Been looking to get into archery and bowhunting. Anybody here bowhunt? Any advice for a first time buyer regarding the type/spec or brand of bow to get?

Buy a compound bow, go to a local shop and try as many as you can before you buy. Bow hunting and shooting is quit addictive and the cost can increase depending on what you buy.

Go to Sportsman Wearhouse and shoot some over there.

There was a decent bow on another site I'm on ill see if that's still for sale but you need to go to a bow shop and see what your draw length is. Then shoot a bunch of different bows and see what you like then shop around online and you will find it cheaper on line... That's what I would do.. Used bows are cheaper and just as good... Good luck

Here is a thread.

I got into target shooting last year. Yes, I'm still a newb. [Tooth] With all the fire/shooting bans, last year, this was an easy way to shoot something. Plus I can set up in my back meadow.

Hit up some of the local archery shops and rent some different bows. Tanglewood is one of my favs. Roger is good people.

As for buying, I'd go used to start. ArcheryTalk (http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/) has a good used/new sale section and about any topic you'd ever want on bows & arrows.

Go to Bill Pellagrinos archery hut here in the Springs. He will hook you up. For compounds I prefer a dual cam bow over a single cam bow. The dual cams are a little smoother during the let off.

PSE or Bowtech. They both have been good to me over the years. I have heard good things about Mathews also

How do you want to bow hunt? I hunt with a Horn 60 lb. long bow. I have used compound bows but a recurve or long bow is what I like the best.

Wanted a compound bow to start deer hunting, seen a ton more and been a lot closer to shootable deer than elk over the last few years. I did go to Archery Hut and the guy there was amazingly helpful, of course the more he told me the more questions I had and research I did which led to more questions.
Will go to SW this afternoon and talk to them. They carry PSE, Bear and a few others so I should have a selection to shoot.

If this will be your first compound bow, or first in a long time, I encourage you to go to an archery shop, and talk to them. A good shop will set up bows to let you try out, find what fits you best, and get you going. That's what I did, and ended up with a Hoyt. There are a few brands like them that you won't find at big box stores, hence I recommend an archery shop. It can be addictive as said, even target shooting. Trick is, to find one that can have a draw length for you, and not too strong that you can't practice and build up. With my arms, not many make bows with 32-33" draws, so it made my quest more difficult than some others. If the rig is set up for you correctly, you'll get more enjoyment out of it, than something thrown together.

I've been thinking about getting started in archery as well and one piece of advice I'm considering strongly is to get a lighter pull bow to start. Helps to build muscles and get used to shooting before jumping into a 60# hunting bow. Kind of like starting a new shooter with a 22LR instead of a 30-06.

I usually go to Bear Creek Archery. They can be kinda slow sometimes though in helping... But they have a decent selection, and they can help get you all set up.

I shoot Bowtech and I love mine. The 70# is a bit gnarly for target shooting on it though, and I want to pick up something with a little less weight or better weight adjustability for practicing.

Archery shop all the way. They can fit you to a bow (draw length, draw weight, arrow length, etc).

A lot of bows have an adjustable DW of about 10lbs. Gotta look at sights and arrow rests too.

One thing I'd look for is an adjustable draw length that does not involve different size cams. My BT Patriot is like this and needs to be taken to a shop and shorten the DL about 1/2". The closest shop is an hour away.

My teen shoots the Mathews mission craze. It is an adult bow but in addition to changing draw length you can also change draw weight. I got it so he could grow into it. It would be good for a new shooter. It was about 330 at Pelligronos.
