Any former New Yorkers? I'm going on a trip to NYC, and I'd like to know what are some fun places.

depends on what you like and do not like. any place but washington heights, harlem, Da Bronx , just bounce around and have fun. each section of madhatten has it's own quirks and bad spots.

What to stay away from? Aside of Democrat election offices.
Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Ground Zero Monument, Times Square, Broadway plays, Yankees or Shea stadiums, East Village, Madison Square Garden, Wall Street, Coney Island, SOHO.... You could literally spend a couple weeks there and not do all of the tourist stuff NYC has to offer.

The "Circle Line" is a sightseeing cruise that sails around the island of Manhattan. They explain a ton of history throughout the tour. We did it a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
If you like pizza (and if you formerly didn't), find a Two Boots pizza place - their slices amount to a meal. http://www.twoboots.com

I agree 100%. I went to the top of the Chrysler building, that was fun. You can take rides through the good parts of the park. The people were super nice a few years back when I went... The women were gorgeous, all the time, I don't honestly remember seeing an ugly woman. The street performers were cool, go inside the big M&M's store, that's a lot of fun also. The night life there is absolutely unreal.... I went for an extended weekend by myself, didn't sleep, and still couldn't get everything in...

There's a famous wax museum there too. "Madam something or other's" wax museum. The wax statues are REMARKABLY lifelike. I've been there twice.

Not from NYC, but my grandma was so we used to visit often. My biggest suggestion: For lunch sometime, go to East 86th and Lexington (iirc one of the subways exits near there, I want to say either the 6 or 8, but don't quote me on that). There's a place called Papaya King. Get one (or more) of their hotdogs and a papaya drink. Mmmmmmm, so tasty.

Yes. The mountains of Colorado are awesome.[Ban3]
Get a loaded hotdog from a street vendor. Your insides will hate you but your taste buds will thank you.

Haha, same here, that's exactly what I was thinking.
I've been here less than a year and would be happy to help... send me a PM if you'd like.
How long will you be going for? Long Island is a beautiful place to be on the east end. Lots of beaches, lighthouses, vineyards, farms, etc. You can take a train from Manhattan to Montauk (the end) but that's a full day trip.
As for NYC, all of the advice posted is pretty spot on. Do you have anything you want to do in particular? You could head down south to check out Little Italy, Chinatown, Canal St., Financial District, hop across the bridge and go to Brooklyn (stay out of Bedford Stuyvesant).
All of the museums are definitely worth checking out - MOMA, Natural History, etc.
Whatever you do, stay out of New Jersey [facepalm][pileoshit]

No
If you want pizza spots I can name like a hundred places but must must stop by and try
Luzzos coal oven
Patsy's
Totonnos in Coney island not Manhattan
NYC is five different large cities all right next to each other. Most people are talking about Manhattan when they are talking about NYC.
Don't drive. Get a transit pass or take cabs. Most New Yorkers walk a lot, so you might as well get into the spirit and walk.
You can find food and culture from every part of the world in some part of NYC. Some of the best Italian food I've ever eaten was in the Bronx. You want Russian food, go to Coney Island and you will find neighborhoods where only Russian is spoken by people fresh off the airplane.
Where are you staying and what kinds of things would you like to do?

I'm from there, went to NYU and worked there for years. I don't do the tourist-ey shit but I can tell you where to party, where to eat, where to go for escargot and cheeseburgers at 4AM with a pornstar in tow, etc. PM me if interested Urbanwolf.
Go to a Yankees game. Just wear something Yankees or you might now make it out!

I lived in Manhattan during the 80s. Things have certainly changed since then. Here are my suggestions..
Ground Zero,
Ellis Island,
Mannys and Sam Ash and 42nd st Music, if you area musician.
Visit the UN building cut down that barrel on that knotted up revolver,
Broadway,
Central Park
And for some fun...Drive through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel with your windows down during traffic hour.
Enjoy. One word of advice, do not spend all of your time looking up. This is a dead giveaway for all the con men and thieves.
edit... oh one last thing. Sometimes finding a place to piss can be a challenge.

I mentioned this, he thinks i'm joking. Especially with your camera (remember those) or phone taking pictures.
My best advice is this.
If the hooker can't break a $20, Walk Away.
I have family (my fathers entire family lives on Long Island) enjoy it, it is an overwhelming experience, I have not been back since 9/11 and I don't plan to for another few years, as others have said you really need to get creative about where you carry your personals, wallet and money etc. the sheer mass of people in Manhattan can be overwhelming for someone who has not experienced it. I have never had a bad experience in New York never been stolen from pick pocketed or mugged and I have never had a problem with claustrophobia until I went to Time Square with what must have been every other New York city Resident (it felt like that) HOLY CRAP.
I've been to LA many many times, it really feels like Denver, with bad traffic and ten times the size but the same amount of people per mile, New York is totally different, ten times the size AND ten times the people per mile, keep in mind that everyone is polite in their own way, everyone in New York yells its not rude its how you communicate, and driving is best left to those experienced in the area who most likely do not speak very good English and may not speak Spanish, or Russian or...
Everyone in New York that drives uses their horn, constantly it seems
Everyone in New York walks A LOT
The Food in New York is probably the single greatest experience in life
Everything in New York is BIG, if you go down to the river at the bottom of the Royal Gorge and look up you marvel at mother natures power, in times square you do the same thing, and then you realize men built that, to me that was powerful, the observation deck on the Empire State Building, unfortunately you can no longer go up on the observation deck on the World Trade Centers, the man made marvels are incredible, the Brooklyn Bridge(and others) the Holland Tunnel(and others) Yankee Stadium, Nassau Coliseum(Islanders!!) the History of Madison Square Garden.
I never went on the Subway as the last time I was there it was pretty crime riddled but I hear its been taken care of and remodeled, the city never sleeps, they mean that its always busy. I promised I would take my wife someday, she has never been, hopefully in the next couple years.
If you're going to the Empire State Building, go at night (the city looks more impressive when it's dark).

i know it's very touristy, but i did one of those hop-on, hop-off bus tours in conjunction with the circle line tour. it came with a night tour that went over to brooklyn--it was really, really neat to see. on the day tours, you just get on and get off where you want--it's like your own private bus line. the cost really isn't that much and often includes museum tickets.
don't forget the met. you could spend a couple of days there alone.
