gun shops in the area (good selection or just nice guys)?

I may have some time in the evenings to check out the local attractions if there are any recommendations.

Thanks,
Brian

I enjoy going to Shootin' Den. One of the employees (Laura) and I were friends back when I was stationed in IL. The owner died on Dec 18th and his estate is in probate so the continued status of the store is up in the air. Aside from the guns, they have lots of reloading stuff (and other things - even an archery counter) that the other stores mentioned always seem to be out of.

Take the Fillmore exit off of I-25, go East (that's AWAY from the mountains for those who are geographically limited) about 2 blocks. It's in a corner strip mall on the left (North) side of Fillmore.

As far as the post for Specialty Sports: Usually a very good selection of firearms and accessories, but their prices are hit-or-miss and sometimes the employees can get downright nasty. They usually have pallets of bulk ammo at decent (not great) prices though, so... It's definitely a place to drop into during your visit. I know the address was listed, but to simplify finding the place, they are located at the intersection of Murray & Fountain Blvd about 3 blocks East of Academy Blvd. To access their parking lot, you need to turn South onto Murray as there isn't a turn off directly from Fountain

Wow, Specialty Sports has a website???

Oh, never mind, looks like there website needs a LOT of work. Good shell of a site so far though.

I agree with theGinsue's assessment of Specialty.

Ginsue's on the money about Specialty-I've stopped in a few times when in the Springs and prices too high and employee's know it all's until their info questioned then downright rude. Just my .02

Of course, Sportsman's Warehouse has a website too, but all you'll find there is their weekly sale flyer. The word is that the new owners are supposed to turn it into a shoppable site. We'll see!

the one thing I can say about Specialty is the used prices are great. cheaper than what most people sell there guns for in the classifieds. I go in there at least once a week to check out the used case.

Try to call first but if your into surplus, or just good chat look up Wildfire Mercantile. Rick is a great guy, and will get you anything you are looking for. It is a small shop East of the Springs on his residence. Dragon arms is the same Idea, but I will never buy from him again. Good to go see for fun, has class III stuff and a Military vehicle museum and paint ball park.

Specialty Sports is a must see, but like the others said - don't waste your time buying there. Most of the employees do "know everything" and are extremely rude. The last time I tried to buy something there, a scope which I had been looking at online for some time, I was rudely informed "they don't make that" - when it was clearly visible under the glass on the first row right in front of both of us. After pointing out the scope I was informed by the employee that my rifle, a PTR91, wasn't accurate enough for a scope anyways so it didn't matter. Isn't worth dealing with that nonsense when the scope was a full $200 more than elsewhere. But, they have a massive selection which makes it worth the drive to look around.

Dragon Arms isn't worth the drive unless you are really bored. This guys customer service makes the people at Specialty Sports look awesome by comparison. His "store" is way the hell out in the middle of nowhere, and the times I have been in there he seems pissed that you are even looking at his stuff. Won't let you look at a rifle unless you have already purchased it, etc.

Sportsmans Warehouse is mostly stocked with non-black rifles, but their prices are good and there is a ton of other stuff to look at.

Plenty of stuff worth seeing, though most of it is better to see in the day - Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls if you have kids with you, maybe drive up Pikes Peak if you have a day that it isn't cloudy. There is a shooting range/place to shoot up behind Garden of the Gods.

Brian,
If you have time, you should DEFINITELY check out Dragon Arms (http://www.dragonmans.com/)! (click on the Gun Store link in the lower right :P)

If you're there on the right day, you might even get a chance to do the Museum Tour (I can tell you the their collection is amazing, to say the very least!).

Actually, Cal is more of the "on-site" manager, but the official manager (and possibly the new owner after the probate issues) is a woman that Mr. Guitar had a relationship with for many years. Her daughter is Laura who works @ Shootin' Den (don't let her fool you, she knows a LOT about firearms and can shoot better than more servicemembers I know (okay, to be fair, I was in the Air Force, not the Army or Marines!).

i'll second that the used prices are great.

They are more expensive, but I'm willing to pay more to be able to check stuff out before I buy.

I only shop elsewhere if SS&S doesn't have it.
