I miss it. Where you at? Make sure you get out for both salmon and halibut. If you go down to Homer, take an overnight, that way you get 2 days limit.

Are you in Anchorage?
Flew into anchorage then down here to homer. Got some reds today, halibut, cod, a ton of pink salmon.
Couple pics before I go to bed while it is still light out.

Yeah just a joke since I never go to sleep unless it is dark, but being as that it never really gets dark here...

Great pics. Brings back memories. So jealous. You just up there visiting or did you leave the "lower 48" behind?
Just up for a few days putting fish in the freezer. Not sure I would live up here due to the winters and lighting weirdness, but I would definitely love to come up for all summer, or have a house up here.

Man...so jealous! Have fun!
Nice work! What a fun way to fill the freezer.
Lucky guy! Looks like you're catching some fish. Want to hear the full report with pics when you get back. Throw back some cold ones with the Homeroids while you're there.
Next year I'm taking Mrs. Hummer to Alaska for two weeks. Maybe a few days up the Inside Passage, then a drive from Denali to Homer. Also want to fly in to a lodge off the Prince William Sound to band hummingbirds and do some salmon fishing. Can't really do the IP and the interior in 2 wks but she'll have to decide what's important. She hasn't been to AK but I've made two trips there. Once did 2 wks. hiking and canoeing around Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, and 3 1/2 months on the Beemer up the Alaska Highway and all around the state.
Every man should go to Alaska at least once in his life.
Slayed the reds last night! Was catching some very nice fish on the kenai. Some were easy 15 lbs.

I think if I did that my wife would rip my nuts off and serve them as rocky mountain oysters!

Couldn't have put it better myself. Pondering a retirement cabin up there. How you doing the IP?

Not sure, still in the initial stage of thinking about it. Two weeks is pretty limited time to travel the inside passage and see much of the interior. It may be an either/or decision and two separate trips.
In '79 I took the Alaska ferry up to Haines w/the motorcycle, stopping at several ports to camp, fish and explore, then rode north. The ferry was easy, cheap and flexible, and sees all the sights that most of the cruise ships do. Would rather spend money on destination lodging, fishing and wildlife viewing, and maybe a flyover and boat trip around the fjords. Also, the ferry goes on to Prince William Sound and Homer. Seemed like a good way to travel back then. I may have to start a thread to ask how others put together a 2 wk trip.

Spent two summers in Kenai living with a good friend who guided with his dad. Best time of my life. Fished every day I had off. You will really enjoy the sockeye it eats well. Pink is marginal I would smoke those but fresh from ocean may be better than river caught. The really go to sh1t once they hit fresh water but are real biters.
Agreed with above statement. Everyone needs to go there once. Sniper may agree there is a different vibe in AK.

Definitely a different vibe. Less bullshit if you ask me and people know what matters. The respect for both the environment and the weather is different. Landscape doesn't begin to describe the beauty. +1 for every man should visit at least once. First time I stepped off the jet up there, I knew in the first 2 minutes that I could live there. +1 for Reds. Sockeye is easily my favorite.
85 lbs of fish in 2 days of fishing, could have had a lot more but my buddy said the pinks weren't worth keeping compared the the reds so we kept throwing them back.
Nice! I used to go up there every couple of years. I have fished Whittier, Seward, Anchor Point, Valdez, and more. I still have some Salmon fillets in the freezer from the last trip.
Like you, I could never live there year round. But I agree, having a small cabin up there for the Summer time would be AWESOME.
Good luck fishing!

He is correct about the pinks. They are trash fish compared to the reds. Silvers should be there as well but may not start until Aug 1.

Some people smoke the Pinks, aka humpys.. but they suck compared to Reds, Kings, Silvers. You guys take any halibut?

Yeah I got a couple but they were small...like 10 lbs .
His boat us older, single engine and he isn't comfortable going far out. They said 40-50 miles out was the place to go get em.

Yeah, you need to get into the deeper water away from shore.

I took my dad 2 years ago and we chartered a boat. nothing under 30 lbs. one guy caught a 90, my dad caught a 200lb halibut. Mine were 30 and 40 lbs. I felt like a little wuss!

That size eats better.
I agree. We always chartered so we could get out there deep enough. Largest Halibut I caught was just over 160. I have seen a 220 and was rather jealous, lol. I wish I had some Halibut left in the freezer!
